Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job

Donald asks…

Where can I find a summer job in Montreal?

Hi! I’m 14 years old and I want to find a summer job im montreal. I speak french and english. I WANT to earn about 1300$ but I NEED about 500$. So, where can I fing a summer job in Montreal? Or, what can I do to earn the money?
Thanks :)

Mikey answers:

Try the parks department. They have a variety of jobs for summer.

Michael asks…

What questions will they ask me for this summer employment program interview?

I applied for this program that helps youths find summer jobs. I’m getting an interview tomorrow and i have no idea what questions will be asked.

This is my first interview and i’m desperate to be accepted into this program so i want to do my best for the interview!
(This is a group interview).

I’m guessing there’s going to be “Why do you want to be a part of this program?”

What else might they ask?

Mikey answers:

What do you hope to get out of it?

What do you consider to be your strengths?

What do you consider to be your weaknesses?

Do you have your own transport? How will you get there?

How do you think the summer employment program will enhance your resume and career?

And….

With the aid of diagrams please show me what you hope to do over the summer

James asks…

Where can I find a summer job in Ireland?

I’ll be working under a BUNAC permit.
And yes, I’m fully aware that it is now September. Just thinking ahead.

Mikey answers:

There is 450.000 people out of work at the moment and your looking for a job i think the answer is you wont find one

Susan asks…

I’m having a difficult time finding a job this summer, Any suggestions to me?

Mikey answers:

Well heres a suggestion…If you live near a university or college, call them and ask if they have summer camps like Upward Bound Program or Gifted, Talented students and see if they would hire for a mentor in the summer. If they do hire you, you get free room and board on campus, free meals, all the time in the world to do nothing, and you even get a nice check at the end of 6 weeks. Just a suggestion though.

George asks…

What if I can’t find a summer job?

I’m a first-year university student studying mathematics. The studying itself isn’t too stressful, but instead I’m absolutely terrified of the prospect of finding a job during the summer months.

Ultimately, I’ve never had a paid job before. However, I’m doing my best to improve my employability in the meantime – alongside studies I volunteer at a local charity shop for 11-12 hours a week (experience + a good reference), and I’ve recently passed my driving test, which is helpful because it means there are more jobs I can apply for. My plan is to print off a ridiculous amount of CVs, then during the Easter break (basically all of April) hand them out anywhere and everywhere.

However, even with good grades and volunteer work, that might not be enough to obtain a job during the summer, given how tough the market can be, and the idea of not having a summer job is almost too horrible for me to contemplate.

So what do I do if I fail in finding a job? Of course, I could always volunteer at another charity shop during those months (unlike employers, they always seem to want extra help), but I’d ideally want to be earning some money alongside the experience.

Mikey answers:

‘…You can give private tutoring to people that need Math help or you
can try getting in work study in your school.’

Good advice but if the asker wants to get paid, this would class as self-employment and he would need to refer to places or websites like hmrc and businesslink in regards to that for more information.

Recent graduate Cindy Longwani says ‘…Many graduates are suffering as a result and doing jobs that school leavers would do on summer breaks…I started looking for graduate scheme jobs…I would get response and even invited to interviews but would not be successful…determining that God will remember my sacrifice…Today I work as an internal auditor in John Lewis head office Corporate Credit Audit department ‘ =

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job College

Donald asks…

Finding a job in Washington, DC?

I am moving to DC for the summer. How hard is it to find a part-time job? I am a college student and not looking for anything too serious. I have restaurant and retail experience. Any tips?

Mikey answers:

There are a lot of different jobs in DC. A lot of jobs are in retail, and it depends on if you want to work inside or outside. You could easily get a job as a vendor, selling snacks, drinks, and souvenirs to tourists. Or there are jobs at places like Pentagon City Mall and Crystal City and Union Station. There are plenty of jobs up there in retail.

Mandy asks…

Summer camp job/volunteer for a 17 year old?

I’ve been look for summer camps that I could volunteer at or get a job for as a 17 year old. Most CIT positions stop after 16 and pick back up to be a counselor at 18 with college experience.

I live in North Georgia and I can’t find a good camp around that has positions available for my age.

Mikey answers:

Call your state Girl Scouts office — there are Girl Scouts day camps going on all over the USA, and they do accept 17 year olds as volunteers.

Helen asks…

Summer Ideas?!? please help?

Hi, I am a recent high school graduate and will be attending Emory University this fall. I know this is really late, but I need some help finding summer jobs/internships/opportunities. I am already volunteering at a hospital but that is only 4 hours a week. Does anyone know of any opportunities in the Atlanta area that are still open? All the stuff i have found so far is aimed towards college graduates…. please help

Mikey answers:

What do you really love to do? Find a way to do that thing. If you’re at a hospital, volunteer at a rehab center or retirement home. Intern at a child care center, read to kids at the library. I don’t know what you’re really into, or I could make more suggestions. Meditate and ask for help with your search. The answer usually will come to you.

Carol asks…

Is it bad to put your information into a job search engine?

I have heard that sometimes if you put your information into a job search engine that it can backfire on you because if your information stays in the system too long, they won’t consider you if you are searching for jobs later on (right now I am in college and am looking for a summer job, but later I might use the same search engine to find a job after college, and my inactive profile could backfire on me)

I have tried applying to many places in the area, and none of them have called back.
but you did not answer the question, BEST ANSWER, 10 POINTS!!

Mikey answers:

It doesn’t matter because the general job search engines are absolutely terrible at finding jobs. Probably less than 10% of successful job searches result from Monster or Careerbuilder.

Much better is to apply directly on the company’s job site. Better still is to be networking on LinkedIn, watching the people in your field and asking questions/learning.

Blanket blasting to “many places in the area” doesn’t work any more, as you discovered. Modern job searching involves targeting your approach–learning about the companies you want to work for and how you can help them. This builds your resume for the serious job after college.
.

Daniel asks…

Where can I find a job?

I am live in Lancaster, Pa and I am 18 years old. I really need a summer job to earn money for college. Where can I find one? PLEASE HELP.

Mikey answers:

Well if you weren’t lazy, then you could find a job anywhere.

Now apply your filters of scrutiny, and you can’t find a job!

You could find a job at a grocery store, pharmacy, retail store, etc.

Being 18, without education, and in PA will not get you a good job that pays well.

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job

Lisa asks…

Trapped over the summer… Trouble finding a job… Parents driving me insane…. Help?

I’m nineteen years old, and I’m unfortunately one of those university students who are stuck living with their parents over the summer and living in residence in the fall… My university is in a city two hours from my hometown. I’m going to be starting my second year of my Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education… My parents have always been supportive of my choice in career. Music’s the one thing that has kept the drive to keep me going in life and one of the few things I can actually do “right”.

The problem with studying away from home, is that the things that change over there affect you as soon as you go back. My dad had lost his job a few years back, had a temporary one before getting laid off, and then got another a few days after I started classes. But then, when I came home for Christmas break, I had discovered he hadn’t been going into work because he was “getting sick”. When I came home a month before that, I had discovered that they couldn’t afford the house that we had lived in for 17 years anymore, and that they’d have to move into an apartment some time later on. I was upset that my mother did not tell me this through all of the emails she had sent me…

So, of course, when I returned to my hometown in late April, I had to get used to the change of a small house with an upstairs and privacy, to a small apartment with no upstairs and little to no privacy. My father had still not been working, so income was difficult to scrounge up for my mother, who was the only one working… My plans were to start looking for a job immediately, but my grandfather’s eventual death had put those plans on standby… So job hunting started later in the month of May, and no matter how hard I’d look, no job opportunities were opening up, save for one interview, which I didn’t pass…

However, I wasn’t completely hopeless… My band director from high school called me up, asking if I could work for him, doing band inventory and other odd jobs for him in the office. I worked from June 9th, 2011 to June 30th, 2011. My paycheck for all the hours I’ve worked should be coming soon, and it should be at least $1600, which makes me very happy.

Unfortunately now, I’m back where I started. And I just don’t know where to look anymore… I’ve tried looking at places all around neighbourhood, and many of the job websites for my city, but there’s nothing that interests me or fits any of the skills I have.

I’m also having issues with my parents, and their attitudes towards me lately.

For example, just this evening, I went to complete my second hour of practicing my clarinet in the bathroom. (There’s no space in my bedroom) I had finally received some summer repertoire, and the piece is very technical, so of course I have to work on the difficult sections over and over. When I finally finish, my mother asks if I’m done, to which I reply, which causes her to sigh in relief. Offended, I ask what the problem with my playing was all of a sudden. To which she replies with a snooty tone: “Do you really have to play the same song over and over?” Now, I’m pretty sure it’s common sense that you can’t get a piece properly prepared if you don’t go over it several times. I’d go to a practice room over at a university, but the closest one is quite far away, and I’m nervous about leaving sheet music on the bus by mistake.

My dad is mostly sitting on his ass doing nothing. I don’t see why he shouldn’t get a job. Mom needs to stop feeding his alcohol habits.

They have a need to buy beer and clamato on Fridays and get hammered. I understand they want to have fun, and mom wants to relax after a long week at work, but I don’t enjoy listening to loud music and constant drunken lectures by my father every Friday. And the fact that they HAVE to watch a movie late at night with the sound BLARING is just pissing me off! It sickens me that they think just because they’re the parents they can do whatever they please…

Does anybody have any ideas about what I should do about this clusterfuck? Or do I just have to suck it up and get over it?

Mikey answers:

Wow, this sounds like a rough patch in the road for ya. In the job aspect just make as many relationships with people as you can. Being connected in any society helps significantly especially when job hunting. Also be as friendly as possible to random people that you bump into, who knows you might hit off a conversation with them and bang! They happen to be a manager at a local music shop and hire you b/c they liked your socially open character. I know it sounds a little unrealistic, but many of my friends have had this happen to them as well as myself. Especially now-a-days, when jobs are hard to come by, it seems you have to know someone to get anything. Or have you ever thought of doing volunteer work (playing music) at retirement homes during there social hour? That can lead to potential jobs, plus it can be another asset to put on your resume’.

“You will never find time for anything. If you want the time, you must make it.”
Charles Buxton

Best of luck to your music career. You sound like you got a stable head upon your shoulders. Just make sure you put it to good use! When your stuck in a rut, maybe sometime try not to think how am “I” going to get out of this, instead think of it as a chance to stay there and help other people avoid getting caught in that rut. I think a big problem with society is that we happen to think to much of ourselves, how to benefit ourselves. Every-once-in-awhile take the time to do an act of complete selflessness, even if it is as small as holding a door open for someone.

David asks…

Where can I look to find a summer job?

I’m 15 and I would like a summer job to get some of that good ol’ green, but I don’t know where to start looking at all. Any help would be appreciated.
Please give ACTUAL answers instead of trying to get money from referrals to the scam websites thanks

Mikey answers:

Make babysitting flyers using the computer and put them in the library, people’s mailboxes, and grocery stores.

Drum up more business and keep a notebook to schedule when you do get a customer.

Culver’s minimum hiring age is 14 with a workers permit.

I called many stores because I am 14 looking for a job. This was the response they gave which makes me happy after looking for so long.

Find a local one go online and apply and go in store to apply or call and ask if they are hiring.

What I did was Google a bunch of business near my home and found their numbers using Google maps or their sites and I called and directly asked if they are hiring and what age do they hire at.

Mary asks…

I want to find a summer job in the Philadelphia suburbs conserving the environment. Where can I work?

i ve looked at the websites that come up with google searches and none have really helped.

Mikey answers:

Try Parks and Recreation….. The next best thing for the environment is to clean it up.

Sandy asks…

Where can a fourteen year old find a summer job?

liek stopshop? and does Borders accept summer job teens?

Mikey answers:

It’s gonna be hard to find a decent paying job at 14. But try working at a library or bookstore. I dont think thier age range is too high

Mikey answers:

it wont be easy to find something though

Lisa asks…

How can I find the right summer job?

I am a college student, and am in desperate need of a job this summer.
There’s a huge problem that I have run into though. Although I do excellent with math, I do horribly (with math) under any kind of pressure. So cash register: not an option for me. Even if I only have to count simple change, my mind blanks out (even if the numbers are in front of me). I can’t add 2 to 17. I worked with money and simple numbers (concession stand) all last summer (through a temporary work system which has jobs that usually always involve working with money) and it was a disaster. Eventually I came to work exceptionally early so I could get the window that few people came to.
I was going to apply to work at a summer camp, but I’ve been informed that there are already too many female camp counselors.
Am I doomed?

Mikey answers:

Try checking out your local Boys and Girls Club or other venues that have summer programs for kids and need people just like you to work with these kids.

Laura asks…

How can a full-time college student find a part time job?

I’m 19 turning 20 next month. I have virtually no job experience, just a summer job that was under the counter. I’m kind of lazy and never really needed a job until now, I really regret not getting one when I was younger. I don’t have money to pay rent, bills, etc. I am totally f***ed if i can’t find work soon. I live in the Portland metro area where jobs are so scarce. Even the McDonalds nearby isn’t hiring. I keep applying everywhere but nobody will give me a job, not even an interview. I try to call back after applying to show that I’m interested but nobody will give me a chance. I don’t know what to do.

Mikey answers:

Definitely try applying to every single place on campus that you can. Even if they say “must have experience,” it’s worth a try. Those jobs are only open to students, and if you put in on your application (on the short-answer section or wherever it fits) something that shows them you are willing to work hard, they will at least give you a chance.
TIPS:
-Always tell the truth
-Let them know you have good work ethic and will readily commit to all tasks assigned to you, and that you are determined to do a good job (if these things are true about you)
-DEFINITELY research their department or company, business ethics, what they do, etc., so they see how well prepared you are in your application, over the phone, and in the personal interview.
-Tell them why you are so willing and excited to work for them — don’t sound desperate by saying “I need this job for the money” but let them know how hard you have been looking for a job, and how you would work harder at this job because you will be so grateful to have an income.
- SPELL CHECK your application and anything else employers might see of you.
-Wear good interview clothes.
-Delete or untag crazy party pics and statuses on fb that use curse words or talk about getting s***-faced.

-Once you have the job, FOLLOW THROUGH ON YOUR PROMISES. Do not complain about ANY tasks they assign you, not out loud and not on your facebook page as they can look that up if they choose. Seriously. Complainers are sooo annoying, especially in these times when an employer is practically doing you a favor by hiring at all.

John asks…

18 yr old in community college and has no job?

My boyfriend has a 18 yr old daughter, she is currently attending a 2yr community college. She is planning to transfer to a 4 year college later on. Right now she’s undecided about her major, and does not know what she wants to do in the future. No goals planned. She is not a A++ student She is kinda lazy, doesn’t study and do her papers till the last minute. But she will do them on her own, w/out you worrying about it. Most of the time you will see her just sitting on the coach watching tv or on her laptop.

Do you think it’s ok if she doesn’t find a job while she is attending school? What about during her summer and winter breaks? Right now she does not have a high motivation to look for p/t jobs. She did try looking for jobs last summer, but did not get hired. But i know she only applied for American Eagle, Hollister and nothing else. I ask her to apply for jobs in the college, and she did not want to.

Currently her dad is still giving her allowance, paying for her cell phone bills. She is living under her dad’s roof.

So do you think it’s ok that she does not try to look for a p/t job while she attending college? Or should he try cut down on some of her expense that way she will have more motivation to look for a p/t job?

Mikey answers:

If you cut her cash she will be less motivated what if they cut your cash will you be less motivated or more? Why don’t you talk to her ask her or invite her to go to the show with you, see your get board she does to. You find things to do she only has four walls to look at. And work is not easy to come by unless you get a degree in college. Find ways for her to study. You can help her in that way no by cutting her money off or slowing her money down that will only add to her being board. I’m going threw this now.

Jenny asks…

summer jobs hard to find?

My 20 yr old is home from college & having a hard time finding a job. No one wants to hire “just for the summer“. We’re in Lorain County, Ohio- what is your experience?

Mikey answers:

McDonalds, WalMart, Sam’s Club, Barnes and Noble, and Cedar Point are all companies that come to mind that have specific programs in place to hire people for “just the summer.”

You’re not going to find a career position “just for the summer.” It’s probably going to have to be what I call “grunt work.”

I threw bags for United Airlines while I was in school and drove a bus at Disney World.

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job In New York

George asks…

Living in Los Angeles…?

Hi…I’m an Italian girl (so please forgive my grammar mistakes!!) and my bf & I are planning to move to Los Angeles and work there next summer…I know it’s really too soon to plan anything, but i wanted to ask (if u live there/know much about it) if finding a job (any…also as a waitress) and an house (even a simple studio flat) is easy and if it’s the expensive city i expect it to be (lol) ….Actually i’d rather prefer New York,but bf says he wants the sunshine and such stuff and new york would just be too messy for him,do you agree that Los Angeles should be prefered to New York?Would there be easier finding what we need?
Thanks for your answers….
XoXo
P.S. if u have any site you think that might help us,please post them as well with ur answers!…thx a lot
Mmmmh…well….I guess i should opt to super-grey-London,then …which is going to be really gd for my accent (but bf won’t like it AT ALL) …lol… i thought i just needed the “visa permission”, not a special one to work :S
U.S. is definately no more the dream-land!

Mikey answers:

Hi,

Los Angeles IS very sunny. In the summer, it can be very hot. This summer was rather mild.

I prefer LA to NY because of the humidity. It just isn’t as humid here. Also, LA is more spread out, rather than having so many people living literally on top of each other.

Finding a job isn’t too difficult. There are many low-paying jobs in the service industry, particularly in the summer. You can even work at Disneyland, where your “foreign” language experience will be helpful. However, surviving on such a job is next to impossible. You will only make $8 per hour, and a decent studio flat (apartment) costs around $1000 per month, give or take.

Good luck

Mark asks…

A ghost story I am starting, please comment! ~Candlelight.~?

I used to believe in ghosts, when I was little, but then I grew out of the idea, because I was tired of wishing for something more, so I gave up on all things magical. But then I died, and I found out that I was wrong for wishing this upon me, if it was the wish or not, I am a ghost, and it’s not a good thing. It was December 3rd, 1993. I was thirteen. You would think I would be happy for finding what I have been searching for my whole life. But being a ghost isn’t easy. It’s worse than living, it’s worse than dying, it’s not at all I imagined it to be, but I guess nothing is. But before I begin, let me tell you a little bit about ghosts, because I wouldn’t want you to read this, thinking I look like a white floating blob with to black holes for eyes .

Ghosts:

1. They’re real

2. Some are bad

3. Each ghost has to stay in the place where they have an unfinished job, because they will end up at the same place regardless. Some ghosts stay a long time because they’re unfinished job is difficult and suffering.

4. Ghosts do not show up in photos

5. They have appearances, which they can see.

6. There are different types of ghosts depending on their season, mine is winter.

7. We have feelings, and we hold grudges.

8. We can levitate one foot, and walk through anything we choose.

9. I am one of the ghosts with a difficult and suffering unfinished job

10. This is a true story

Chapter 1: How it happened.

Everything has a reason, well I think. So here is the reason I am still half alive right now. The reason I’m a ghost. The reason I’m suffering.

~~~
“Ariella, it’s time to get up!” My step mom yells at me from downstairs. I cringe, and then stretch my arms into the air. I sit up, my eyes drooping. I look into my pearl-framed mirror. I run my fingers to my jet-black hair, and squint my chocolate brown eyes. I died my dark brown hair black a month ago. I pull on my favorite pair of black jeans, red and black striped shirt, and pull over a gray hoodie on top. I pull my hair in a ponytail, and run down stairs.
“Your quick today.” Examines my step mom, Malory.
I stare expressionless. “I guess.” I never liked my step mom.
“I’m going to school now,” I called as I left the house.
I didn’t bother saying goodbye to my dad, I have been mad at him ever since he married Malory.
I walked in the school biting my lip, it’s a habit I have.
My friend Mackey approaches me with a wide smile. Mackey is short for Mackenzie, she’s my best and only friend, and you see I just moved here (Yellow Springs, Ohio, a small town with a population of only 3,761) from New York. Truthfully I love it here, it’s like a big family, but I hate my stepmom, so I pretend to hate it. I visit my mom every summer, but I always wish she would move here, so I could live with her. She lives In the Nevada, Vegas; it’s fun for summers, but dysfunctional for a teenage life.
“Hey.” I say stuffing my coat in my locker.
“Hey, Arieo. I was wondering if you want to come to my house after school?” She replies, saying my nickname. She pronounces it Oreo. Which is why I call her Mackey, like Mac n’ cheese.
“Sure, I would love some time away from the witch.” I reply hinting my stepmom.
“Mine’s on vacation with my dad, my grandma is looking after me.” Mackey has a step mom too, and she’s just as bad as mine.
“Great, peanut butter cookies,” I laugh.
“The best there is.” She adds with a smile.
We walk into our math class, with dull looks, we both hate math, or more the teacher.
Mikey answers:
To fix:
1. The list is way too long. Keep the creepy things like “Some are bad” you can leave the information in the story, if it’s not going to be in the story you don’t need to tell it. (like if there’s no photos point 4 is useless.)
2. Difference between
-you are: “you’re”
-the object that is yours: “your”
Other little things you can fix by reading carefully, for example you switch between “step mom” and “stepmom”. Some sentences are a little awkward
3. Try to use “said” a bit more, especially here ” “Great, peanut butter cookies,” I laugh.”
4. Two evil stepmothers? Are you sure? That’s a bit too cliché. At the very least try to justify it, like “we became special friends because she also lost her mother …”
The pro:
1. I like how you pick your words. Your vocabulary. Not choosing absurdly fancy words like some people here, while not childish, either.
2. You start with something dramatic, the ghost, this poses a question the reader wants to know the answer to.
3. I perceive an attempt at humour between the girls. Too many forget how good a foil humour is to drama.
Jenny asks…
Can you read my writing, I would very much appricate feedback, I am very passionate about it, want opinions.?
Literary Technique Exercise
The New York lifestyle was the only way I had ever known before the past two months. In the summer of 1978, I had enjoyed the charcoal black beaches of Hawaii with my mother who I hadn’t seen or spoken to in the past 10 years. When I was only a child, my parents divorced, sending me and my father to the sardine packed appartements Chicago had to offer. It was extremely difficult for my father to find a job, so my toys never left the clearly marked moving boxes that sat in the corner of my bedroom. It was always tough finding friends and a school that my father could afford, that didn’t include barb wire or search dogs.
But when I was 15 and school was just about finished, my father had no choice but to send me off to my mothers as the apartment tenant was getting impatient about our overdue rent and my father had no expectations of finding a job anytime soon. Our neighbor in 2B loaned us the money for a plane ticket which would take me on a journey
that would change my life forever.
My mother was everything I expected her to be; so intelligent and gentle, and especially passionate about her work that she lived and breathed. For those summer days, we discussed her studies as a scientist, and what I still hold dearly to my heart, the fish of Maui’s coral reefs. The warm waters and graceful seaweed held a magnificent habitat to the Goby fish and coral shrimp, my Mother’s fervor. The way they protected and accepted each other for their weaknesses was so inspiring. For the first time ever, I could truly appreciate life outside the cramped city.
Returning from Hawaii, I came home to my belongings tucked into a small spot of a moving truck, along side my father with a tear of sadness in his eye. We moved to New York that night. I realized the city was no longer my home. My classmates treated me like Leper, and I began to miss my peaceful friends who presented calmness and tranquility. As I became an adult, I grew passionate about
the fish, just like my mother. Her death only made me work harder for my dream to be just like her, spending my life in the place I love along side the tropical fish and my mother’s sprit.
Ill fix the spelling, um it can only be a page so thats why it isnt very detailed. Appricate what you said about it lacking emotion, deff. will add to the depth in the, but like i said it can only be a page, double spaced and i had trouble even adding some details. thanks
Mikey answers:
Ok, I read it all. It was okay. Maybe shorten up some of the sentences. Also, your sentence structure is lacking. Try using different forms of independent and dependent clauses. The repetitive structure makes it a little boring.
On an emotional level, it wasn’t that satisfying. I know that it wasn’t very long, but I wasn’t really set up to like the charactor (or his mother). Therefore, I really didn’t care about what happened. Try making more of an emotional connection with the reader. That’s my suggestion. =)
Sharon asks…
Can someone please edit my paper. i appreciate your help?
The American Illusion
The American dream means justice, liberty, and happiness. What does it mean to have an American dream? For some people it means thriving for success in many ways and for others it means to make a difference. However, the American Dream varies, but all in one we stand as a nation.
There are problems with our social justice and equality. For instance, some people in America are locked up in jails, and are not to blame. How are they going to accomplish their American Dream? This world seems to be unequal in justice and something needs to be done about it. For instance, if you are with one of your friends and they have drugs in the car with them, you can also get arrested. This seems like an unfair situation because sometimes friends can keep hidden secrets. However, everybody has a different perspective on the American Dream.
For instance, the author in the writing “American Dream” depicts America as a landscape and as a collection of people and positions because there is a lot of history and opportunities in America. The Statue of Liberty represents the American dream because it was a gift from the French as a form of friendship. It stands in Staten Island, New York. In addition, America can be described as a landscape because there is a change in seasons. During the summer the flowers and trees are alive and blossomed. Then, in the winter the trees are leafless and full of white fluffy snow. These seasons can symbolize the people’s lives because in the summer people enjoy their lives more than in the winter. The weather is nice, which allows people to spend time at parks and travel to visit other places. Throughout the winter, people are often in the house
spending time watching television or even reading a book.
America is recognized as one of the most productive places where people can begin a better life. For instance, a girl’s parents brought her as a child to Connecticut so that she could have a better life. More jobs and opportunities are avaible and also better colleges where they can find financial aid.Her mother completed her masters as a teacher and her family is continuing their education in college. This is an example of a better life because they came from Puerto Rico where they offered fewer opportunities in education and less variety of jobs.
The speech” I have a Dream” addressed by Martin Luther King Jr., is an example of why America is a great place to find liberty and accomplish your dreams. For instance, Martin did the best he could to unite the blacks and whites together and he made the world better. He made petitions, speeches and never gave up in his dreams and goals. He made a difference because he believed that blacks and whites should deserve the same freedom and equality in our nation. He stood up for himself and helped defend other blacks. This is why he is known as one of the greatest man to make our nation stronger. In the other hand, there is still racism happening, but not as much as before. At this present time, blacks and whites are able to be seen together and could obtain the same jobs. Martin was brave and did not give up on his dreams. With this saying, Martin did make a difference and his speech touched people all over the world. He let the freedom ring from the mountains to the valleys. He was finally free at last and did not have to fear of the whites.
The author in “America the Beautiful” depicts America as a wonderful place full of excitement. The poem expresses how she feels about America. She describes the moment when the pilgrims came to our land. She also explains how beautiful America is and how god blesses the land. It also says that God blessed America by providing great things to happen. Things like good jobs, and a better living. People can relate to her emotions because America means more than just land to them. It means a place where people can enjoy their lives and live to the fullest. In addition, it is a place where people can accomplish their dreams and be treated equally. No one will judge people strictly because of their nationality or color. Furthermore, America is part of a good government and president. Our president has a lot of plans ahead and works to make our world better and safer. For example, he wants to stop all terrorism and help out our economy. Over all, America is a great beautiful place to reside in.
Friends and families can help others to reach for the stars. Ever wonder how beautiful America really is? Well go and achieve something that you never had the chance to. Go to college and enjoy life to the fullest. Overcoming obstacles boosts your self esteem and makes you thankful for being where you really are. For instance, a girl named Sara accomplished a lot in life.
It all started when she arrived in the United States while she was trying to dominate the English language. She felt so alone and thought that she would neve
Laura asks…
I’m 25, with inconsistent employment history… Can I qualify for a mortgage?
I’m 25 years old, and live at home with my mother. I graduated from college in May of 2008, and got a job at an engineering firm, working in IT, in September of 2008. I was subsequently laid off six months later in March of 2009. Its now February of 2010, and only now have I found a job, that I start in April or May, in the IT field.
With only six solid months of employment history, followed by a year of unemployment, then new employment for only a couple of months, will I qualify for a mortgage this summer?
I’m located in New York, and I have $50,000 available for a down payment. I want to purchase a two family home to help alleviate the costs. I have never bought a home, so I’m a first time buyer. Does this at all help my situation?
If I have to wait, I will, I didn’t want to wait too long to take advantage of the Buyers’ Market. But if I am going to be turned down, or will only qualify for one with a high interest rate, it doesn’t make sense.
If you need further info to help answer, please do not hesitate to ask. Thank you for your help!
Also, I have excellent credit. I have $30,000 in credit line, and no balance on any of them. When I use them, I pay them.
Mikey answers:
If you have other credit, that you have been able to pay on time and a credit score over 640, you might be able to get in, once you start working again. You are going to really want to check with a mortgage broker, not just go to a bank. A MB can tell you exactly what you will need, with out having to run from bank to bank. (They won’t tell you, the guy taking the applications at the bank has a quota, to keep his job, so he would let a bum apply) A mortgage broker knows who’s loaning money to who, and if you are not picky about what financial institution buys you loan, you will know where you fall.
Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job College
Paul asks…
What kind of summer jobs are available in Colorado?
I’m currently a college student interested in finding a job in Colorado for next summer. Are there any jobs that provide housing for their workers? I would need a place to stay since I don’t live in Colorado and I can’t afford something expensive.
Sharon asks…
What’s the best summer job you’ve ever had?
Just a short, term job that someone with no college experience could find or create for themselves.
Mikey answers:
One of my friend’s had a job selling vacuums door to door. He says with the knowledge he gained about sales and people, over his lifetime that job has paid him a ton!
My highest paying summer job was summer of ’79. Worked in a steel mill in East Chicago, Indiana. Made enough money for two years of college and way too much beer and pizza for me and Bob.
But my best summer job was my first job in San Antonio. Directed a JTPA program for at risk teens. Helped about 120 kids get half a day of reading and math and half a day at a job. It was very rewarding – not financially though.
James asks…
i need help finding a job for the summer?
Im 17 ive been looking for a part time job for ages now, on every website. Im on summer holidays now and really want to get a summer job, i dont care what it is, i just really want a part time job. Cause i get really bored at home, please help me find some jobs online that i can apply for. I have a CV aswell. I go to college i do hairdressing, but theres is no jobs for hairdressing. Please help. x
I live in ealing, and i havent really heard of them places before x
Mikey answers:
Well, you can always go for waitress like at Olive Garden, Hickory Grille and good places like that, or you could do babysitting for someone, there is a hairdressing place at Penny’s in the Eastwood Mall i believe i hope this helped :)
Linda asks…
How can I find a summer job?
I am going to be 19 years old and not once have I had a job. But now I’m in college and I really need to get a summer job to earn some money. I’ve been looking for jobs for a long time now and everything I see I feel like I need past experience, are there any places that have jobs that don’t require past experience? Plus, do I only have a chance at getting a job in retail or waitressing? because that is something I really don’t want to do.
Mikey answers:
Ofcourse you have a chance! May be you’re no applying enough. Keep applying for every position you could think of, Target, Burger King,..etc. Until you find your dream job.
Betty asks…
What jobs are always hiring college students?
I can’t seem to find a summer job… I applied to Pizza hut, shop rite, acme, six flags, mc donalds
i don’t have a criminal record so what gives? -.- I really need this summer job. I’m broke!
Mikey answers:
In my experience with fast food, a lot of places do not hire “just for the summer” and if they do, the people get hired in march or april, so that they are fully trained by the time buisness hits.
I make money online in my spare time using a site called CashCrate. It is a GPT (Get Paid To) site where you get paid to fill out surveys and complete free offers. You dont need a credit card and will never have to spend a dime. CashCrate is the most reliable and safest GPT site you will find on the internet. Where can I find a summer job in Roseville, California?
I’m 18 and I’m looking for a summer job in or near Roseville, CA before heading away for college. Where are some places you suggest I look into and/or apply? I was thinking Sunsplash but everyone probably applies there and it might be too late. Thanks for the help!
Mikey answers:
Try this: http://www.bunnyranch.com
Lizzie asks…
How can I find a summer/saturday job?
I’ve been looking for a saturday or summer job for a few months now and I’ve applied to lots of places. I’m finding it really hard to get a job but I really want and need one. Am I going wrong somewhere? Any advice?
I’m 16 if that helps any.
Mikey answers:
How old are you? It’ll be even harder if you are under 18! EDIT: 16 is still hard to get work(i’d know) at a good paying job. You’d get hired fast food pretty quick though. Maybe Cold Stone or Dunkin Donuts?
Finding a job can be luck sometimes. It has to do with whether there are any open spots at the places you are applying, if there are any new places opening in your area, or if you know someone who works there.
If the places you are applying just don’t want to hire, it’s not your fault or anything. I applied somewhere yesterday afternoon and got a call today in the morning! Other places that I applied three weeks ago still haven’t called yet! The place that called today is opening soon, so they need all the help they can get. If they want to open by a specific date, they’ll probably hire anyone who speaks English.
And make sure you always call and ask about your applications at places you really want to work at. Wait one week before calling. Ask to speak to hiring manager. But sometimes they’ll say “we’ll take a look at your application”. It’s a lie!!
Good luck!
Try craigslist.com, go to your city
Michael asks…
Where can teachers find summer jobs?
I am a special education teacher but am looking for a job over the summer. I would be interested in teaching, tutoring, or even babysitting. I have already tried Craig List, but would like some other ideas. I would mainly like to stay in the Jersey/Pa/Delaware area. Thanks in advance for your ideas!
Mikey answers:
Nurseries that are open all year may need ad hoc staff or staff during the holidays. Also you could try contacting youth clubs? Find their contact details and write to them or give them a call.
Ken asks…
how can i find a summer job for a teenager?
I live in Raymore, MO and I just turned 17 in March.
I would like a job just for in the summer that is for teenagers.
I don’t want to work at a grocery store, or restaurant. I would like to work somewhere fun.
I was thinking about volunteering at a daycare, but I need babysitting classes first. Would anybody know where I could take those at?
If not, then any suggestions of a fun work place would be appreciated. Thanks!
Mikey answers:
Your babysiting classes are available at the YMCA or the Red Cross, or most local fire departments will have the red cross come in once a month or so and you can take them there.
Also maybe try going to www.petfinder.com and hit every single animal shelter or rescue group in your area. I did that. I ended up working with the nuttiest woman who ran the most AMAZING animal rescue group. I think this woman was the original Cat Lady. I did all kinds of things from grooming and walking to outreach events where I would sit at a table and talk to people about pet adoption.
If you drive, try Meals on Wheels, or you can go to their location and cook or help put them together for transport.
I just hired a Mothers Helper for te summer. Her job is to do anything and everything she can to make my life easier this summer. She cooks if I need it, cleans, plays with my son….sometimes I am working from my home office so I really need her to file or type. Last week she walked my dog and did my grocery shopping. My husband pays her pretty good because she is indepensable. Try posting an ad for a mothers helper. You wont get bored!
Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job College
Richard asks…
19 and never had a job. Is this normal?
Im 19 and will be a junior in college starting August. I keep getting screamed at to get a job despite the fact that all my college expenses are paid for by scholarships. Im trying to get a job but I just can’t find someone to hire me. Is this situation normal among college students or are my parents right?
I also have experienced a lot of racism for being hispanic but I am ruling that out because there is no way everyone is racist in the south. So help where can I find a summer job for college?
Mikey answers:
If you are 19 and already a junior that is an accomplished I am 19 and just finished my freshman year. As for finding a job just apply as many places you can and somebody will hire you eventually. Luckily I live in a tourist city so its really easy for kids to find a job where I live. Also, talk to your college about getting a campus job possibly, they many times have positions they reserve for students.
Donald asks…
How can a 15 year old find a summer job?
I worked all last summer, and did rather well, but the place I worked at was overstaffed and therefore couldn’t accommodate my need for an afternoon shift this summer. I am only 15 in age, everyone says I act more like i’m 20… I’m going to college next year for god’s sake! But everyone’s cut off date seems to be 16, which i don’t turn until the END of summer. I really like working summers, and I’m having a hard time finding a place that will take me, even for minimum wage. Does anyone have any ideas?
(I can’t help but think my difficulty may have roots in older people rushing off to get second jobs because of the “terrible” economy, despite the fact they still have 2 vehicles and 200000 dollar homes)
Mikey answers:
Just go around your neighborhood and ask small stores if they are hiring. Small stores are more likely to hire you then bigger stores.
I understand what you mean about those people getting second jobs for their own selfish needs, noone needs 2 cars, etc. They are preventing other people from getting jobs when they have two jobs, which isn’t fair.
Chris asks…
I just got out of the army I m enrolled in college cant seem to find me a job that fits?
I just got out I feel stressed most of the time and i cant find a good job to do I started in college this summer im taking only one class due to the training ive been to i feel slow coming back to normal life,
Mikey answers:
1. Enroll in college full time and focus on getting your general eduction classes out of the way, which eventually you will be able to do a little self discovery of what it is you want to major in. Normally, you will need to know what you want to major in by the middle of your sophmore year.
2. Find a job that will work around your school schedule, i.e. VA Work-Study program (you can ask about this at the VA education department at your school since you are a vet).
3. Take advantage of your military education benefits, either college fund or G.I. Bill, whichever you qualify for. Use the money to supplement your part-time income. Remember, you only have ten years to claim your benefits and you will want to be enrolled in at least 12 units per semester to qualify for 100% of your benefits since it is 36 months or the total benefit amount whichever comes first policy. Again, this is the VA department of your school.
4. Apply for financial aid (FAFSA) at your school. As a struggling student with a low income you will be able to qualify for various state and federal monies (PELL grant) as well as subsidised government loans, but be careful not to abuse the loan program.
5. Live the simple life to get back in the swing of civilian life. Enjoy the possibilities of getting an education and the college experience.
As a Navy vet I too felt the pain of adjusting to civilian life. I did the exact above things to get my life on track and headed in the right direction. I can say that you will figure it out as I did and hopefully have fun along the way. I can say that I have my Business degree and am now working towards my MBA.
If you can handle the military, school will be a breeze. Good Luck!
Lizzie asks…
How can a 17 year old get a job during the summer?
All the college kids are already back, I couldn’t look for a job due to a prior commitment a few weeks ago, so how can I make up for lost time? Is there any way of rapidly finding places in need of work when your a teenager? Realistically I’d say I have 2…3 weeks tops of finding a job, I live in central southern massachusetts if that helps with anyone giving me instruction. Please help…
Mikey answers:
Culver’s minimum hiring age is 14 with a workers permit.
I called many stores because I am 14 looking for a job. This was the response they gave which makes me happy after looking for so long.
Find a local one go online and apply and go in store to apply or call and ask if they are hiring.
What I did was Google a bunch of business near my home and found their numbers using Google maps or their sites and I called and directly asked if they are hiring and what age do they hire at.
Try local grocery stores, pizza parlors, retail stores, fast food restaurants.
Daniel asks…
Where could I find part-time summer jobs around Santa Monica College? When should I start looking for one?
Hello. Me, my dad and my brother arrived from the Philippines exactly a year ago. I’m turning 18 this month, and i live in Torrance with my dad, i’m working part-time, i pay half of our rent which is $250. I’ve been out of school for two years since I graduated high school when i was 16.
I’m planning to move to Santa Monica this June and attend Santa Monica College this summer. The school said i couldn’t get loans because I’m starting irregularly, but i could start getting one this Fall semester. I looked up in craigslist and i found $500 rent per month with roommate which is cool for me.
I have a 7 months experience in kitchen prep (that is until end of May), my first job here in USA. I also have a year experience in customer service from my country. I need to find a part-time job near SMC (up to 45 minutes of bus travel is fine) because if I don’t find one, I’ll rely on a credit card for two months. I may have $800 as my savings.
The reason why I want to go to SMC even if I could just go to El Camino College is because, I’m an aspiring writer, i want to be as close as i could get to LA, I hate my job here, and I really want to start college as soon as I can.
any advices, comments, and suggestions? i need help, seriously.
Where can I find a summer job where I can live and work?
I’m looking for a full time summer job somewhere away from home, but I want to be able to save all the money I’ll be making. Does anyone know of any types of jobs where housing would be provided along with the job? For example, summer camps, hotels, or nannying jobs? Thanks!
Betty asks…
I need to find summer job like that!?
im a 17 yr old high school student and im trying to find a summer job so my mom wants to get a job that i could help someone around the office but idk were to find a job like that.
So can anyone tell where i could find a job like that ,has any information, or what should i do?
Mikey answers:
Most teenagers apply at jobs they know. Retail and grocery stores get 100 applications a month. If you go to office buildings and industrial areas and offer to do “office work”, you might have a better chance of finding a job this summer. Just go to any office building and introduce yourself at each office. Only fill out an application if they say they have an opening. If not, keep going to the next place.
Mark asks…
I’m having problems finding a part time/ summer work?
I’m having problems finding a part time/ summer work?
I’m 18 and at uni
I have no previous work experience
where could I find a summer job/ part time job in Glasgow
I have applied for numerous shops and supermarkets and fastfood places and cofee shops- I haven’t even managed to get a single interview
Mikey answers:
Hotels, local hospitals, failing that sign up with a job agency & let them do the looking around for you, they may even have something suitable already on their books.
N.B. You should not pay for this service, agencies earn their money from the people that employ you!
Good luck.
Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job College
Donald asks…
Help finding a job for the summer?
I am a freshman in college studying Emergency Management/Homeland Security. I’m leaning towards the Homeland Security side of things for a career, and with summer rapidly approaching, I’m hoping I might be able to get a job doing something along those lines. Obviously, with my limited experience, I’m not going to get a huge job, but I figured something along the lines of a security guard would be a good starting point. Can anybody think of any other jobs that might be along these lines? Thank you!
To the second responder, your opinion has nothing to do with this. If you don’t agree with me, don’t respond to my question.
Mikey answers:
Are you looking for just a “summer job” or a part time job? Since your pursuing a homeland security career, which in essence is a branch of law enforcement, a security guard would be an appropriate choice. It will give you good experience dealing with the public and handling emergency and security situations. You may also want to see if you can intern with any local police departments as a cadet or explorer. What can really boost your career is if you work for a job in homeland security. The two I would recommend is either the Coast Guards Reserves that way you can still go to school. Another one would be to work for the Transportation Security Administration as a airport screener. These can be part time and you will have your foot in the door with a federal agency, that way after you get your degree you can transfer to become like a special agent or investigator with ICE or CBP.
Mandy asks…
i can’t find a summer job. what else can i do with my summer?
i’m a college student home for summer break. nobody wants to hire seasonal employees. i’ve been trying to find work since mid-may. what else can i do with my summer that will be productive? thanks
Mikey answers:
Put up flyers around your neighborhood for:
babysitting
housesitting- taking care of peoples pets and plant while they are out of town for the summer
maybe go to a local pool or something and see if they are interested in hiring a lifguard.
Start a summer day camp with one of your friends doing activities (playing in the sprinklers, taking them to the zoo, etc.) and feeding them for the day it could be really fun and then u could end up babysitting for them.
Hopefully people will hire u if u are interested in doing this!!
Good luck!!
Mark asks…
How would I get a job away from home for the summer?
I am a college student, I go to school an hour away from home. I can only get odd jobs for some reason and the town where I live does not have a lot of opportunity. Where can I find jobs, like at a resort or summer camp where I can make decent money and get away for the summer?
Mikey answers:
There are plenty of summer jobs all over the place -just do a search on line. Find a room in someone’s house that you can rent and go do it. Perhaps you could go on Craig’s list and find a room. I would also try to find a job that could help you in the future and as long as ur parents are ok with it, go to it.
Robert asks…
Seriously, what the hell do I have to do to get a summer job?
I swear, I’ve applied to just about every store in my area, I’ve applied to other places outside of my area right after getting out of college for the summer (and this was back in May), but none of them gave me a call back, and even when I do call them, they tell me they’re considering my application, but still no call back. Is there some secret that I have to know in order to get one? I’m really getting mad at the fact that I haven’t made a cent this summer. And this isn’t new, I’ve dealt with difficulty in finding a job for the last few summers. Am I doing something wrong in my application?
Mikey answers:
You’re not going to like this, but if you haven’t made a penny yet, there’s no one to blame but you. There are other types of work to be found than stores.
Steven asks…
How to find summer jobs in London?
I plan on spending the summer in London with my friend. We are renting a room so we need to break even. It would be nice to get something lined up in advance so we can start paying our rent. Does anybody know any good sources? We are college students with no real experience and we don’t very much care what we do so long as it pays well. Also we’ve never been to London before.
I didn’t say we weren’t UK citizens. GOD some people are such assholes when it comes to immigration.
Mikey answers:
No permit no work,Europeans first choice as well,at present we have a couple of million people out of work,so you will need a permit to work.Just the same if I went to the States looking for work.
