Sharon asks…

I have no friends in high school and feel pathetic, what am I supposed to do?

The actual school and grades isn’t a problem at all, I have mostly A‘s and B’s, so that’s not a concern. But…..it’s a long story, I’ll try to shorten it down.

Last summer my mom and I moved from New York, where I lived my whole life, to Texas so she (my mom) could get a job. We live with my aunt and uncle and their kids. So basically, I left everyone I’ve ever known to go live with family members I barely even know.

Now, the new high school I go to is really……”cliquey”. I don’t seem to “fit in” to any of these cliques. Everyone keeps to themselves here, and each person is indulged into their own group or clique. These people usually share interests, dress the same, ect. There are a lot of these at my school, usually the cliques consist of 4 or 5 people but sometimes like 8 or ten. I don’t have what I would honestly call ”friends” (as in; people whom I can relate with and share common interests with and such.) Since being in high school I have found it difficult to make friends. The people I know usually talk about dumb stuff and subjects I’m not that interested in, or they’ll never like, really talk to me but just bicker on and on about random silly stuff so it’s never a full conversation I have with them. Some of them physically hit me, and I understand that they’re joking, considering they end every sentence with “just playin’”, but that’s just not cool with me. Some people, who I don’t even know, verbally abuse me in the halls, for no reason. Like today, some random dude threw something at me and it hit the back of my knee. I just ignored it and kept walking to class. While I was walking into my next class, I heard him say, “I bet he liked that…” What the fuck does that even mean!?

I know stuff like this happens at EVERY high school, but I digress.

I guess I just feel totally and completely isolated from everyone. I haven’t hung out with someone in months, or gone to the mall or the movies, or basically done anything fun. I never even use my phone anymore, since I have no one to talk to.

Is anyone else experiencing what I am? I just don’t know what to do with myself. Even my mom is constantly telling me that I need to make friends and get out of the house, but she’ll never understand what I’m going through.

Sorry for the long read, by the way.

Mikey answers:

I switched high-schools too and hated it the first year, but then the next year it got better mainly because I tried a little more and stopped pouting. When it comes to Texas people take pride in where they live and if you look like you don’t want to be there they aren’t going to want you to be there either. Never underestimate the power of school pride when it comes to Texas because that is one thing that ties in all the cliques together.
The thing about highschool is that it really doesn’t matter, because in college you lose most of those connections anyway and make more real ones. But to help out with your current situation: I found friends through school clubs. It’s the easiest and least stressful way to connect with people I promise
The thing is you only need to make like a few friends to get you started. Just start a conversation with someone you’d think would respond back and mention that you are new.

Chris asks…

I need tips and advice on moving responsibly?

HI, I’m going to be 21 years old soon, and currently live in a bad situation. I have to move out by this next summer. Where would one move to that will only have 1,000 dollars to move, no credit established and has a very important dog in her life to her. My dog requires good care that I want to provide her with, and I will like to move somewhere that will be best suited for her and for myself. I will have a graphic Design Associates that I will like to also find a job in.

My brother lives in Brooklyn New York, which would probably be awesome if I could crash at his place until I find my own for my profession, but like I said my dog is very important to me, and I would cry knowing she is cooped in a small apartment all day. She is a active spaniel. I would really appreciate the advice, because I’m sooooooo confused and beating myself up with the the time slipping by.

Thanks!

Mikey answers:

Run some ads on craigs list looking for someone to room with you are going to first and last month rent and sometimes a deposit to move in a place on your own also most utility companies will also charge deposits i would crash with brother save up some more cash and then establish my home

Robert asks…

I would like to audition for a disney channel series but need to know how and where?

Where to start?

I’m in NC could you find any auditions in NC?

Later this summer I’m going back to New York any auditions you can find?

I know most likely I’d get cast in a 2013 series, but I need to know how to get an agent, where some auditions are, and anything else that is important for this type of job.

If you happen to know a site that has list of disney channel auditions all over the USA that would be quite helpful as long as it’s legit. Auditions for an Agency as well. Please do not say start off with commercilas because Zendaya from shake it up got on a series first. Thanks :)
thx but could’ve gone without the pedophile remark…
thx but could’ve gone without the pedophile remark…

Mikey answers:

Your best shot is to go to LA and hustle like all the other aspiring actresses. Or you can put yourself on YouTube and sell yourself that way. Either way, you have to do something that sets you apart from others. Disney channel is also full pedophiles so, I really don’t understand how you could aspire to work for such a deceitful brand. Good luck!

Ken asks…

how to get a record label?

i know its more than tough to get a record label to sign you. I have tried almost everything – I’ve made demo CDs and press kits and sent them all over the map but i havent heard anything back. I live in sort of a dead town with almost no way out. most people around here live here for their whole lives.

I cannot do that. i have big big goals that i need to accomplish. i want to be a singer. i write my own music and i honestly think i have something. the way i see it, the only way out of my town and into greener pastures is to spend a summer interning at a record label in new york. I have applied for multiple internships there and i think i have an OK shot at getting one. IF i do get the job, would that be an appropriate way to get my foot in the door? After i’ve been there a while, is it innapropriate to give my demo cd to the label, or ask to pay for some studio time?

i just really need to find my way in. (and in no way am i “dissing” my town; it’s just not the place i need to be right now)

Mikey answers:

Make a couple of videos, put them on you tube, email them to everyone you know and if you have truly awesome “one in a million” talent, and some luck, a label will notice you. However, if you have anything less than awesome talent, you will need to pay your dues like everyone else that got a deal and work hard at perfecting your craft. Interning at a label is a good idea, but it will take more than that. You will need to perform a lot at any club you can in order to develop a following. Recording with good people, having a good web presence with videos is important too. Interning will help you meet the right people, but competition is fierce out there and labels always favor the artist who is the complete package. What is that complete package? Solid radio ready songs, strong vocal, great look, seasoned performing skills, hard work ethic and a great attitude.

Mikey answers:

I make money online in my spare time using a site called CashCrate. It is a GPT (Get Paid To) site where you get paid to fill out surveys and complete free offers. You dont need a credit card and will never have to spend a dime. CashCrate is the most reliable and safest GPT site you will find on the internet. You wont get rich from cashcrate but you can earn about $50-$200/month on average. Below is the URL to my blog dedicated to cashcrate. In it is everything you need to know to get started as well as Proof that CashCrate Pays. If you are interested please check it out.

Daniel asks…

Where can I find a summer job in Roseville, California?

I’m 18 and I’m looking for a summer job in or near Roseville, CA before heading away for college. Where are some places you suggest I look into and/or apply? I was thinking Sunsplash but everyone probably applies there and it might be too late. Thanks for the help!

Mikey answers:

Try this: http://www.bunnyranch.com

Lizzie asks…

How can I find a summer/saturday job?

I’ve been looking for a saturday or summer job for a few months now and I’ve applied to lots of places. I’m finding it really hard to get a job but I really want and need one. Am I going wrong somewhere? Any advice?
I’m 16 if that helps any.

Mikey answers:

How old are you? It’ll be even harder if you are under 18! EDIT: 16 is still hard to get work(i’d know) at a good paying job. You’d get hired fast food pretty quick though. Maybe Cold Stone or Dunkin Donuts?

Finding a job can be luck sometimes. It has to do with whether there are any open spots at the places you are applying, if there are any new places opening in your area, or if you know someone who works there.

If the places you are applying just don’t want to hire, it’s not your fault or anything. I applied somewhere yesterday afternoon and got a call today in the morning! Other places that I applied three weeks ago still haven’t called yet! The place that called today is opening soon, so they need all the help they can get. If they want to open by a specific date, they’ll probably hire anyone who speaks English.

And make sure you always call and ask about your applications at places you really want to work at. Wait one week before calling. Ask to speak to hiring manager. But sometimes they’ll say “we’ll take a look at your application”. It’s a lie!!

Good luck!
Try craigslist.com, go to your city

Michael asks…

Where can teachers find summer jobs?

I am a special education teacher but am looking for a job over the summer. I would be interested in teaching, tutoring, or even babysitting. I have already tried Craig List, but would like some other ideas. I would mainly like to stay in the Jersey/Pa/Delaware area. Thanks in advance for your ideas!

Mikey answers:

Nurseries that are open all year may need ad hoc staff or staff during the holidays. Also you could try contacting youth clubs? Find their contact details and write to them or give them a call.

Ken asks…

how can i find a summer job for a teenager?

I live in Raymore, MO and I just turned 17 in March.
I would like a job just for in the summer that is for teenagers.
I don’t want to work at a grocery store, or restaurant. I would like to work somewhere fun.

I was thinking about volunteering at a daycare, but I need babysitting classes first. Would anybody know where I could take those at?

If not, then any suggestions of a fun work place would be appreciated. Thanks!

Mikey answers:

Your babysiting classes are available at the YMCA or the Red Cross, or most local fire departments will have the red cross come in once a month or so and you can take them there.
Also maybe try going to www.petfinder.com and hit every single animal shelter or rescue group in your area. I did that. I ended up working with the nuttiest woman who ran the most AMAZING animal rescue group. I think this woman was the original Cat Lady. I did all kinds of things from grooming and walking to outreach events where I would sit at a table and talk to people about pet adoption.
If you drive, try Meals on Wheels, or you can go to their location and cook or help put them together for transport.
I just hired a Mothers Helper for te summer. Her job is to do anything and everything she can to make my life easier this summer. She cooks if I need it, cleans, plays with my son….sometimes I am working from my home office so I really need her to file or type. Last week she walked my dog and did my grocery shopping. My husband pays her pretty good because she is indepensable. Try posting an ad for a mothers helper. You wont get bored!

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job In New York

Sandy asks…

What is a current business issue in America?

I am applying to a Summer Program in which they are asking me to write an essay addressing the following – “Paste an article about a current business issue. Indicate why you consider it important and what you suggest should be done to change it.”

The question seems so vague to me and I’m having trouble finding an article on a specific business issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ive look on CNN , Businessweek, The New York Times, etc…

My mind automatically goes to unemployement and American jobs being outsourced.

Mikey answers:

Modern business and nineteenth century philosophy would seem, on the surface, to have very little in common. However, the increasing complexities of business, in the face of technological advances and globalization, provide a clear indication that they should be considered together as a whole.
Ethics is an everyday occurrence in the corporate world as well as one’s personal life. Business ethics is the same as normal ethics. In both cases, ethics is knowing what is right or wrong, and/or learning what is right or wrong in the environment in which one is involved.
An ethical issue may not have a concrete answer; therefore a person’s decision may depend on that person’s situation. This may happen because “ethics is a broad and murky area and the workplace is full of ethical dilemmas and issues

Charles asks…

I want to become a graphic designer in the near future. What should I do?

I’m 16-years-old and I’m going to become a junior in Edward R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn, New York this year. I want to become a graphic designer and I want to find out how to become one in the near future… so it would be my job for life.

I need to know where should I register my name and who should I talk to about this. I also need to know what good colleges/institutes/universities in New York teach graphic designing and would test me for my ability. And I need to know what courses/subjects are necessary to be with a good grade in order to achieve something that will open the door for me to have the opportunity of being in the designer’s crew.

Anyway, just tell me what to do cause I really hate just wasting my summer doing nothing. I’d really appriciate it and give you 10 points for it. Thank You!

Mikey answers:

The most important things for a graphic designer are A. An eye for what looks good and B. Knowledge of the tools (software). I am a graphic designer, and I could not survive without knowing: Illustrator, InDesign, PhotoShop and Quark, but I also know Visio, FrontPage, Dreamweaver and other applications that help me do my job. It’s important to understand color theory (the difference between spot color (e.g., Pantone colors) and process color (CMYK or RGB)). It’s also VERY important to know how to prepare your files for a print vendor. You can’t just send a file, you need to bundle up all the fonts and graphics used as well.

What you’ll need to do is start building a portfolio so that you can SHOW people what you can do. Invitation, brochures, ads, etc. Are important pieces to include.

It’s a plus if you can also work with web designers to provide their graphic pieces, or design websites yourself.

The finest art schools (in my opinion) would be the Rhode Island School of Design, or Parsons. You can get a graphics degree at most institutions, however, and big name schools don’t necessarily mean anything in this field. I majored in Biology at Smith and have an M.A. In science education from Columbia, so all my graphics skills were learned on the fly and in specific training courses. I’ve been in the biz for almost 10 years.

Good luck!

Sharon asks…

Better states to get ahead then others?

Im from New York, and will be getting my associates degree this summer. I know that some states requirements for schooling are less then others. Does this mean having a degree from a school in NY, would look better than an associates degree from Florida, or some other state? Would it be easier for me to find a job in a state with lower requirements then it would be in NY where there is a lot of competition?

Mikey answers:

Yes. Your chance of getting a great job in North Dakota is much higher than NY. You pay a price for that job with horrible weather (but wonderful neighbors).

Wall Street Journal says ND has the best jobs and the most jobs per capita in the nation.

Mary asks…

Should i quit my current job to find another?

Hi everyone!
I’m kind of confused and disappointed. Last summer i got my Master Degree. Sent like 10-15 resumes every day, had some interviews, but no luck. In december i was offered a bookkeeping job in a small company, and i agreed just because there was no any offers for me and i had to pay my bills, rent and everything. The salary is just 350$ weekly and full-time employment. For New York it’s not really enough.
Now i started to look for another job again. And already had some interviews, but it was really difficult and stressful… because i have to ask a permission to leave earlier, or come later… i just can’t do it every time… and also it’s hard to answer calls about my interview inside the office… so i receive voice mails and call them back from somewhere else during the work time. It makes me very nervous:(
I’m thinking about quit this job to make my search more productive and comfortable. Otherwise i will never find a job… but in the same time it is not really easy to find ANY JOB right now. I just don’t wanna stock without anything… and start looking for at least something after one month staying at home.
So… what do you think i should do? Is there any other ways to search?

Mikey answers:

It’s always best to quit a job only AFTER you find a new job.

Charles asks…

I’m planning to getaway , what do i need?

In my situation , i should run away just to give my self some time alone. Obviously i’m to young to run away and i probably won’t even have enough money to run away some place so that’s why i’m going to wait like a year or two. I just need a plan. Money , of course , transportation , food , etc…
I know i need to get a job , save up about 600 dollars. I could save even more money to buy a car but Thad take forever. I’m trying to be rebellious before i turn 18. i’ll probably just take a friend who has their license or whatever. I live in Maryland and all i need is a place to run away too. Florida? nah, i go their every summer. New York , just went . same with ocean city and Myrtle beach. I guess i can’t go anywhere to extreme… so help me find a place along the east coast that’s perfect to go to?
Ps : I would tell at least my older sister that i’m running away.

Mikey answers:

Well i have the same problem but what you need is some canned food, water, clothes, money, maybe a weapon like brass knuckles or a knife cuz you never know what is going to happen , sleeping bag, fake id,and your best friend (if you trust him). This is what i need for when i go to mexico or vegas.

James asks…

Fluent speakers–can someone translate these into Spanish for me please?

I have to have a conversation in front of the Spanish class today, and I want a base to start out my topics so I don’t freeze up. Would someone pleaseplease translate these for me so I have an idea of how to start my oral? I’m terrified of public speaking. Thank you so much!!

1. The economy is the worst I’ve ever seen. I know it was worse during the Great Depression, but I never imagined it could get this bad. I have considered moving to a big city to find a job because this job pays so little and I’m having trouble finding a new one. All of my credit card bills are past due, and I can’t seem to pay off my debts. I had to take out a loan against my house in order to pay for my son’s college tuition. I don’t know how I will ever pay it back with my current salary. If I had known before how bad the economy would get, I would have made investments and figured out how to save more money. Now, it seems hopeless.

2. The best spring vacation is traveling to New York City. My mother and I go every year to see the newest fashions and shop for summer clothes. New York is beautiful in the spring because there are so many people in the parks and on the streets enjoying the weather. The street vendors are out selling hot dogs, and there are festivals in the parks. My favorite part about going on vacation in New York is the musicals. This year, my mother lost her job, so we can’t afford to see as many shows at the theater. If I had known earlier, I would have started saving. Anyway, we’ll have lots of fun this year.

3. Technology is developing so quickly. Every day, I’m amazed by the new advances. I can only imagine what it will be like in the future. The computers are already so advanced, but I think that soon all computers will have screens you can touch instead of keyboards. Also, I’m sure that new technology will emerge soon that makes even laptops much more portable. This will be great especially for me because I’m a reporter, and I take my laptop everywhere. If the computer is very tiny and light, it won’t put so much strain on my back. I also think that cars will stop running on gasoline soon. This will greatly reduce carbon emissions and save the planet. If people had known a long time ago what damage cars do to the earth, they would have started developing technology much sooner, I think. I love new technological developments because as a reporter, my life is all about efficiency.
I know it’s kind of heavy, but if you’re fluent it should only take a minute–I would be SO!! thankful. Please? Someone?

Mikey answers:

Richard asks…

What should I say to my Rich Brother who calls me lazy because I can’t keep a full time job?

Because I have a problem with depression.
I’m taking whatever medicine my psychiatrist prescribes.
But it only helps solve 40% of the depression problem.

My rich brother became rich because he married a girl from a rich family who works in real estate.
His wife’s family owns buildings (I don’t know how many) in the New York City area.

My ???ambitious??? brother comes into work at 11:30 in the morning and usually leaves early at around 2:30 pm when he has to go to the bank to deposit the money that came in that day from people who rent space or apartments in buildings his wife’s family owns or manages.

And then he goes home for the rest of the day.

During the summer he leaves for his summer vacation home in Upstate New York Thursday afternoon at 3:00 pm
And comes back at 1:00 pm the following Monday afternoon

And for the last 2 weeks of August he goes on a fancy Vacation trip somewhere
In December Christmas time he goes for another 2 week fancy vacation.

I once asked him if he would ever help me financially or help me find a good job and he said No.

My brother doesn’t seem to have the energy to help me. But he has enough energy to criticize me for being depressed.

Mikey answers:

Your brother is not worth wasting your time on-dont rely on him to help you, help yourself. Get a job yourself. Go to a support group/therapist, learn coping mechanisms to deal with the depression. Get a hobby, keep busy.

Your Questions About Free Advice On Starting Your Own Business

Charles asks…

I need some career advice please?! ?

***FIRST THINGS FIRST***
***I appologize a million times for the length of this post and I thank you a million times in advance for reading it all and helping me out!***

Hi, May 2007 I finished my first year at the university and was hired at the advertising agency that my Aunt owns. I was only going to work there for the summer until the next semester. Time flew by and I missed cut off dates for registration etc so I decided to work until the spring semester.

So basically my work consisted of proofing and editing script for ads and running to the bank to make deposits.

My Aunt owns not only the advertising agency but several franchises that are pretty much retail. The centers are 3 states with at least 3 centers or more in each state.

Because of the growth of opening more centers I became more involved with that particular business and I started having no advertising related work and started having more accounting work since the accountant was in need of more assistance.

I had every intention of going back to school but I found that I kind of have a knack for and have worked out very well in the accounting department.

Now it is November 08 a year and a half later and im still there and am now the full time accounts payable clerk. I had every intention and still have a yearning to go back to school but I really like the people and the work that I do and its nice to be around my aunt and my mother everyday so I am kind of caught in between going back to school for what was my dream or staying put and taking online classes in accounting to further my potential.

One of the main reasons I do not want to be here is because I feel that people look at me and think: “you only have that job because you are related to the owner” when really my boss is the accountant not my aunt…[although she OWNS the place]

The other big reason i dont want to be there is beacuse I wanted to go to school for the occupation that I believed was my calling since i was very very young.

So do you think it looks tacky and like I am “using” my aunt for a “free ride” kind of life? I mean I DO earn my paycheck…

So what are some of your reccomendations? Do I quit and go back to school? [tuition isnt an issue] Do I keep my job? for only being there a year the accountant is very complimentary of me and has raised my initial pay from my starting pay a dramatic increase. I really just dont know what to do. ON one hand I really want to stay cuz i love the people and i like what im doing but on the other i still have this piece of my heart that craves to go back to school and fulfill my “dream” I mean…someone told me that I already found my dream career i just didnt know it yet…

Thanks A TOOOON and again I appologize for the length!

Mikey answers:

I didn’t see what you said your original “dream” was but if you are REALLY and TRULY happy, I wouldn’t give it up. It sounds like a great opportunity with that many stores. I think the only draw back would be not having a degree (not sure what your degree was going to be in) but that may come back to haunt you later down the road. It did for my husband who quit college to work full time for a great company and a few years later new hires with degrees were getting paid more than him with his tenure and no degree. Just something to consider.

Daniel asks…

What am i entitled to?

Basically…My friend and I opened a children’s clothing store in November 2009. We were both given $2000AU by our partners to give us a start. There was no loan involved as we did not meet the criteria.
Over the months of opening I then contributed just over $5000AU of my own money and my friend only just over $1000AU.

The business wasn’t really busy to generate any income. The figures roughly were – Nov 2009 to end Dec 2010 expenses $8000 and income about $1500. Then Jan 2010 to March 19th 2010 expenses about $5000 and income about $1500. I did the maths of what supplies we needed to get in and a budget for the shop and estimated we needed to earn about $1000 per week to survive and move forward.

After running out of my own cash flow and realising the business was going nowhere i decided it was time to pack up and leave. I approached my friend/business partner and explained all this and said we need to sell up and leave now or we will go into massive debt by placing large stock orders that i didn’t think would sell given the business history. She said she wanted to stay and would buy my share out.
She then decided that she would need to go bankrupt because of her personal loans she had taken out and never repaid and she wanted to put business in her defactos name.

I signed over the shop name thinking it was all good and she would pay me some entitlements.
He has then turned around saying they owe me nothing, its his shop and i get nothing.

Now all i have signed over is the business name. My name is actually still on the property lease and no contract was signed regarding the stock in the shop. All the goods were purchased under my joint ABN with ex-freind business partner.

I never expected all the money i put in back , just the difference of what we both contributed. If we both left when i said we could have sold up and recovered some of the losses.

If my name and ABN are still on the lease and i have proof i purchased goods could i walk in there and take stock?
Whats your advice, feel free to ask for more information. I know im silly for having no contract drawn up in the first place and for going into business with a friend so you dont need to tell me that.

Thanks

Mikey answers:

I doubt you will get a correct answer on Y/A. My suggestion is to contact a lawyer ASAP.

I don’t know the laws of Australia where you state is from your posting, but can see some legal issues that could come about you signing over documents and not knowing the legal ramifications that this could cause now or possibly in the future. The 1st being that your partner is going to file bankruptcy on a business that both of you own. I don’t know about your laws, but in the US in a divorce that both spouses take on a debt and in the divorce each are granted certain debts to keep and pay, but what happens is that 1 spouse does not pay, so the company goes after the other spouse to collect even though the divorce says otherwise and many times the other spouse ends up filling bankruptcy due to the other spouse not paying. You still have your name on the lease and other factors that could crop up that you have no clue until something could happen.

Regardless of the out of pocket losses you incurred and left, I see that you need legal advice.

Good luck

web hosting/e-commerce?

Even an old man like Myself can see that e-commercce is the future, and while I consider My self to be fairly comfortable with using th einternet and computers, I am a long way from being an expert on building web sites, and setting up e-commerce accounts. So I have some questions I would like to understand better before I proceed with establsihing My own web business

I am going to have to start with some kind of a “welcome page” which I am pretty sure I can handle.

But from there I want to split between a “free tour” and a “members login”page.
The free tour is probably nothing more than linking other web pages which are no more complicated than the welcome page??? But the members sign in page, how would I go about setting that up???

I am also going to what some way of billing My customers for their montlhy memberships and for on line purchases, which I am guessing would invovle something like pay pals and a link to an e-commerce capable bank account which I think I have with washington mutual.

I want the ability to up load videos and music for viewing and sale.

And I am going to want an on line catolog of merchandise related to My business.
I am also going to want some kind of members only chat room.

And I want to have some kind of live auction capability.

I am going to bet that there are other things I am going to need to know that I amnot even aware of yet, and I am hoping that with this e-mail I can get started and then as I have other questions and problems I will be able to seek guidence and advice from ????

Thank You for your Assistance.

Mikey answers:

You have a tall order to fill, my friend. So slow down! This kind of business takes an expert in not only web design, but in PHP, MySQL, and CSS. And that is just to start. You dont want to be making every page by hand. By using these, you will be able to make the site interactive and dynamic. If you cant do this or dont know what Im talking about, you need to consult an expert to either teach you or do it for you. I dont know how to do a chat room…but you will need a good databaser to have any sort of login page, a place to store all those customer’s information, a way to charge them monthly automatically, unless they pay per product they view…
You will need to get a merchant account, usually through your bank, and set up a shopping cart on your site, after people login, to put their credit card info in. You need to capture that info (Databasing again) to incur recurring monthly charges.

It is a lot of info, but really, it isnt THAT hard if you already have the products you want to sell. You just need a good databaser/programmer.

David asks…

Let’s see if we can get some agreement: planning for retirement in America.?

I want to see if we can at least get agreement on some basic retirement planning advice. I’m going to list some basic guidelines for retirement planning and see if we can at least get some agreement on this.

Rules on planning for retirement

1. Learn to get by with less: If you’re the sort of person who is addicted to Big Box store sales and going out to eat at all those mid-level chain restaurants; always having the latest cell-phone; picking up on that new Internet subscription service, etc. then you’ll never be able to retire. If you ever expect to have anything in this economy you have to come to the realization that the majority of goods and services available to consumers nowadays are pathetic garbage that really wouldn’t be worth having even if they were offered to you for free. Save your money. Buy second-hand or vintage goods wherever possible. Aside from your food, underwear, t-shirts and socks there is really very little that you have to buy new.

2. Get an education: the differential in income levels between those with and without a college education is growing. High-school graduates in this country typically earn less than $12 an hour (2011 dollars) for most of their lifetime, and many reach retirement age with nothing more than Social Security checks to retire on.

3. Compare interest rates: many Americans get caught in the trap of putting money into retirement accounts when they have outstanding debt at interest rates higher than they’re earning in their retirement accounts. Paying off high interest debt is better for you in the long run than putting money into low-interest investment accounts.

4. Plan on retiring – sort of: few Americans will ever be able to retire completely. With many American main-streets being loaded with empty store-fronts many retirees may want to look into starting small businesses: such as small independent specialty shops to help them maintain some sort of income. Your business doesn’t have to be in its own storefront. Develop a business plan that will leverage the professional skills you’ve built up over your lifetime and plan on having a second career as a freelancer well into your retirement years.

That’s just four basic guidelines. Can we all at least agree on these guidelines?
Where are the conservative comments? I get three inane comments from three useless jack-wads and where are the rest of you? Taking notes?

Linda asks…

what is a good website for web design?

I am interested in web design, possibly wanting to start a business web site in the future. So, I want to know what is a good web site that will give advice and tutorial on how to start a website, the basics of html and the necessity of a blog website. I know I said I might possibly open a business website but I want to start off at a beginner’s level in blog website. To even open your own website is it free in terms of blog or business?

Mikey answers:

Can’t see that a blog will do anything for you in the way of web design. W3Schools is an excellent reference. There are thousands of web sites that will give you tutorials on XHTML, HTML, CSS, PHP, ASP or more. Just google for HTML tutorials and go from there. No need to buy software, you can use Notepad or free EditPad. Once you get to understanding HTML, get the free HTML-Kit. Once you feel comfortable with HTML, move on to XHTML and CSS. By all means don’t get an editing program that creates junk code which you will never be able to figure out how the coding works and how you can make it better. This comment directed at FrontPage and its successor.

What will be expected of you before you start? A knowledge of graphical composition foremost. A knack for color combinations, a grounded understand of good English, grammar and writing skills. And, the ability to logically solve problems with a keen eye for detail. Lastly, a successful business requires having something that people want or what good is the business?

Your Questions About New Marketing Methods

Michael asks…

Why is there a new trend in psychology to consider Eastern methods?

Is this complete BS, I’m trying to wrap my head around it. Is it a form of marketing expansion? Why? That’s a like a medical doctor recommending acupuncture to cure a tumor? What gives?
It often works my ass, there is no empirical basis for it. Multicultural, please.
Great Cavassi, so you are part of the problem and not the solution. What a douche
CBT is purely Western. You obviously know nothing about Dr. Beck. He did not spend his you meditating under a tree.

Mikey answers:

As our society becomes more multi cultural, other forms of healing are introduced. Western methods are no better than others, just different. It’s not a bad idea to try many approaches as different things work for different people.

It’s not BS. It’s just different.

Sharon asks…

Marketing a new business. Both online and offline.?

What are the best tried and tested methods. I have heard of Google Ad-words and using Keywords on the website itself to get it higher in the results. I will use google analytics and such.
I am just wanting to know, In your experience what is your top tried and tested method for marketing.
Online and offline?
I will be wholesaling household goods
Clearance End of lines and such.By the pallet.

Mikey answers:

I market Online and i think the best way to market is by doing a campaign of everything. Pay per Click, Social networking site, Social Bookmarking, Google SEO, Forums, Article marketing, You tube marketing.

Steven asks…

I have a new MLM biz I am promoting. What are the best methods of getting downlines free and fast?

This MLM/Network Marketing biz is the simplest I have seen and it has a lot of freebies one can enjoy. I discovered that getting people to join is very difficult. Please advise me on how to get downlines for my business.

Mikey answers:

It’s hard to get a downline because more and more people see it for what it really is… A money pit. 99% of people who join MLM LOSE money. People in MLMs that try to recruit you are often lying about their income.

William asks…

What are the best methods of getting new immigrants to be pro-active in terms of voting in the United States?

Candidates communicating in the immigrants native languages, marketing through their media outlets, relating to their issues, conducting surveys, etc….

Mikey answers:

Don’t vote Republican, and allow them to screw the Latino people anymore. That’s all the Latinos need to know, since the Republicans have been letting them know publicly, how they really feel about them. Latinos vote the republicans out and free America.

Susan asks…

Your Questions About Advice On Starting Your Own Business

Donna asks…

Have your own business? PLEASE help. I am needing advice on getting started marketing my own product~?

I produce my own merchandise and have it in local stores. However, I am wanting to get it in a corporate store on a much larger level.Or start my own store.
What should I do to get an investor? Where do I begin to look for one?
I do not have good credit- can I still qualify for a small business loan? Or should I even consider a loan?
I do not have any business background and I am getting discouraged so any advice or a point in the right direction would help. Thanks so much!

Mikey answers:

Your local library may offer free business consultations or have books on business and marketing that could break it down for you. My local library uses SCORE counselors. They’re a nonprofit organization that offers free advice to small business owners from other business owners and they can even set you up with a mentor. SCORE has a website that claims to offer free advice online so you may want to visit their website and see if they have any advice for you.

Thomas asks…

I want to start my own business at home doing Payroll/Accounts Payable/Receivable. I have years of experience in this field of work and I have months looking for work and still no luck. I decided to look into doing my own business from home, I just don’t know exactly how to go about getting started and getting clients. Does anyone have any good advice on how you got your business started and made it productive.

Mikey answers:

Go to http://www.score.org/mentors and enter your zip code. On the next screen, you will get information on the nearest SCORE chapter. Call them and arrange for a free meeting with a volunteer SCORE mentor. They will guide you through the process.

SCORE is a nonprofit association dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide and is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).

SCORE has 350 chapters in locations throughout the United States and its territories, with 13,000 volunteers nationwide. Both working and retired executives and business owners donate time and expertise as business mentors.

Steven asks…

Retail Business, Where can you find the best information on starting your own retail Business?

I have an idea for a retail fashion business and would like to find out how i should go about it.

Could anyone recommend any

Websites
Books
Tips

and if you have set up you own retail business what would you say was the best source of information and/or advice?

Thank you x

Mikey answers:

No website or book is going to tell you everything you need to know

The first thing you need to do is write a business plan, and by doing that you will have identified everything you need to know, and need to find out about

1, you need to know if your product(s’ are sellable and competitively priced
2. You need to find affordable premises
3. Will you need to employ staff
4. How will you buy the stock and all the fixtures and fittings
5. Other overheads include electricity, insurance, marketing and advertising, phone line, petrol/diesel, vehicles

The list is personal to you, and only you know, what you need to do

Ruth asks…

Can anyone suggest an internet course on how to start your own business?

I wanna start my own business a bookstore but no one in my family or circle of friends has ever done that so I have no one to turn to for advice. Can anyone please suggest good internet courses for starting your own business??

Mikey answers:

Alittle info: Basically you have to have money to make money. I know from experience because I was going to start a Salon Business. You have to have about 50% of the business cost coming from your own pocket and the other 50 through loans or grants. I was told the bank will not loan you 100% to start a business. If you do go with the loan and not the grant you have to present your idea in front of a loan officer. They then decide if your business will be successful enough for them to loan you the money. Also rent on most buildings are normally $5,000 plus and you have to make sure you have profit to pay that rent. You also have to think about competition like Books A Million or Barnes and Nobles. The question is why would people decide to come to your store vs. Barnes and Nobles or Book a Million. You also need colateral in case your business fails the bank can start taking your belongs like your car or house. Its very risky to own a business and especially in this economy. I actually started a cleaning business b/c I don’t have to worry about rent since I use my car. I do my job and get paid. I guess it depends on what business you want to start and talk to someone that has a similar business to see if their succeeding.

William asks…

Does anyone own a cleaning service and can give advice on how to start my own cleaning business?

First of all to the 1st answer, the guy that gave me that dumb answer…get a life jerk!! I am too classy to entertain B.S. but anyways I want legitamite answer not dumb ones THANKS!

I want to start my own business and work for myself not work as a maid under other people…I want to have a cleaning service that cleans companies and stuff if possible I know they have some companies like that around here……
thanks though (to the 2nd answer)

Mikey answers:

How To Be Successful At The Trade Show

You are going to be participating in a trade show, and now you just need to know everything you need to be successful. At first, this might seem overwhelming; but actuall, it’s all quite simple. All you need is the knowledge of the fundamental element of trade show success.

What is this one thing anyone needs to know in order to be successful at a trade show? It is quite simple, really: In a trade show, no matter what you are selling, you are actually selling YOU. That’s right – you’re selling yourself, so it is important that you know exactly how to do this.

Selling yourself begins even before you show up at the trade show. You have to make sure that you are feeling confident, and you have to also make sure you are dressed in such a manner that others will feel confident in you. Don’t look sloppy, or people will assume that your business is sloppy. Make sure you will make the impression you want to make; double-check everything!

Remember when you arrive at the trade show that people need to buy you before they will buy your product. Remember that everyone is someone, whether they seem important or not. Keep that smile on your face at all times, look approachable, and look like you want to talk. You never know where that next big client or customer will come from, so treat every single person as though they might be the one.

When you are talking to people, make sure you remain engaged. Continue to smile while you talk to them, and make eye contact that shows you care about them, their needs, and anything they are saying. Bring the conversation to topics of common ground. People always feel more comfortable in territory they know, so lead the conversation to common points of interest.

Finally, remember that – to the eyes of those at the trade show, those with whom you interact – you represent the entire company. If you treat the people you speak with in a manner that coincides with this train of thought, you will surely be on your way to success.

Although the trade show might seem daunting, all you have to do is remember that it is actually all about the people, and that to the people it is all about you. Give them something that makes them feel comfortable with and confident in you, and they will feel comfortable with and confident in your business.
