Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job College

Ruth asks…

How will my low high school GPA in relation to my high college GPA effect my chances of finding a good job?

Currently, I am a first semester senior at a university in the Big Ten with a GPA that rounds up to a 3.4 and a major GPA of 3.6 in Computer Science. However, I had a high school GPA of 1.3 before I went to community college and fixed it up with a 3.78 GPA. I noticed that many employers still ask for my high school GPA on their formal applications for internships and I was wandering how my high school GPA would effect my chances for an internship during the summer. How would an employer view this kind of negative information? I would appreciate any type of feedback that I could get.Thanks.

Mikey answers:

No one cares about your HS GPA. Once you graduate from college it will never come up again. Hopefully this summer they will see that you are working hard in college and overlook your HS GPA.

Robert asks…

Where can i find a part time job in MD before I leave for college?

I’m 17 years old and turning 18 in the summer I am about to graduate form high school and leaving for university of md eastern shore in the summer. I really need a job to help pay for school any suggestion on where i can work?

Mikey answers:

Since you will be working short term how about a summer camp?

James asks…

Is it hard for first year part time law students to find a summer associate position?

I recently was admitted into DePaul College of Law as a part time student. I met with an advisor who told me I would be able to switch to full time after my first year ending in May. My question is, will it be hard to find a good summer associate job after my first year since I only have one year of part time law school under my belt? Will it help that they know that I will not be full time?

Mikey answers:

Yes it will, especially since many large firms are discontinuing these programs due to a glut of lawyers. It is almost certain that none of the big firms will pick you up, but you can probably find a job clerking with a medium or smaller size firm. The pay probably won’t be great but you need the experience. If worst comes to worst and you can’t find a paying job, volunteer somewhere. Though it might not seem like it right now, the experience and contacts you get from clerking during the summer are worth much more than money you earn.

Mark asks…

Job searching — Is this a good idea?

I’m a 19 year old college student and I’m trying to find a summer job. I’ve turned in six applications so far. Someone told me it looks good when you call the manager to “follow up” with your application after you’ve turned it in. Is this a good idea? And how long should I wait to call? Should I blatantly ask for an interview?

Any help in this category would be much appreciated. :)

Mikey answers:

Following up is fine and you should wait about a week. Do not be pesky with your calls.
You can say you are following up on your application and ask what are the chances you will get an interview. State run career centers have a summer job program for 16-24 year old youth. Contact your closest state run career center

Maria asks…

What can an unemployed college student do to make a productive use of her summer?

I’ve had the worst of luck trying to find a job and no one is available to hang out with.

How can I pass time productively and efficiently? I’ve literally been lying around my house the past few weeks with absolutely nothing to do.

Mikey answers:

Volunteer. Its also a nice thing to put on a resume.

Sharon asks…

I have no friends in high school and feel pathetic, what am I supposed to do?

The actual school and grades isn’t a problem at all, I have mostly A‘s and B’s, so that’s not a concern. But…..it’s a long story, I’ll try to shorten it down.

Last summer my mom and I moved from New York, where I lived my whole life, to Texas so she (my mom) could get a job. We live with my aunt and uncle and their kids. So basically, I left everyone I’ve ever known to go live with family members I barely even know.

Now, the new high school I go to is really……”cliquey”. I don’t seem to “fit in” to any of these cliques. Everyone keeps to themselves here, and each person is indulged into their own group or clique. These people usually share interests, dress the same, ect. There are a lot of these at my school, usually the cliques consist of 4 or 5 people but sometimes like 8 or ten. I don’t have what I would honestly call ”friends” (as in; people whom I can relate with and share common interests with and such.) Since being in high school I have found it difficult to make friends. The people I know usually talk about dumb stuff and subjects I’m not that interested in, or they’ll never like, really talk to me but just bicker on and on about random silly stuff so it’s never a full conversation I have with them. Some of them physically hit me, and I understand that they’re joking, considering they end every sentence with “just playin’”, but that’s just not cool with me. Some people, who I don’t even know, verbally abuse me in the halls, for no reason. Like today, some random dude threw something at me and it hit the back of my knee. I just ignored it and kept walking to class. While I was walking into my next class, I heard him say, “I bet he liked that…” What the fuck does that even mean!?

I know stuff like this happens at EVERY high school, but I digress.

I guess I just feel totally and completely isolated from everyone. I haven’t hung out with someone in months, or gone to the mall or the movies, or basically done anything fun. I never even use my phone anymore, since I have no one to talk to.

Is anyone else experiencing what I am? I just don’t know what to do with myself. Even my mom is constantly telling me that I need to make friends and get out of the house, but she’ll never understand what I’m going through.

Sorry for the long read, by the way.

Mikey answers:

I switched high-schools too and hated it the first year, but then the next year it got better mainly because I tried a little more and stopped pouting. When it comes to Texas people take pride in where they live and if you look like you don’t want to be there they aren’t going to want you to be there either. Never underestimate the power of school pride when it comes to Texas because that is one thing that ties in all the cliques together.
The thing about highschool is that it really doesn’t matter, because in college you lose most of those connections anyway and make more real ones. But to help out with your current situation: I found friends through school clubs. It’s the easiest and least stressful way to connect with people I promise
The thing is you only need to make like a few friends to get you started. Just start a conversation with someone you’d think would respond back and mention that you are new.

Chris asks…

I need tips and advice on moving responsibly?

HI, I’m going to be 21 years old soon, and currently live in a bad situation. I have to move out by this next summer. Where would one move to that will only have 1,000 dollars to move, no credit established and has a very important dog in her life to her. My dog requires good care that I want to provide her with, and I will like to move somewhere that will be best suited for her and for myself. I will have a graphic Design Associates that I will like to also find a job in.

My brother lives in Brooklyn New York, which would probably be awesome if I could crash at his place until I find my own for my profession, but like I said my dog is very important to me, and I would cry knowing she is cooped in a small apartment all day. She is a active spaniel. I would really appreciate the advice, because I’m sooooooo confused and beating myself up with the the time slipping by.

Thanks!

Mikey answers:

Run some ads on craigs list looking for someone to room with you are going to first and last month rent and sometimes a deposit to move in a place on your own also most utility companies will also charge deposits i would crash with brother save up some more cash and then establish my home

Robert asks…

I would like to audition for a disney channel series but need to know how and where?

Where to start?

I’m in NC could you find any auditions in NC?

Later this summer I’m going back to New York any auditions you can find?

I know most likely I’d get cast in a 2013 series, but I need to know how to get an agent, where some auditions are, and anything else that is important for this type of job.

If you happen to know a site that has list of disney channel auditions all over the USA that would be quite helpful as long as it’s legit. Auditions for an Agency as well. Please do not say start off with commercilas because Zendaya from shake it up got on a series first. Thanks :)
thx but could’ve gone without the pedophile remark…
thx but could’ve gone without the pedophile remark…

Mikey answers:

Your best shot is to go to LA and hustle like all the other aspiring actresses. Or you can put yourself on YouTube and sell yourself that way. Either way, you have to do something that sets you apart from others. Disney channel is also full pedophiles so, I really don’t understand how you could aspire to work for such a deceitful brand. Good luck!

Ken asks…

how to get a record label?

i know its more than tough to get a record label to sign you. I have tried almost everything – I’ve made demo CDs and press kits and sent them all over the map but i havent heard anything back. I live in sort of a dead town with almost no way out. most people around here live here for their whole lives.

I cannot do that. i have big big goals that i need to accomplish. i want to be a singer. i write my own music and i honestly think i have something. the way i see it, the only way out of my town and into greener pastures is to spend a summer interning at a record label in new york. I have applied for multiple internships there and i think i have an OK shot at getting one. IF i do get the job, would that be an appropriate way to get my foot in the door? After i’ve been there a while, is it innapropriate to give my demo cd to the label, or ask to pay for some studio time?

i just really need to find my way in. (and in no way am i “dissing” my town; it’s just not the place i need to be right now)

Mikey answers:

Make a couple of videos, put them on you tube, email them to everyone you know and if you have truly awesome “one in a million” talent, and some luck, a label will notice you. However, if you have anything less than awesome talent, you will need to pay your dues like everyone else that got a deal and work hard at perfecting your craft. Interning at a label is a good idea, but it will take more than that. You will need to perform a lot at any club you can in order to develop a following. Recording with good people, having a good web presence with videos is important too. Interning will help you meet the right people, but competition is fierce out there and labels always favor the artist who is the complete package. What is that complete package? Solid radio ready songs, strong vocal, great look, seasoned performing skills, hard work ethic and a great attitude.

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job In New York

James asks…

i feel like everythings just…hopeless now…?

Well a while ago I was “diagnosed” (by my doctor after taking a test) with depression. I also have anxiety and I’m really shy, and in the past few years:
(I’m 14, was in 5th grade when I graduated from my old school and had to move to my current school for 6th grade, now I’m going into 10th)
I’ve moved schools and my “friends” from my old school dumped me and became popular
Hurricane Katrina hit and basically put my whole family into CHAOS (a lot of people lost their homes and people lived with us for a few months)
My neighbor, who I was BFF with since we were 3, started being a
b!tc* to me and saying horrible stuff to me on aim and also dumped me
My grandmother had a lot of medical problems that really stressed my mom out, then she died a few days before my birthday in August
My “new school friends” started ignoring me and dumped me (well I kind of deserved that because I was being kind of distant because of all the other things that were happening)
I saw my crush from my old school at one of our school dances, and he didn’t recognize me or something so I tried to tell one of my “friends” but she told everyone else and I felt horribleeeeee
And most recently I quit gymnastics and thought I had friends there but I went to help out at the gym’s gymnastics camp and I found out they hate me too
And my dad might lose his job, so my mom cancelled our New York trip that we’ve been planning since January and we’re also cutting back on a lot of stuff and trying to save money

I probably sound like a little crybaby to a lot of people here, but things just keep getting worse and worse it seems and not a lot has happened that could make me believe that things will get better.

The only thing that makes me feel okay is when I spend a lot of time at a barn about 20 minutes from our house(but now my dad’s complaining about how far away it is, and that’s the closest one to where we live). I’m helping every day with summer camp there (starting again monday I haven’t been this week because of gym camp) and learning a lot about horses and making new friends and stuff. Tuesdays I have lessons but I’ll only be able to go there once a week during school and IDK what’s going to happen to me then.

How can I make things not seem so miserable??? I mean…everything’s just messed up…

Mikey answers:

This may just be the dumbest answer, but it seems to help me. Forget about everything and ride the nicest horse you can find. Tell the horse how you feel. If people find you physco, who cares. Once you graduate, you can begin life a new your way. Just wait and everything will be okay sooner or later. People may dump you, but animals never will.

David asks…

How can I learn to accept that…?

First and foremost, let me start by introducing myself. I’m a 17 year old guy (turning 18 in a couple of days) from New York.

Moving on, I graduated high school and am starting to work and take classes, and I really find it hard to keep track with my social life at the same time. School and work seemingly take up ALL my time. It’s ridiculous. All the people and girls I’ve met over the summer and have worked hard to stay close with are starting to fade away. A couple of girls I have no time to take care of myself and to look good, I barely have time to sleep.

I really want a car, the car I’m targeting is $10,000, and I’m currently working and saving up for one. With my job, I should have enough in roughly less than a year.

I realize that work and school comes first, and it’s a necessary evil, and my social life and girls will come later, but I’m finding trouble accepting this fact.

Can anybody share some wise words, any advice, suggestions, etc, would be appreciated.

Mikey answers:

If these people really care about you, they’ll understand that you need time to manage your life. As long as you’re not feeling super lonely, you definitely should take pride in your work in the meantime. And the women will respect a guy with some independence. There’s that song, No Scrubs: “A scrub is a guy who can’t get no love from me: hangin’ off the passenger side of his BEST FRIEND’S RIDE, tryin’ to holler at me!”

There’s a phrase: “You can’t have your cake and eat it, too!”

Also, let me paraphrase Al Pacino in Scarface: “First, you get the money. Then, you get the car. Then, you get the women.”

Once you get the car, you will feel SO GOOD that you can have a long-term plan and follow through. Dude, it shows you’re a man. Real adults do this. Plus, you’ll take good care of it because you worked so hard for it. I’m still driving a nice new car I bought in 2003 which runs about $10K used. I wouldn’t part with it unless I absolutely had to. Love that car! :)

Ruth asks…

Mikey answers:

Its best if you stay in high school because G.E.D is good but high school diploma is great. And you young. Your only 15. Its best if you just get a high school diploma.

Donald asks…

Where to find affordable Vespas?

So for my 17th birthday this summer, I’m asking for a Vespa scooter.
A cute one, maybe cream & mint green like one of my friends has ^_^
I’m flexible with the color, of course.
I want a Vespa & not a car because I’m planning on going to college in New York (I picked out a few I can definitely get into & others where it’s 50/50 so I’m definitely going) & I won’t need a car because it’s New York!
But, a Vespa would be perfect.
Especially for this summer!
I’m trying to get a job & the buses never run on time so a scooter would be great!

So, what dealerships have affordable Vespas?
& any details I should worry about?
Thanks in advance!:)

& I’ve already thought about rainy/snowy days.
Buses/my parents’ cars will be my backups.

Mikey answers:

Since you friends have scooters wouldn’t be easier to ask them since you see them more than we do.

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job College

James asks…

What should I do for a summer job?

I am a first-year college student studying biology. I am going home for the summer, and I would really like a summer job that is remotely applicable to what I am studying. So far, all I have found is the position of a pharmacy cashier. If anyone has any other ideas, please help! Thanks.

Mikey answers:

Steven asks…

How can I find a biotechnology job as a college graduate?

At the end of the summer I will be graduating from college with a bachelors degree in biotechnology. How do I find a job biotechnology? I don’t even know where to begin. I thought about using those job sites such as monster.com but I’ve heard that it’s difficult to find jobs on there. I really would like some guidance. I don’t really mind moving from where I am at now. I just need to have a job solidified by the end of the summer. How can I do this?

Mikey answers:

Hi, job sites and newspaper ads are the best (maybe the only way). I’ll give you two sites on biotechnology jobs here so you can check for something :)

Thomas asks…

What jobs are available this summer for high school studemts?

I want to work over this summer, but it’s hard to find a job because the summer already has begun and college students are home. I’d truly appreciate it if you could inform me with any available jobs in Chicago for high school students.

Mikey answers:

I like eTeenJobs. They have a great website set up for teenagers looking for summer jobs. They help you start thinking about your career after school and have tons of information.

Hope this helps!

Susan asks…

I’m a college student looking for a summer job teaching English in Japan. Where do i start?

I’m a first-year student at UCLA. All I have is this summer, late june to late september to work. I don’t know Japanese yet (I’m barely starting to study it) and I don’t have formal teaching experience. Somehow I have to make enough money to cover airfare and find a place to stay…I don’t even know where to start. Most teaching positions seem to require a bachelor’s degree and one-year teaching contract. I’m not looking to make money. I just want to break even and cover the costs of going/living in Japan. Is this even possible?

Thanks.

Mikey answers:

I would call a temp. Agency, and try to get a short-term job, and/or do some odd-jobs for people (mowing lawns, etc.)

As far as language goes, start with letters, as theirs are different, and you need to start with the basics.

Good Luck ^_^*

Mark asks…

should i do my 3rd year in college or start looking for work?

hiya. i am 19 and am studying horses at college. i was just wondering if you could share your opinion with me. what do you think would be more worthwhile, going to college for my final year studying pretty much theory and coming out with a diploma in horses or to finish college this summer and try and find a job in trekking/holiday riding industry and start learning practically?
please tell me what u think. i would really value your opinions.

Mikey answers:

Finish college! If you’ve only got one year left just go for it!

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job In New York

Charles asks…

It’s the middle of summer vacation…?

So it’s the middle of summer vacation, I just graduated high school, and I am headed for the City College of New York (CUNY). My first day of class is August 26th, but until then I have some time and I’d like to find a part-time job. Thing is, I’ve never been employed while I was in high school. I never bothered to, feeling it might take a toll on my academics and other activities. I don’t require working papers as of now because I am 18. However, seeing how I’ve never been employed before or never attempted to, I’m finding it a little difficult trying to find a job.

I have two things I can try to do. I live in Port Washington, and I live about 15 minutes away from the Port Washington Train Station, and I can head to Penn Station daily without much problem. So I was thinking of trying to find a job in the city because not only are there a lot more options, but it’s also convenient because if I got a job there, I’d be able to keep working there even as school begins. On the other hand, I could try to go local and find a part-time job around my town. I live next to a pretty industrialized place here, with lots of little stores, shops, and small businesses available, although I’m not sure on how to approach these places because I’m not sure which ones are employing.

Here are my problems:
If I decided to work locally, whether at the local public library, at a Gamestop, Stop & Shop, or some fast food place, I could only maintain my job there until August 26th, when my first class begins, as I’ll be moving in to the city and my dorm. Not only is that inconvenient, but I think it would look bad to whoever was kind enough to hire me. And then of course there is the idea of working in the city. I was able to find a ton of job openings online from snagajob.com, but have yet to check other lists like craigslist, etc. However, I’m finding it rather questionable to travel all the way to the city everyday (despite it being rather easy for me) just to work everyday at, let’s say, Pizza Hut or something. My questions are:

1) Should I try to seek a part-time job in the city or somewhere local, even though I’ll only be able to go local until the 26th of August?

2) If in the city, then what kind of job would be appropriate for a first-timer like me? I’d like a reasonably well-paying job suitable for a high school graduate in his first year of college. However, the gap seems to be so big between working at a Pizza Hut and, as snagajob.com listed, as a retail sales consultant at AT&T, Bloomingdales, or JC Penny, which seem to offer only executive/managerial positions, which I’m obviously not ready for yet. Maybe, in truth, I really should start out working at a diner or fast food service, or any other retail shop/chain store rather than an ambitious position elsewhere?

3) If I go local, what is the best way to find places that are seeking employment other than the occasional store/shop/chain that posts “Now Hiring” on their window? Should I just go in, ask the manager if they’re currently seeking employment, and go with that? Could it be posted in the local newspaper?

Thank you everyone in advance for your replies!

Mikey answers:

Right now, you will need to put in applications until you get a job. You will be lucky to find something, so don’t think you have a whole lot of choices to make. Get going, and look at fast foods, service jobs, because with out experience, this is normally your only choices.

Lizzie asks…

Will I have a problem finding work in montreal?

I am getting married and getting my permanent residency and then moving to Montreal next summer,
I am a girl in my late twenties living in New York City now, i have a wide background of work, From Being a flight attendant / Supervisor who started an airline and worked with the FAA, to an actress, writer (got 5 screenplays and 8 novels), worked in the W hotel lounge, worked at TD bank as a liaison in merchant services, and am a director’s assistant.

But I do not speak French, i am starting to learn the basics, but it is difficult, will i have a problem finding work because of that? I am hoping to get a job in production/casting, or become a private investigator. I’m a very good looking girl and I’m very personable, I just hope I can find a job I like there.

Mikey answers:

If you worked at the W you’re probably good looking enough to get a job in the service sector even without a lot of French. You’d just have to find places with large English clientele. I know people who don’t speak French at all who work as bartenders and waitresses.

The higher end restaurants will probably be less picky about French because the clientele will be largely bilingual.

There’s a possibility you may be able to access free intensive French classes because you are a new immigrant. I would definitely try and take advantage of this.

Getting a job isn’t going to be easy, but it sounds like you have enough other skills that it will be easier for you than it traditionally is for other non-French speakers.

You may also want to consider commercial modeling, working in the fashion industry or other areas where your looks will be an asset, but where the people are cosmopolitan enough that French will not be an absolute necessity.
Good luck.

Ruth asks…

How can I find an internship over the summer if I’m in high school?

I would really like a paid internship for over the summer to experience a working life and get experience living somewhere else for a few weeks. I would especially like an internship in the film/entertainment industry, in editing and/or managing and filming. I looked into a NASA internship, but unfortunately, for me, you have to be 17 to qualify (I’m 16).

Are there any sites that could lead me to discovering a paid internship? I would really like to go to California/New York and work on an interesting job. Thanks!

Mikey answers:

Wow – you’re already thinking about this at 16? Good for you!

The good news is: you’re right to be thinking this way.

The other good news is, you should absolutely shoot for an internship.

Here’s the news you may not want to hear

1) most internship hosts are not going to be in the position of taking responsibility for a minor – as in, somebody under 18 – so travelling to another city, arranging for room/board may be tough. Unless you have a relative/family friend or something. But still, a lot of internship hosts will be leery.

2) finding a paid internship is tough for students in college and grad school, it’s going to be even tougher for a high schooler

You say you’re interested in a bunch of things. I’m going to give you some unconventional advice. That’s bad.

Let me rephrase. It’s good from the sense that you are dynamic and curious about the world. It’s bad in terms of a career. Narrow your focus. Most folks won’t give you this advice, so take it for what it’s worth. Take the list of things you’re passionate about and interested in. Choose one. Then, take that one thing and get as specific as you can.

Don’t be interested in the film/entertainment industry. Be interested in the film/entertainment industry as it relates to black and white movies produced in northwest Oregon on Tuesday’s in the summer involving farmers who wear straw hats and like to eat jelly beans. Get specific. Find a niche.

Then, once you have that niche. Dominate it. Write about it. Blog about it. Get to know the other people who are interested in that niche. Become the world’s expert in that niche.

You ask how to find an internship? 1) Figure out your niche 2) Dominate it 3) Go find people/places that work in that niche – let them know you’re going to be their intern.

Hope that helps!

Mark asks…

how easy is it to get an internship at a record label?

or some other music place?
im majoring in business at penn state and i really want to major in music business so i can get a job in artist relations, or artist management. but i cant find a good college that i want to go to.;
so i was thinking that durning the summers i could go to new york city or somewhere and intern for a record label place.

Mikey answers:

It’s not easy, those are really sought-after positions, so you better start working towards it now. Most labels won’t even think about hiring you if you don’t have at least some experience, and you cannot get experience unless you get hired. So … I’d say, do what smart students do when they want to get into their University of choice. Look for places where you would like to get into, and start sending kick-butt letters, make phone calls, be persuasive.
Talk to anyone who could be a contact or know of a contact.
Do research on the types of audio-related businesses in your city. Use the Internet. Go to the library and look up the many directories, and read the weekly and monthly recording industry trade magazines and journals. Get on the phone, and do some informational interviews with the recording industry business you would most like to work for. Even knock on people’s doors. Do whatever you have to do to get an internship. Internship opportunities do not come knocking on your door. You have to motivate yourself to get involved with this industry.

Even this is going to help you, a lot of doors will slam on your face, but some might open for you. Then, be prepared to ride the roller-coaster of your life. IF you get hired, sometimes you will feel on top of the world and there are going to be days where you’ll think it was not worth the trying.
You will have to take the good with the bad. Interns may start out as the low men and women on the ladder, but those that impress with their positive attitudes and dedication to their work, are more likely to stay.
Read this here, it will help you get some insight,

Donald asks…

I cant seem to find a job

well i live in buffalo new york and i just cant seem to find a job I’m 17 i have my working papers and i thought it would be easier in the summer but its seem pretty hard any suggestions?

Mikey answers:

Try Buffalohelpwanted.com or Monster.com, if you get the Sunday edition of the Buffalo News there is a job section in the paper. Take bus #34 down Niagara Falls Blvd. And place your application in the many stores and resturaunts on this strip. Bus #5D will take you to the Boulevard Mall.

The job market is pretty tight here, my husband has been unemployed for a month now. The college kids will be going back to school soon and the job market won’t be as flooded as it is now.

Good luck to you.

Your Questions About Make The Most Of Your Day

Carol asks…

This sounds crazy but, What do you people think is the most painful way to die? And I mean the very most. Go!?

Yup you cant escape Death, thats for sure. But just for curiosity, What is the most painful death of them all death? Whether sudden death or slow death, suicidal or non-suicidal. Give me the one that really freaks you out when it comes to the ways to die.

Go on make your Day!!..

Mikey answers:

Burning to death is the one way i do not want to go

Daniel asks…

Life is terminal. None of us get out of this alive. So, are YOU going to make the most out of your life today?

Stop work.

Take a day off.

Join me!!!

I see fertile land that was stolen from me.

Let’s reclaim it! And be happy again, as one united people!
Oh Teddy, I love your answers, honey. Bless you!
I only speak of old history. Gerrard Winstanley etc…

;o)

Cheer up you monkeys!

Mikey answers:

I’ll stick to taking a day off, what a great suggestion! Maybe I’m still alive today while I’ll be vacationing but I’ll surely be dead tomorrow, boss will just kill me for not showing up. I love your optimism though, you have just made me feel alive again, many thanks =))

Chris asks…

How do you make friends at your place of work?

I am a floating within this company so I’m constantly going to different areas to fill in whenever they are short due to absence or terminations. It’s 19 branchs that I’m responisble to cover and for the most part I enjoy every branch that I have to attend. But it’s 2 branches in particular that I feel like a totatlly outcast. I sit alone in my area and I never get invovled into the conversation because I always get snubbed whenever I offer my opinion. I know the workplace is suppose to be about work and not making friends but being alone makes the day so much longer and I would love to get involved or be invited into the other conversations, please help.

Mikey answers:

That I cant tell you a good answer for that. If they do not invite you into conversation they are just being plain stupid. They should realize you are there doing them a favor. They’ll miss you once you don’t show up and for some reason their workload becomes a little heavy. Are you able to reject the request that go to that particular facility? If so make an extra day or two to make up for it where you are appreciated. Good Luck.

Helen asks…

How do i make the most of my high school years?

everyone says that high school is the best days of your life. i’m not seeing why. i really don’t want to miss out. what can i do to make sure i have the best high school experience ever?

Mikey answers:

You make the most of high school years by taking advantage of the clubs, sports, dances, etc. By getting active in school functions you start meeting different people. High school won’t come again, it goes fast and when you get out in the real world you will realize everything you should have done. Teenagers that go to school to just get by end up thinking that the fun is on the weekend. Try to remember that high school is for you, not the popular kids, so try not to spend time wishing it is all over. Try also to find one bright spot in each class or teacher. It’s a struggle sometimes but later on you’ll be glad you got involved with the fun activities at school.

Thomas asks…

There is no “right” or “wrong” answer. Which of the following is the most important for a girl’s night out?

(1) a big “sisterhood” group with the friends that make your day
(2) a sappy chick flick
(3) giving each other make-overs

Mikey answers:

Definitely #1!!!!

And i hope #2, lol.

I intend to go to USA this summer maybe next week or the next one, i do not know for how much time but i think my french passport will enable me to stay there for less than 3 months. Is it possible for me to go there and find a boss who would like to sponsor me for me to get a work permit? Will i have to come back in France to do the paper work? I do not have a driving license what city should i go to? I intend to go back to school and obtain a degree after saving some money in the US (i prefer to go to school later for private reasons) I’m trying to find cheap accomodation in the US (i ran into some perverts on craiglist) so if you have any tips…….

Thanks in advance.
What field would suit my profile the most? What are the fields which need workers?
I’m going in USA this summer where am i the most likely to find a job?

Mikey answers:

Kansas city has the lowest average rent in the country so thatll save you some euros

Laura asks…

Some days I wish for death and others I cannot even believe the life I have led. Where and what should I do ?

A lot of people that meet me have such low expectations of me. Maybe it’s because of my appearance or maybe it’s because of my demeanor.

I am heavyset. My doctors over the years have commented that I need to lose weight. Yet my physical weight doesn’t show in my body. My legs and arms are fairly toned. I am not afraid of work and I move around when I work but I don’t exercise out of that. I am 21 years old. I am diabetic and had been on medications since I was 15 to help control it. It didn’t matter how my diet was; my glucose was always a bit higher than it was supposed to be.

Recently my medication was changed and it’s pushing my blood sugar levels down. I was officially diagnosed with diabetes January of this year. I was diagnosed with PCOS (poly-cystic ovarian syndrome) last summer.

They found two masses on my ovaries, one on each side, besides the cysts that already covered them. They do not know how long I had it. I was very sad. On Christmas eve of last year I had a CT scan performed. The one on my left ovary may be a calcified dermoid cyst. They are not exactly positive and only a biopsy can determine what it truly is. There is also a mass on my right ovary but they said it’s not significant other than it is not a “normal” cyst. I have never had consecutive periods though in my life or have ovulated normally on my own without birth control pills to regulate the cycles.

I stopped taking birth control pills November of last year because my lining kept shedding for two months with roughly a one week break in between them.

I was supposed to have surgery done in January but that was when I was diagnosed with being diabetic.

I am at a loss of what to do with myself. I have bouts of severe depression and have my entire life. I used to take medications that helped me tolerate life. All of my diseases are controllable but I am tired. Not only is it expensive in the long run; I am miserable without medications to make me feel remotely happy.

I know there’s people out there who talk about how medications aren’t “needed” by the body or mind but those people have never truly experience a life where things just slip without reason. There are also people out there who preach about how I need to find a passion and find a reason to live but honestly I never had a conscious will to live.

I had a fairly pleasant life. I my own personal struggles as a child and my parents are refugees but they never had any absence of love for me. Yes, we definitely struggled as a unit. We still live paycheck to paycheck, but we no longer live in public housing.I also have not lived with them after I graduated high school.

I done so many things with my life and semi-independent. I’ve worked as a conservation corps member at 15, flew a plane at 16, been to Paris and France without family, held down down jobs from 15 till now, graduated high school with honors, attend an amazing private college and made it so much further than my peers… yet I am miserable.

I’ve gotten multiple awards and done amazing things but yet I am socially awkward. I am afraid of social situations and of life. I become paralyzed if I am in unfamiliar surroundings with other people. I push myself to the limit and I can be in a roomful of people but I dread the interaction. I can give a speech to an audience and have no fear but yet when I have to speak face to face and interact it becomes so hard. One on one I’m perfectly fine but more than that I start to feel like a third wheel.

I’ve been in rehab and counseling for multiple suicide attempts, drug, abuse, and sex addiction.

I have found and lost God but still remain spiritual. I don’t have much of an urge to help others yet I always do when I am able to because I do. It’s so hard to explain this frustration.

I don’t have many friends and my family and I are not super close. I am so tired and at a loss of what to do with myself.

Mikey answers:

Kaliyan, I have absolutely no idea what it must be like to walk in your shoes, but my heart goes out to you and you will be in my prayers.

One thing that I have learned over the years is that God can help us to walk down the dark paths of life if we come to Him on His terms. Your poor health is not the result of any sin that you have committed, nor is it any form of punishment from God. It is simply the result of living in a fallen and corrupted world. Still God wants you to know His grace so that He can walk with you through this life. I know of a dear lady named Joni who was paralyzed from the neck down at age 16 and has been in that condition for over 45 years. Yet she has drawn upon the strength of her faith in God and is one of the most joyful people you will ever meet. Perhaps her resources can be of help to you. I’m sure if you google up Joni Erickson Tada that you can find her website. Perhaps you could find some of her talks on youtube as well. I am sure that she could be a great encouragement to you.

God bless you, Kaliyan. Remember, I and many others here will be praying for you.

Sandy asks…

I’m 16 and i REALLY! need help with deciding what to do with my life. please help.?

Ok so lately I have been full of mixed feeling about everything and its all been caused by my confusion about what to do with my life. I am 16 and I’m in the middle of my summer holidays after finishing year 11. Since like the begging of year 11 I have had my heart set on going to john Rigby College to study English language, Media, Film and sociology, I wanted to go because it is a change from my high school and it is a much better building, but the main reason is the social aspect of it all like meeting new people and making new friends. But this has all been flipped on its head because I have found out about a job that I could go for that is really good and pays really well. The job is at British Aerospace and I will be doing a five year electrical engineering apprenticeship. I have a friend who is in the same year as me who has already got on straight from high school and so is not going to any college apart from his day release where he studies at a local college for a day each week for 12 hours. me and him are very similar in terms of grades but we do have differences because he is slightly better at maths than I am whereas I am better at English than he is. But anyway, if I go for the job I will have to go to my schools sixth form as the other colleges don’t do the course and I will loose connections. They take 5 people on every year; I think I will be able to get the job as I have a few connections like my friend had. And my electronics teacher has also said that he will recommend me. Even when I am on the apprenticeship I will be earning around 10k – 13k for the first year and it goes up every year until I start, and when I do actually start I will be earning 30K per year so it is really good money I will also be travelling around the world to places like Italy and France. I enjoy electronics as I am good at it and I find it interesting, from an early age I have always been interested in engineering as I used to be always building things and opening things up to see how they work.
I keep thinking that if I go to sixth form and go for the job then I will be missing out on life, like meeting lots of new people and experiencing life at Uni, but will it be that good in reality or will it be lots of work and not much time to have a laugh and also lead onto a crap job rather than going for a job that could be great but could end in me feeling like I have missed out.
So I guess my question is what do you think I should do, go to college and then Uni and see what happens from there or go to sixth form and go for the job?

Mikey answers:

You should thhink about the fact that anywhere you go you are going to meet new people. What about expieriencing life at Bristish Aerospace? You know new experiences await you no matter which course you take. Take the one that makes you feel good.

Steve Jobs said something worth some thought. He advised, “Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma – which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of other’s opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” Deep inside of each of us is a dream, something that will make us happy, and something that will make us who we were meant to be.

“Live a life worth living.” Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone, a prized MMA fighter, daredevil, and one who most would call an adrenaline junkie, said that. Time gets past us before we realize it. One day we start school, and then all too soon we are on our way out the door with diploma in hand. It would be easy to look up one day and be about to retire, never having accomplished much to be satisfied about. We should all sit down at some time and set goals in our lives. Set goals that we want to realize and take a step daily to put us on the path to reach a goal.

Charles “Mask” Lewis, an entrepreneur, a businessman, but most of all an average person like each of us, may he rest in peace, said, “Just take a step toward your goals daily—fearlessly, wholeheartedly, digging and dreaming within yourself, believing that as you push on through sacrifice, you will one day stand alone on top of a hill that you created that now encourages and inspires others to chase their dreams, knowing that through tenacity and patience anything can be achieved if you simply BELIEVE.”

Sharon asks…

Help with study abroad essay?

I’m applying to study abroad in France over the Summer and reached the section of the application where I have to write an essay. The topic isn’t your typical topic though…instead of asking why i’d like to study abroad it’s asking me what I will provide to the program. I find this weird just because I kinda figured the point of these programs were to provide me with opportunities instead of me having to tell them what I would be bringing. But, nonetheless, this topic has caused quite a challenge to me. I’m taking the very basic intro to French class this semester so I figured I could at least mention I could help the people that know zero French translate some things (but even then there will probably be many more more-qualified people for the job). Other than that I really don’t know. I don’t have any true leadership experience and very little work experience and I’m not sure what else I could touch on to beef up my essay. Any suggestions? :/

Mikey answers:

Think about WHY they’re asking this. My interpretation is that they’re asking “Why the heck are we going to invest in you, when you could bail out, and there are many other candidates? Because they’ve heard “I want to be a well-rounded individual in order to fully function in our multi-faceted country as well as develop new outlooks blahblah-mom-said-to-say-this-blah” thousands of times. I think they’re asking “Tell us why YOU, specifically, are the one for this opportunity? Who is this James kid and why are we letting him use our program in order to go to France?”

Try the selling yourself route, but in the actor-esque way. Stand out, don’t just talk about “I’ll share American stuff”. :) You need to brag at this point, and tell them what is original about “James”. What are your characteristics and why are you going to be picked? If you are someone who will truly glean a positive impact from going to France, then tell them why. They don’t want to send James to France if he’s going to be timid. Be James-going-to-France and achieving the rewarding skill of fluency, instead of classroom taught conversational skill. Be James-going-to-France and proving to both US society and French society that you can augment/expand a biased perspective of a people and age group.

Are you self-motivated? (Obviously so, if you’re studying abroad- but play that up if you feel it’s applicable. I mean don’t just say “I’m self motivated”. You should explain the positive consequences of this trait and how it gives back.)
This too, (Maybe. I’m not sure about taxes and education but it seems like a good point considering it seems no one takes language seriously in school.) – tax money going into education is actually benefiting a student because you’re not just sitting in a class “learning” French, similar to the way you “learn” your weekly vocab, you are being proactive and putting use to the requirement of a foreign language.

Good luck! I hope that your essay sells your personality and your ambition. If you’re going to get something done, you have to get passionate. So have fun with that, and reach out from an electronic or paper application to become a true human being.

Ken asks…

I need prayer for school and finances, please. Will you help me?

1.) I applied to study abroad in France in the summer, but I’m afraid I won’t be able to afford it, so I’m praying for a scholarship or something so that I can go.

2.) I have a test and an interview tomorrow for a scholarship to study in Japan. I tried last year and passed the written test, but they didn’t like my interview, so I’m praying it goes well this year.

3.) I’m barely getting by in my Chinese class right now and I don’t know if I should just drop it and take it from another teacher next time because this one grades way too hard and isn’t really good at teaching. Please pray that I can either miraculously get an A or that I figure out if I should just drop the class or not.

4.) My hours got cut at work and I’m looking for another job, but I don’t know if I should even be working more because I could use the extra time to study. On the other hand, if I don’t work, I won’t be able to afford my basic expenses and I’m barely getting by right now.

Prayers and suggestions are welcome.
In case nothing goes the way I want it to, please also pray that I find peace and recognize that there is something better for me instead. Thank you all so much for caring.

Mikey answers:

Your last comments were just right. Your life is too complicated for me or you to know for certain what is best for you.

I think you should pray to God to guide you in all that you do. You should also ask God to help you to be more open to His Holy Spirit, and you should ask for the strength and courage to understand and follow the promptings of the Holy Spirit. Tell God that you are grateful for the saving mercy of Jesus Christ.

I am praying for these things for you as I write this. I regularly pray for these things for myself. I usually begin praying by confessing my sins, and begging God to forgive me. I confess serious sins sacramentally to a priest. Then, reconciled with God by His forgiveness, I ask Him to guide me in all my ways.

Ask God to help you to behave in accordance with His Will. Ask Him to help you to do the best with whatever opportunities and resources you have.

I am Roman Catholic.
I am actually praying for your well-being in all matters.
Peace be with you.

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job In Spain

Donna asks…

Do you think i’ll ever get myself a boyfriend or fall in love? i’m 18 please read!?

well i’m 18, i would say i’m a good looking girl well so people say lol, not being vain or anything! I’m a blonde girl with green eyes.
I have had a few boyfriends not many though, i broke up with them because number 1 one of them was a stalker obsessive type and the rest i wasn’t in love with and didn’t really fancy them.
I havn’t been with a guy since like last year but maybe its because i havn’t been really socialising i have been studying the past few weeks and my best friend has a new boyfriend who she spends 24/7 with so i don’t really go out that much.
Well i hope to maybe meet a guy when i go to spain next summer, i’m spending all next summer in spain for a few months for a break for myself and for an experience. I hope to find a bar/waitressing/hotel job and find a place to rent. I’m really looking forward to it!
I love spain and the people in it, I go every year the past good few years, and every time i go over to visit i meet a lovely spanish guy over there and have sooo much fun! I know that when i go over there to work it won’t be the same as going over on holiday but i always wanted to live there and this is an experience for me. I love the country!
So what do you think? I would love to fall in love over there! Its just I start college in september and not really into the guys from here (ireland) so i’m just going to concentrate on my studies and just look forward to next summer by the way i’m planning on going over around march/april, the sooner the better, i’m really looking forward to it!
So whats your opinion? do you think I’ll meet a guy over there fall in love maybe?

Mikey answers:

Yes why not!! When it comes , it just comes.. Why don’t u study there??

I think if u love that country , just go and live there!!

Btw , i fall in love when i was 19 .. So be happy !!

Mark asks…

Do you think it seems like my sister is my parent’s favorite child? How do I overcome feeling bad about this?

I am 21-years old and my sister is 16. I’m adopted, and my sister is my parents’ biological child-my parents didn’t think they could have kids, but then my sister was born. I guess I just have been feeling down about things-not to say that I’ve had a bad life, they supported me through college and through high school, but I just feel like my sister has gotten to do so much more. She is a very talented person, but they have invested so much money for her to take private lessons, and they never really did that for me. I graduated from college recently, and haven’t found a job in my field. Most parents would be happy to have their child home, but my mom doesn’t like it. Mostly because she likes having the house to herself. It’s just little things, like if I talk to my mom she acts annoyed, and sometimes I’ll try talking about my career goals, not be self-centered, but because I’m excited. I got into graduate school recently, and since I’ve been struggling to find stuff in my field I’m excited when I get an interview. My mom says that I act like the world revolves around me and all I talk about is myself. However I feel like my parents’ world revolves around my sister. My mom doesn’t work or anything, so the only time she leaves the house is to drive my sister places. And in fact whenever she does talk about anything it’s my sister, her accomplishments (she’s going to Spain this summer to perform), my sister’s grades, how she is sad my sister doesn’t have a boyfriend and blah blah. I love my sister, and I’m proud of her too, but the way my mom acts towards me is hurtful sometimes. My mom was glad when I moved out of the house to go to college and wants me to move out now. Even when I was away at college I’d call home and that’s all I’d hear about is my sister-that’s all my mom talks about to me. Whenever I do bring up graduate school she acts really annoyed and tells me how it’s a waste of time, and then just responds not everything is always about you. Also when I’m home she hardly talks to me, but as soon as my sister is home is she talks and talks and usually is it all about my sister and school, but of course I can never talk about me.

My Dad is pretty fair, he might do more stuff with my sister, but he doesn’t talk all about my sister when I talk to him. He talks about me too, but I do feel like him and my sister have a stronger bond.

Right now I sort of feel like a loser too because I moved back home after going away to college. I haven’t found anything in my field, but I did get accepted into a very good graduate program, and I’m currently working at the front desk at a hotel.

I have brought this stuff up before to my parents and they think that I’m just acting like a spoiled brat. They said that I act like my sister has gotten to do more than me, but it’s only because I was just so focused on my friends in high school. I did graduate in the top of my class, and graduated with honors in college. I don’t know for me, I think it’s clearly obvious that my sister is my mom’s favorite and of course when I accuse her of that she gets really mad. I do just want to move out and be on my own, since clearly that’s what my mom wants too, but it’s impossible right now since I don’t have the money for it.

Am I just being selfish? How do I overcome this?

Mikey answers:

First off sweetheart dont feel like it has any thing to do with you being adopted over a child thats biologically theirs. Its just not true. Maybe to them, secretly, that feel a closer bond BECAUSE she’s blood, but just think of all the money/time they spent to get you to be apart of their family. They love you, they care about you and your accomplishments, and you are important.
Second, no you arent being selfish. You want the same love and attention and affection that you see your sister getting. Its sibling rivalry and no matter how old you get you’re going to suffer with it. If your mom seems aggravated fine. Let her be that way. You want to include her in your success and joy and she dont want it…her loss. Go your seperate way. You may not be able to move out but you can grow and get the nurture you desire from others: yourself, friends, other close family, or even teachers/professors at school. Dont be an ass. If they speak, speak back. When you enter a room speak and say hey and go on about your business. Since they dont seem to care when you try to include them, wait till they ask. Otherwise, YOU DO YOU. That means you do whatever you have to do to make sure you’re happy and youre situated. So just focus on being the best person you can be and finding a good job. Save up a few checks…and BOUNCE. I know you appreciate all they’ve done, but dont let them bring you down with foolishness..
BTW, as a parent and even though i dont know you, im proud of you for all you’ve done. Not many people can say they’ve done the things you have.
Good luck on your job search!

Lisa asks…

I need to make £400 in a month. Help!?

My friend goes over to Spain every summer to work, and she has asked if I want to go with her for a month!

I am currently unemployed and have been for a few months now, and its becoming incredibly difficult to find a job where I live.

I’m only 19, so while I’m young and have no responsibilities I’d love to take up her offer, but I’m going to need atleast £400-£500.

Could anyone help me with any tips or ideas of how to raise this amount of money? Or what kind of things I could sell? I have just over 4 weeks to do so.

Thanks :)

Do some part time work. Maybe by teaching the children in your area. You can also walk dogs, maintain garden, and do other such small type of works to earn money. At the age of 19 you have several things to do and earn £400.

In summer I would like to improve my languages and computer….Do you think I can add in my cv english knowledge advanced??? Thanks for your answers!!!

Mikey answers:

I would except any job at the moment and be searching for a better one in the mean time. At least that way you will still be earning. If it is only temporary it is bearable.

How to find a summer set design job for a high school student?

During the summer I would like to work backstage at a set design type job. Without any direct connections how can I find a job like such preferably with some pay?

I am definitely not thinking of upscale set designs such as Broadway plays but maybe summer theater camps that need set work done. Do such summer jobs even exist? I hope.

I am interested in design, mostly interior. Any suggestions of interesting job or intern type of things I can do during the summer?

I am 15 years old and live outside of NYC.

Mikey answers:

If there is a community theater in your area, volunteer there. Or your local community college. You may not get paid, but if you do that this summer, you can put something on a resume and maybe get paid next summer.

Mandy asks…

How to found it? You mean FIND it? You are in high school and use this grammar?

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job College

Lizzie asks…

Laura asks…

Question for college students…about getting a job in your college town?

College students: If you live on campus at a university, how did you go finding another job in your college town? Was is easy to get a job, closer to college or did you have a problem finding another job. Do you have the same summer job that you had last summer?

I’m just wondering. I’m a student at a community college and planning on tranferring to a university.

Mikey answers:

I think it might depend on where you are going to college. I was in Washington DC so it was really easy to find a job. It might be more difficult in other places. It may also depend on what kind of job you want to have

Michael asks…

Discouraged college student can’t find a summer job.?

I have been applying for summer jobs in my area for the last 3 months I have gotten no replies. I am in Michigan, the metro Detroit area. I know our economy sucks but this is ridiculous. At first I was focusing on animal care types jobs, even pet stores, because I want to be a Veterinarian but I decided to broaden my search. I thought some of the jobs I applied for were guaranteed, like the metropark by my house, working in recreation or at the pool and even they have not responded. All that is left is fastfood which I really don’t want to do but they probably wouldn’t call me either. And I actually have job experience. I worked at a department store for around 1 1/2 years and I work at the library at school. Does anyone have some suggestions for me? It would be great if there were some Michigan specific suggestions. Thanks.
The reason I want a job so bad is so I can help pay for my schooling next year. My parents kind of need my input.

Mikey answers:

If you’re not in urgent need of the income, perhaps you can get more experience by volunteering. It looks good on your resume too.

Helen asks…

Finding summer work in another state after high school?

I am about to graduate high school and want to explore life a little bit before I go to college. I want to move to somewhere like New Mexico maybe, but I have almost no money. Are there any sites where I could find summer-long job listings for kids who are just getting out of high school, or other such opportunities?

Mikey answers:

Talk to your high school counselor. Ask about paid internships or perhaps opportunities in a National Park.

Joseph asks…

I’m having a difficult time finding a job this summer, Any suggestions?

I’m still attending college, I’m just on summer break. I think it’s actually preventing me from getting hired because they know I’ll only work this summer and quit. Right now I’m actually thinking of leaving “still attending college” off the resume.

Mikey answers:

I was in the same position as you so I went for the kind of jobs that need little training and that employers are desperate seeking people to hire asap

I am currently a food prep / dishwasher (lots of restaurants are desperately seeking dishwashers cuz no one wants to be one) making $15/hr with free food.

Check www.craigslist.com for available job openings. Good luck!

If all else fails … Dont tell them that you’re in college still. That’s what I did last year =P
