David asks…

TEENS: PLEASE HELP! BEST ANSWER 10 POINT! I I WILL PICK SOON! HELP FINDING SUMMER JOB!?

I don’t want to sound like a brat or anything. But I really want a summer job for next year. I am 15 and I will be 16 by next summer. I really wanna get to handle my own money, learn responsibility, etc. I just have a problem. I would NOT be a good babysitter, I’m not good with kids, and I’m not good at taking care of kids (plus I’ve had a fear of babysitting since I saw When A Stranger Calls)….I’m not good for outdoor labor, like lawn mowing/outdoor care. I’m not really fast enough to be a cashier. I hate to sound so lazy, but the only thing I’d be good at is secretary-like jobs. Please don’t ask me to try these other things, I have in other ways, and im SIMPLY not cut out for babysitting/lawn mowing/etc. Right now I volunteer at the library, and I have to do stuff that involves writing info, alphabetizing, picking out books….its very low key work. Calm, low key, low energy type job…I would work @ library, but you have to be 18 where I am. I know they don’t give out full scale secretary jobs to teens, but is there any titles/jobs like that, that I could find?? Thanks!

Mikey answers:

Well, you’re screwed.

John asks…

Does anyone know a good place to find summer job openings in south Orange County?

I have looked at the career center at my school and the choices are very limited (mostly internships, tedious jobs that no one wants like janitor, etc). Also, I have looked at summerjobopenings.com, indeed.com, etc and have found that most jobs either require you to have work experience (of which I have none) or to be 18 years or older (I’m 15).
I’d be willing to do most jobs, really, as long it pays alright, is in an air-conditioned area, is not tedious and extremely boring (extremely, I could deal with a semi-boring job), and is past 10 o’clock in the morning. I do not mind working late.

Any advice?
First answerer: It says no job results under my location..

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job In New York

Mandy asks…

How to prepare to move to NYC for college?

I am planning to move to New York in the summer of 2012, for college. I know for a fact that it will not be easy to live there, and that my plans may fail altogether, but I’m pretty determined and nothing anyone says is going to stop me from going ahead with my plan.

What I would like to know is, how can I start to prepare to move there now, with about a year and 3 months before I move, at age 16 (I won’t be 18 until well into my first year of college)?

I know that I will most definitely need to have a good amount of money, ready to use for renting an apartment and food and such.
But what other things should I know or keep in mind about moving there? Like safety concerns, transportation alternatives, advice, issues I may face (legal or otherwise and what I can do about them), finding a decent job, and etc.

And anything I can do or start doing NOW, 15 months ahead of time, please let me know. The way I think of it, is there is never too much time to start planning so things can go as smoothly as possible (I don’t believe in perfection–I know some things won’t go as planned no matter what I do.)

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!!!! :D

Thomas asks…

Can McDonald’s check my previous job history even though I didn’t disclose it?

I’m 17. I got hired by McDonald’s. When my manager was interviewing me, she asked whether I had any previous job experience or not. I replied “no,” because although I had some previous job experience doing clerical work, I had no experience in fast food businesses. My very first job was in the New York City Summer Youth Program (government-funded). Would she be able to run a background check on me and find out that I have worked before? If she does, can I lose my job for dishonesty?

There is no database in the US that collect that type of information, your safe.

Michael asks…

Looking for my first job?

I’m 17, turning 18 in august. I live in New York City and I’m finishing high school in in late June. I want to find a summer job (which would also be my first job) but I don’t have a really clear picture of what I want to do. I’m applying to summer day camps as a counselor, and a few retail stores around my neighborhood like CVS, but I don’t what else is really out there. I’ve always been a good writer and scholarly student who loves physical activities, but I’m also shy from what people tell me (which I’m slowly growing out of whether I like it or not). I’ll also be attending college in september and don’t know how much a job would affect my time studying. Advice anyone?
I’ll also be staying home for college but commuting to Manhattan daily…

Mikey answers:

Hours can always change when you start college, until then 2 or 3 days a week is pretty standard part time work. Keep an eye open for new shops or shops that are about to open. Its very important that you apply for a first job as something you can stick at, even if you might not enjoy it. The first job people see on my CV i worked for about a month because i couldn’t stand the place, im always asked about it and i do have a suspicion it prevent people from hiring me.

Paul asks…

please read my autobiography for class?

I know it’s long, but could you please look over my grammar, punctuation, spelling, etc? and any suggestions are welcome. I am titling this “story of my life” and it is for my 8th grade ELA class. We are supposed to have a grabbing beginning, but i can’t think of one. I edited some names for this for privacy reasons.

I was born in South Korea and lived there until I was two years old. Then, me, my mother, father, and two sisters [Jessica] and [Hannah] moved to Virginia. We lived in Yorktown, Virginia for seven years and in the sixth year, my brother Danny was born. We moved to Long Island, New York the summer of my brother’s first birthday, and we lived in New York for three years. I entered [middle school name] in fifth grade, and there, I joined the chorus, which allowed me to audition for a big chorus in a music festival for the whole [County name]. I was one of four fifth graders at that school to be able to sing for the music festival. I made it again in sixth grade, and it was a wonderful experience for me.
Going to that particular school, really influenced me to be a better person. The people I met at that school were so ambitious, had big dreams, tried hard in school, and joined as many clubs as possible. The people that spoke at out school also influenced me a lot in my perspective on things. Sixth grade year, the father of Ryan Halligan came to our school to give us a speech about bullying, because his son, Ryan, was bullied to the point where he thought suicide was the only way out. Later on in the year, a Holocaust survivor came to our school to talk about his story and why history is so important. They were both very inspiring and I don’t think I’ll ever forget their speeches.
The summer between sixth and seventh grade, me and my family moved here, [city in california, not posting here]. We drove for nine days in the heat, stopping for national parks and seeing amazing sights. It was horrible riding in a car for hours on day, and eating fast food for a week straight didn’t make me feel any better about it. Although, looking back, I’m glad I was able to go so many places, and going from state to state was rather interesting. I hope to travel like this again, except to different countries instead of states.
Today, I am a girl who wishes people could be more compassionate towards one another. I don’t like talking about people in a bad way, and I’m not comfortable gossiping about my friends. I do try to be nice to everyone, but there will always be people who won’t like me, and vice versa. I like to sing, act, draw, read, bake, and try new things. My grades are pretty good, and I make an effort, even though I have a bad habit of procrastinating, which I don’t learn from because I always seem to get everything done, anyways. I would like to change that about me, though. Time managing is a big issue with me.
As a pastime, my family likes to go camping, swimming, or just watch a movie together. I like going shopping with my oldest sister, [Jessica], who is a freshman in college. I am not too close with my other sister, [Hannah], a junior in highschool, but my five year old brother always lifts me up when I am upset. In the future, I would like to have a small family of my own. As for my future career, I am open to suggestions and I haven’t really thought about what I want to be when I am older. I would like to inspire people in some way and maybe go into psychology, but I still do not know my “dream job” yet, but I hope to find it soon.

THE END

Mikey answers:

VERY GOOD!!
The summer between sixth and seventh grade, MY FAMILY AND I moved here
get everything done, anyway. (THE S IS NOT NEEDED.)

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job In New York

Lisa asks…

What cities will you find white guys into black women women?

I’m a black woman, i consider myself attractive, im healthy, physically active, intelligent, have a good job, etc. I’m 27 Honestly speaking, I have just always been attracted to white men, but have never dated any. I haven’t dated much at all, really. But as i’ve gotten older in my 20s i know that the pickings are quite slim if i were to reserve myself to black men only anyway. I live in north florida, and none have ever approached me to ask me out lol. I don’t go out in the dating scene a lot, but still. Black men have approached me, complimented me. But white guys wave and honk at me when I’m jogging, so I know i’m attractive to some of them.

I went to new york this summer, and there was no shortage of men who told me they found me attractive. Then i got back home and silence again. WTH? They look or smile…. and dont say anything.

Frustrating.
By the way, Im open to men of ANY race as long as I think we are compatible. I guess I just LEAN toward white men (with dark hair and dark eyes. on the rare occasion i’d find a blond man sexy. but hey they probably don’t find me hot either if they don’t like black women! lol)
J i do agree with nicki here. unfortunately it’s just not happening for me :(

but i am seeing more WM/BW couples than i have a even a few years ago.

i went from an educated, employed middle class mother to someone else altogether. the thing is that i dont want this baby. i dont know what to do. i have never had mental issues before and all of a sudden im feeling very down. i csnt stop crying and am trying my best to keep a brave face around the kids. i have never had suicidal thoughts or thoughts of hurting my children who currently live with me. however i have done everything within my power the past couple weeks to get rid of the baby inside me.i dont want her to die. i just want her to b born. i feel as if i delivered her that i could find another job and get back on my feet. now summer vacation in new york city begins today and my children will b at home with me all day. i dont want them to see me unhappy. i do not abuse them and they actually keep me smiling and make me so happy when they r here but i constantly cry and i dont want tem to see that.
i need some type of help. i need to have this baby. i need to talk to someone about this. it hasbeen bottling up inside me for months and i cant take it anymore. i need a solution please help me.

Mikey answers:

Call the department of child services. You can always put the child up for adoption.
There are people out there that would love to have your child.
Please do that for the child. That does not make you a bad person.

Paul asks…

Can ANYONE help me please!!!!?

Hi there,

I’m a Scottish 22 year old female and myself and my sister would LOVE to work in either L.A or New York next Summer. On every single website it looks absolutely confusing how to start going about this. We’d love to get office jobs if possible. Does anyone have any tips of organising this please? What do we need to do? Everywhere says “visa but only when u find work” but how do u go about, as a tourist, locating a job etc…..seems soooooo difficult

Thanks!

Mikey answers:

It IS difficult. You cannot get a work visa without having a job lined up. You cannot work or seek work when in the U.S. On a tourist visa. The SAME requirements apply for U.S. Citizens wanting to work in the U.K. If you can find a job with a British company with offices in the states, that is a possibility. However, usually , companies do not go to all the work and expense of bringing over office staff…just high tech type employees. Working in a foreign country is nearly impossible. The only “practical” thing I can suggest is for you two to work like crazy, save as much as possible, and be able to come for 90 days as tourists and enjoy yourselves. Good luck to you.

Robert asks…

How does my story sound so far?

It was a cold, dreary morning in New York City, and I was walking, hands stuffed in coat pockets, to my old apartment – my first apartment, and also, the first and only place I ever really felt at home at. I hadn’t seen the place in ages, and I had the sort of anxiety one might have visiting an old friend. I guess it was because in the back of my mind, I was hoping that as soon as I got there, I would, indeed, find an old friend waiting inside. I was hoping that as soon as I would climb the stairs of that little brownstone, I’d get to the door, Apt. No. 4, insert the key, but before I could turn it, the door would swing open and I’d see none other than Ellie Spinelli standing there, smiling, waiting happily for my return. Of course, that was impossible. I hadn’t even seen or heard from Ellie since I left New York, shortly after my twenty-first birthday, a very distant memory now.
Really, the only reason I was even returning to New York was to recapture that part of my youth, which wasn’t much of a youth at all. Well, I lived in the fast-paced, never-ending way that a young adult does or at least should, but I realized later on in my life that most of that time was spent in utter misery and heartache, caused by none other than the infamous Miss Ellie Spinelli, Miss Ridiculous Name, Miss Ridiculous in Every Single Way.
In fact, I don’t think New York would’ve even been that special to me had it not been for Ellie. When I arrived in the city, I was transfixed by all the possibilities, but I realized right away that New York was just a shallow mess of concrete and noise. I was twenty when I bought my first apartment there. I had abandoned my banal existence in a small town in Kansas, where I grew up. I graduated from college in Wichita and feeling as though I was merely drifting in the empty sky above corn fields and feeling complete nothingness, I scraped up what little dough I had made from working on my uncle’s farm every summer and set out for New York. I spent my time before that purchasing New York newspapers and circling every ad for available apartments, at least ones in my price range. I had won a small prize in a journalism contest my last year before graduation and I used this to supplement the purchase of a small, one-bedroom apartment. I said nothing to my family about this, they would’ve said I was crazy and tried to stop me, which they did when I packed up my things one lazy Sunday afternoon and headed into town to board my bus.
As soon as I got to New York, I had a job interview waiting for me (I really had planned everything out). It was with a prestigious newspaper and although the position was a small one, in my head I imagined quickly impressing my superiors and almost instantaneously rising up the ranks, becoming a valuable reporter and then maybe even a renowned columnist. But really, it wasn’t my dream. I went to school to study journalism, but only because I liked to write and it seemed to be the most realistic possibility for me to do so. I had always wanted to be a real writer, an author, but I lacked true inspiration and I knew this, so I settled for writing the news.
If Ellie ever taught me anything, it was never settle.
Nonetheless, I was excited by all that seemed to await me. I walked into the establishment, every bit of me looking shined and polished, clean-cut, slicked-back and well-mannered. I dished out my qualifications to a Mr. Weinstein – a man who gave off the appearance and demeanor of a man who just stuffed himself on Thanksgiving – and he seemed none to impressed with me, but somehow I managed to land the job. I was now Robert Zimmerlee, budding journalist.
So my first few weeks in New York seemed wonderful, at least wonderful in that I was finally experiencing something different. I felt free and took satisfaction on my going out on a limb by coming there. I didn’t regret a thing. My apartment wasn’t as bad as I had expected it to be. To be honest, I imagined rats and complete squalor because of my lack of very sufficient funds, but the area really wasn’t that bad, except for being loud and bustling, and still even with all those people, it was a little lonely. The apartment was dark and cramped, but it was mine and that’s all that mattered to me.
When I wasn’t working, I spent almost all of my time inside my apartment, hunched over an ancient computer struggling to find something worth writing about that wasn’t news. I wrote a few short stories. One was about a man who moved into an old house, only to find it was haunted by the ghost of a little girl. He became so invested with her, that he soon started to forget she was a ghost until he finally became so obsessed he went completely mad.

thats all I could fit on here but does it sound good so far?

Mikey answers:

You should never start a story, or a sentence for that matter, with, “It was…” No one will want to keep reading. You’d probably have better luck getting a teacher or friend to read this for you.

William asks…

Meeting boyfriend tonight to break up with him…just need some support?

I am planning to meet my boyfriend later on tonight and going to tell him in person that it is over. I just want some support before I go.
He constantly wants to talk to me on the phone. Im one of the few women out there that like talking on phones. Especially long lengthy conversations. I am a single mother of 3 and sometimes I don’t have time to be on the phone. We do talk however but he gets upset when I have to go because my kids need me for something or what not. Then he wants to substitute talking for texting. I hate that too. I don’t have time to be texting a conversation with him. We do talk but again, he gets mad that I take forever to respond.
I now got a summer job hanging drywall. I will be working with all males. I have had jobs BEFORE we met doing painting, construction, all with males too and he is now upset that I took this job. It’s awesome money yet he wants me to look for some office job or something. I am used to working labor jobs and office jobs are not my thing.
Lastly, he lies over the most stupidest crap. Nothing to even lie about yet he does. For example, he lies that he has a dentist appointment, when in fact he doesnt. Or that he just tells stories that I find out later he lied about. I caught him lying about his cousin dying in Iraq when his mother verified she is alive and well living in New York. WTF?
I have had it and I don’t deserve to be with someone who has insecurity issues and lies to me constantly.
Am I right? Or should I just address the issues to him, stand by him and help him get some therapy?

Mikey answers:

Kick em to the curve, What was the reason for him lying bout his cousin death? Thats like wishing death upon someone, You dont do that $hit!!
You need a real man, Someone like me!!!

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job In New York

Jenny asks…

Buenos Aires Film Industry Job?

Hey, I’m a young filmmaker living in New York City. I’ve worked on a lot of Independent Films over here, and have a film education. I was thinking about moving to Buenos Aires (like next summer) for a year or 2. I want to get involved in feature films down there, but the problem is, I don’t know much about how the film industry works down there. I have seen a lot of Argentinean films, an I am a fan. So what I’m asking is how would I go about finding a job in films or even TV down there? If anyone has any contacts or links that would be great.

..and I’ve been speaking Spanish since I was 3, and have been to Buenos Aires before, and love it.

Where can a 14 year old find work?

Im 14 and i live in Plainview, New York. I need to make money over the summer. Nobody tell me about babysitting or mowing the lawn or something like that because you cant find a job like that in this decade. If someone could find something that would help alot.

Mikey answers:

Bakers
Barber Shops
Hairdressers
Restaurants Waiting
Hotels waiting/ silver service/ housekeeping

These are the main places that tend to take on people under 18.
Just go in and ask if they need anyone.
With the hairdressing, be sure to tell them thats what you want to do when ur older.

Or, buy stuff from charity shops and sell it on ebay.

Laura asks…

i have a job interview to go to?

i just graduated university, and couldnt find a full-time job right away so i took an unpaid internship with a modest stipend at the end just to occupy myself for the summer and have more experience (it is a seasonal project and i do not foresee any full time opportunity here). i negotiated with my supervisor to work 4 days a week with the plan that id be able to use my day off for any interviews i have.

this looked like it would work great as i got invited for an interview to a job i really want. it is in new york and i am in boston, so i asked if i could come in on friday but one of the managers cant make it so the recruiter asked me what other days i am available excluding fridays. what can i tell my internship supervisor so i can miss a day to go to new york?

Mikey answers:

I would just be flat out honest. They obviously know that you are job-hunting and since you are working for free, what can they expect?

James asks…

this question is for adults who live in north carolina?

I live in New York. My father lost his job last summer and we can no longer afford to stay here. We have chosen to move to North Carolina. My father is a public accountant and is 65 years old. My mother used to work as a secretary, but quit after she had to raise 3 kids. She currently works at a small supermarket. She is underpaid for what she does, but her boss cannot afford to give her a raise. She is 55. What are the chances of my parents finding jobs in North Carolina considering what I have just said? We are looking in the southern pines and pinehurst area

Mikey answers:

New York, New York…I am sorry to hear about your Dad losing his job however, moving to North Carolina sounds FANTASTIC. It is less expensive, housing and taxes are so much more reasonable than in NY, the weather is better and the Southern Pines/Pinehurst area while quiet and small, is only about an hour south of the Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill area which is the Research Triangle. Also, it is one of the top golfing areas in the country. Lots of tourism, tournaments, etc.

I can’t tell you what the chances are your parents will find jobs in North Carolina. I am not sure if anyone could tell you however, I can tell you that a dollar goes a lot further, the people are nice and the pace is much slower (assuming you are around NYC). Even if the pay is less, the cost is less. I am confident that if your parents think this is the right move, they will find jobs. It will work out. Sounds like there could be more reasons to move to NC than just jobs.

I would suggest getting the local newspaper and the newspaper for the triangle area and begin to take a look at what job are available and where they are located. They would help in determining where is the best place to live. There are 10 colleges within a 2 hour radius of Pinehurst so perhaps your Dad could even begin his own small practice or even teach a night course on accounting at one of the schools to begin with. Adult Education or something like that?

Hope this helps and good luck.

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job In New York

Maria asks…

how hard is it to find a job at mcdonalds in NYC?

I have been looking for work almost the entire summer time. i have tried everywhere. supermarkets, m,any resturaunts and alot of corperate places like staples. i havent tried McDonalds yet though. i also have to mention that im 21 with absolutely no work experience and i just completed high school. this sounds bad but in my defence i didnt give up on school. my parents didnt want me to work and school at the same time because they thought i would just drop out. now i have to work because im going off to college. i need to know if its hard to get a job at mcdonalds in queens new york for a 21 year old with no work experience? is it possible to apply to more than 1 mcdonalds how many days should i wait to call back and see how my application is doing? please help me answer these questions…i really need to work…thank you if you read this much!!! :}

Mikey answers:

Congratulations some people give up so it doesn’t matter how old u r.
You can try McDonald’s they are always hiring and yes put in applications to more than one of them because they are not all run by the same company. If you know where the mall is you know where the mall is apply for every store.
Good luck on your job search

Charles asks…

I’m planning to getaway , what do i need?

In my situation , i should run away just to give my self some time alone. Obviously i’m to young to run away and i probably won’t even have enough money to run away some place so that’s why i’m going to wait like a year or two. I just need a plan. Money , of course , transportation , food , etc…
I know i need to get a job , save up about 600 dollars. I could save even more money to buy a car but Thad take forever. I’m trying to be rebellious before i turn 18. i’ll probably just take a friend who has their license or whatever. I live in Maryland and all i need is a place to run away too. Florida? nah, i go their every summer. New York , just went . same with ocean city and Myrtle beach. I guess i can’t go anywhere to extreme… so help me find a place along the east coast that’s perfect to go to?
Ps : I would tell at least my older sister that i’m running away.

Mikey answers:

Well i have the same problem but what you need is some canned food, water, clothes, money, maybe a weapon like brass knuckles or a knife cuz you never know what is going to happen , sleeping bag, fake id,and your best friend (if you trust him). This is what i need for when i go to mexico or vegas.

James asks…

Fluent speakers–can someone translate these into Spanish for me please?

I have to have a conversation in front of the Spanish class today, and I want a base to start out my topics so I don’t freeze up. Would someone pleaseplease translate these for me so I have an idea of how to start my oral? I’m terrified of public speaking. Thank you so much!!

1. The economy is the worst I’ve ever seen. I know it was worse during the Great Depression, but I never imagined it could get this bad. I have considered moving to a big city to find a job because this job pays so little and I’m having trouble finding a new one. All of my credit card bills are past due, and I can’t seem to pay off my debts. I had to take out a loan against my house in order to pay for my son’s college tuition. I don’t know how I will ever pay it back with my current salary. If I had known before how bad the economy would get, I would have made investments and figured out how to save more money. Now, it seems hopeless.

2. The best spring vacation is traveling to New York City. My mother and I go every year to see the newest fashions and shop for summer clothes. New York is beautiful in the spring because there are so many people in the parks and on the streets enjoying the weather. The street vendors are out selling hot dogs, and there are festivals in the parks. My favorite part about going on vacation in New York is the musicals. This year, my mother lost her job, so we can’t afford to see as many shows at the theater. If I had known earlier, I would have started saving. Anyway, we’ll have lots of fun this year.

3. Technology is developing so quickly. Every day, I’m amazed by the new advances. I can only imagine what it will be like in the future. The computers are already so advanced, but I think that soon all computers will have screens you can touch instead of keyboards. Also, I’m sure that new technology will emerge soon that makes even laptops much more portable. This will be great especially for me because I’m a reporter, and I take my laptop everywhere. If the computer is very tiny and light, it won’t put so much strain on my back. I also think that cars will stop running on gasoline soon. This will greatly reduce carbon emissions and save the planet. If people had known a long time ago what damage cars do to the earth, they would have started developing technology much sooner, I think. I love new technological developments because as a reporter, my life is all about efficiency.
I know it’s kind of heavy, but if you’re fluent it should only take a minute–I would be SO!! thankful. Please? Someone?

Mikey answers:

Mikey answers:

Hey u can approach 2-3 parents in your neighbourhood and tell him that you are a babysitter & like babysit around 2 kids at a time so in this way they might be happy to give u the child to take care of it or u might tell one of your aunt and her spread the word abt u (the babysitter), but ull havta prove to the other parents that you are a good babysitter of the kid by taking good care of them !

Richard asks…

What should I say to my Rich Brother who calls me lazy because I can’t keep a full time job?

Because I have a problem with depression.
I’m taking whatever medicine my psychiatrist prescribes.
But it only helps solve 40% of the depression problem.

My rich brother became rich because he married a girl from a rich family who works in real estate.
His wife’s family owns buildings (I don’t know how many) in the New York City area.

My ???ambitious??? brother comes into work at 11:30 in the morning and usually leaves early at around 2:30 pm when he has to go to the bank to deposit the money that came in that day from people who rent space or apartments in buildings his wife’s family owns or manages.

And then he goes home for the rest of the day.

During the summer he leaves for his summer vacation home in Upstate New York Thursday afternoon at 3:00 pm
And comes back at 1:00 pm the following Monday afternoon

And for the last 2 weeks of August he goes on a fancy Vacation trip somewhere
In December Christmas time he goes for another 2 week fancy vacation.

I once asked him if he would ever help me financially or help me find a good job and he said No.

My brother doesn’t seem to have the energy to help me. But he has enough energy to criticize me for being depressed.

Mikey answers:

Your brother is not worth wasting your time on-dont rely on him to help you, help yourself. Get a job yourself. Go to a support group/therapist, learn coping mechanisms to deal with the depression. Get a hobby, keep busy.

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job In New York

Carol asks…

Great jobs/internships/volunteer opportunities for summer?

I’m having a hard time finding something that’s not marketing or business related for the summer. Does anyone know of something where I could work with education, teaching Spanish or English, or maybe something like Habitat for Humanity? Or anything else you’ve heard of that’s interesting. In the Philadelphia or New York regions. Thanks.

Mikey answers:

Good for you for looking NOW for volunteering for the summer; the best programs will be filled by the middle of April, even earlier!

Chris asks…

Why Can’t I find a job in NYC?!?!?!?!?

Hey I’m sixteen years old and I want a job this summer. I’ve went to many stores around my neighborhood, and lots of stores in nearby neighborhoods. What am I doing wrong? I live in New York, NYC and in the Bronx. I would even go to manhattan to find a job. Every store I go to the manager is always saying “Sorry not hiring, go away please.” Does anyone know a place in the Bronx or Manhattan where I can work at? Maybe I can be a bike messanger or whatever. Thanks! :)

Mikey answers:

Obama.

Sandy asks…

How hard will it be to find a good job in the US?

Hi, I’m American but been living overseas for two years and this summer, my job ends and I am coming back to the states. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology and am going to be working on a masters in human resource management and policy studies come this spring. My question is, with the economy the way it is right now, how hard will it be to find a job? The master I will be doing is through online courses through State University of New York, so I can move anywhere in the country, where should I look to go? I really have no clue where to start…I am scared I will get there and not be able to find work…How bad is it to find a job now?

Thanks.

Mikey answers:

It’s tough but if you have a strong background it’s not impossible.

My advice: look to careerbuilder.com – keep the search open since you can work anywhere – input your degree and see what jobs come up. Look at those companies and go directly to their websites to apply to the listed job and see if there are others that they have not listed on the popular job sites that you might be qualified for. Make certain your cover letter expresses that you are returning on ___ date.

Good luck

Linda asks…

is it so hard to find a job becasue of the my area?

I live in new york city and ive been searching for work for nearly a month, but i had 1 interview but i was so nervous i really messed up. everytime i go to store to apply for a position, im told to apply online. i do just that, but no one calls me.

if having a job is a standard for any human being, why is it so difficult? is it becasue im just in the city? is it just as difficult to get a job anywhere else? is there a place that i can go to help me find a job? this is so depressing, i just finished high school and im done with summer, but now i have nothing to do :(

Mikey answers:

The difficulty of finding a job is not just geographic in fact that has little to do with it. Recent reports from the labor dept. Of the us indicate that jobs require more education than in the past so many people who were perfect for their jobs 5 years ago are being replaced. Which floods the job market with those who are unemployed. I just found a job after 6 years of unemployment and was very lucky to have had the money to afford such a wait. You might need to refresh your resume or put one together since most employers use the Internet almost exclusively as a source for employees.

Maria asks…

New York City! What’s it like to live there?

I visit every year, and I would love to live there for a year or two while I’m still single. Is it possible to find a job there? An apartment? Living expenses are way more expensive there than where I live, and I’m scared of the change of lifestyle. I’m scared I won’t find any friends! I’m scared of going broke too, but I want to have the experience while i’m still young and have no dependents. Like I said, I visit every summer and live in a friends apartment for a week, but i’m still a tourist. Anyone out there that has lived there or lives there now that could give me some pointers, advice, etc. ??

Mikey answers:

It`s a BIG city and lots of people of course it`s fun but then at night with all the lights it`s hard to sleep if u live like right close to the city but you will be able to meet lots of people and make new friends. You would want to try to live near brooklyn it`s like 20 min. On train and plus lots of apartments cheap some messy some nice but other than that you should try to live there for at least two years

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job In New York

Steven asks…

Good job for 17 year old: READ FURTHER?

I live in New York City and I have 5 years experience at a hospital doing clerical work. I answered phones, filed documents, handled applications, assisted people with questions and took messages. That is a lot of experience for someone my age and even tho its great, its still hard to find a job willing to allow a 17 yr old to work there. That job was only a summer job & that is the only reason i dont work there during the school year. I get out of school at 12:30 and would be willing to work about 4-5 hrs a day. I’m in my senior year of high school and there are A LOT of things to pay for, and even though my parents will pay for it, I want to help out as well. Any suggestions? Or New Yorkers, know of any openings? Hehe

Mikey answers:

Maybe it’s different in NYC, but a 17 year old who can be out of school at 12:30 and is willing and eager to work 4-5 hours a day is something that most employers jump all over.

Fast food, smaller restaurants, teen-ish clothing stores…places like that would kill to have someone like you. Just keep applying and you’ll find a place eventually.

Charles asks…

my name is karim iwent to usa last summer as exchange student i wanna know if it easy to get visa this year?

i worked in mcdonalds md last year actually it wasnt so much nice it was nice maybe to make the money i was living with alot of peoble in the house so they were cutting some hours from us to give it to other peoble i applied in this programme this year and i keep looking for a jobs in new york city and i sent to alot of places and alot of sites as j1 jobs but it didnt work so i really need help how to find a job in new york for me and my friend from bulgaria we wanna be together and aslo about the visa it is easy to take it second time my friends here apply for a toursit visa and they took visa for 5 years this happeend for alot of peoble i wanna know about that
i will be very appreciated if someone can help me

Mikey answers:

I don’t think it will be very easy for you to get a Visa to come back. My friend was here in 1999 as an exchange student from Germany and has been trying to come back ever since…I think it’s stupid that we keep people like him and you out of the US, but open our borders and let illegals from Mexico in….Hell, if you really want to be here, just sneak in through Mexico….everyone else does…

Helen asks…

Where to travel. California or new York ?

Ok so its always been a dream of mine to travel.. last summer I spent 3 months in new York city (I’m from Ireland) this year I I can’t decide whether to spend the summer in new York again where I am gaurenteed a job or see a whole different part of the country (California where jobs are hard to find) any opinions?

Mikey answers:

You should come to southern California! The weather is beautiful all year round like right now it is 72 degrees in the south bay area (redondo beach, hermosa beach,Manhatten beach). The beaches are heavenly white sand and waves don’t get too big. You can even see dolphins of the coast frequently. Coming to california is definitely a different experience but in a good way. Everything is laid back and there is always something to do. Hope this helped you out :-)

Lizzie asks…

My plan to move to New York. Help?

Hello, everyone. I’m 16 years old, I’ll be 17 on May 12th. I live in Texas. I am a sophomore in high school, but also soon to be an early graduate. I plan on moving to Astoria, Queens, NY the summer I turn 17. Yes, 17. Or in the summer of 2012 when I graduate. You can move out at 17 in Texas, and New York has to respect Texas’s laws. I understand it may be a hassle to live on your own at such a young age. I don’t care, don’t try to talk me out of it. When I go to college, I want to major in International Business, and minor in the French language at Brooklyn or Queens College. I have a job, I work 7 days a week. $7.50/hr, 46 hrs/week. I have two piggy banks to motivate me. One for my move to New York (Metro Card money, rent, deposits, plane ticket, insurance, food, extras, etc.), and one for my car for now (gas money, repairs, etc). My college money will not be any trouble, I have social security (I’m blind out of my left eye and I have ADHD) and they cover for college, but not all of it. So I’m still saving money for college. I have a big dream, so don’t ruin it for me. I know it’s expensive to live there, so don’t even try to talk me out of it. If you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything at all. Few things I want to ask. What I want to know is: Is Queens college a good school? Brooklyn college? Where can I find cheap rent for an apartment in NY? I’m going for $500-$850(?) per month. Again, I know there’s no such thing as “cheap rent”, so don’t ruin it for me!

Thank you for your help in advance! Any bad comments will be reported! If you want to know more, please feel free to send me a message. :)

Sorry for this being so long. :/
I want to get a studio apartment to start off with. 1st guy who answered my question. I’ve been there and I liked it. That’s your opinion. You just wasted your time answering my question and you just wasted my time looking at your answer. No offense.

Mikey answers:

If you don’t want anyone to burst your bubble, why are you asking us for advice at all?

Okay, now that I’ve gotten that out of my system, I’ll just tell you about colleges, even though this is completely unworkable:

Brooklyn College and Queens College are both good CUNY schools. In fact, Queens is considered by some to be the best of the 4 year CUNY colleges (the other one that is often mentioned as the best of the 4 year CUNY schools is Hunter College in Manhattan.) However, Brooklyn and City College of New York (CCNY) are both very good schools, too.

But, if you are planning on paying the tuition for residents of NYC, you should know that you won’t be able to do that till you’ve lived here a year. You must be able to prove residency and that requires that you have already lived here for over a year. If you go to the CUNY website, they’ll tell what documents you need to prove residency.

So, at least for the first year, you’ll pay out of state tuition, which is MUCH higher.

This is only one reason you can’t afford to do this. The other is that apartments here cost way more than you think – even a studio!

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job In New York

John asks…

Need Help finding a job…PLEASE!!!?

I’m 15 and I would like to start working. I need the money. Badly… Can’t always live on mom and dad unfortunately…lol Well i was looking to work during school or the summer, but i don’t know where to work. I live in Bronx, New York. so it would be nice to work nearby…or even manhattan… just something… i know nothing about working… so please help!!! thnx…

Mikey answers:

My first job in the Bronx, New York was at Burger King. There are a million Burger Kings and McDonald’s all over the Bronx. Go to your school guidance counselor and get the form for a work permit which you need until the age of 16. Have your parents sign and return to your counselor. It’s that simple. Hell I was 15 over 20 years ago. You guys have it 100 times easier and yet you have no idea what the hell to do. And they said Generation X was the loser generation… Shows how much our politicians knew and know.

im a 18 going to college in the fall. last year i had a summer job it ended in august i have been trying to get a job ever since then but havent been successful. i really hate life im tired of being poor every time i need something i have to ask my parents or grandparents for money. i feel like my parents dont care and my grandparents already do so much for me but they still dont understand my problems. im so ANGRY AND FRUSTRATED.i cant even explain. is the economy that bad? and how am i suppose to get a work experience if no one will hire me and they all ask for work experience? it seems a bit ironic but what can a guy do. i live in new york f.y.i.

Mikey answers:

You can try selling avon, or a waiter/waitress job isnt that hard to get. You can get training for cutting hair, people are ALWAYS hiring for that type of job while im looking for one.

Susan asks…

Does anyone know of a camp that accepts 17 year old counselors?

I’m going to be 17 summer 2011 and I really want to find a fun job away from the city. (i live in New York) I was thinking that a camp counselor would be perfect, but all camps seem to accept only counselors of 18 or older. If you know any camps that accept 17 year olds (or any other fun summer jobs) please let me know.. thanks!!!

Mikey answers:

Many camps accept 17 year olds as assistant counselors, usually a volunteer unpaid position, even 14 year olds can be counselors in training (CIT), a volunteer unpaid position. Check into your local camps about those positions if you are interested in volunteer positions. Many camps will first hire ex-campers into those positions, and generally to become a counselor, they want you to have experience as an assistant counselor, unless maybe you’ve gone through college classes (child development, etc).

Find out when camp hiring is going on, because some start in February, at least in my area. My son’s friends worked as CITs last summer and they loved it, even though they weren’t getting paid.

Good luck!

When I was 17 I worked at a bowling alley in Germany though, maybe you can try working there. Or, put in your application at every shop you can think of. I’m pretty sure NYC has a lot:-)
Good luck, with that kind of experience it should be real easy. Congratulations on your senior year too, God bless:)!

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job In New York

George asks…

i want to live in new york cit and open a music shop… i need some opinions!!?

im 16 right now and i live about 45 minutes from Tampa Florida. i hate it here. its hot its flat and dumb and boring as hell. as soon as i graduate high school i want to move to new york and go to college and start a music shop in the city and be around all the action and fun. i go to the city every summer and every christmas and sometimes on regular weekends because my family has flight benifits. i have my aunts and uncles and my grandmother and cousins up there and because im up there so much i think i can handle it. when i get there i plan on staying with my family for a while and get a job and then attend kingsborough community college in brooklyn (about 25 minutes away from my familys house in queens) for my 2 year degree and get my own place. after that i want to get a degree in a 4 year university and then once i get out of my family’s place i am supposed to have a friend move up with me and help me open our shop. we are going to make custom guitars with custom paint jobs and sell regular instuments and recording softwear as well and offer lessons. we are also going to match any price that anyone else finds listed from any other store. our dream is to do what we love and make some money and have fun in the making. we also know if any thing happens we always have somewhere to fall back to because my family is there and they said they would help us. i understand it is easier said than done because there is alot more in depth parts to this but honestly do you think it is a good idea? any opinion and if you have any suggestions on what would help me then that would be great. i really want to live out this dream and open that shop. i was wondering if you guys could tell me
A) is it a good idea?
B) are there any other community 2 year schools you might suggest to go to other than kings borough?
C) what part of the city would be best to open the store
D) what 4 year university should i go to for a degree in business management and in music?
any answers and other comments are very appreciated thank you :)

Mikey answers:

1. You never open up a business unless you have worked in that business for several years and know the ins and outs and costs. If you are interested in that, start out by getting a sales job in a music store in Tampa. If you work your way up to manager of a music store then you can start to think about owning one.
2. Why would you get your own apartment in NYC when it is horribly expensive and you will need $6,000 for the deposits and first month rent. In NYC they collect first month, last month and a security deposit before you can move in. Stay with a relative.
3. It will probably cost at least $80,000, probably much more, to buy the merchandise, pay first month, last month and security for a rental space plus renovate the rental space.
4. Some stores sell items at a loss to bring in customers. As a small business owner, you will go broke matching all prices. You have to emphasize your service
5. This kind of store may be obsolete by the time you are old enough to open one, so keep your options open.

Sandy asks…

Going to New York City after seven years. Is it worth it?

I really need help on this one! Thanks for your answers in advance! (:

I’m originally a New Yorker, even though I lost my NY accent over the years (but kept my American accent). I’m Italian/American and moved to NYC when I was two years old, therefore I don’t remember anything from Italy; And no, I’m not those typical Italian/American kids in NY. I lived in Fulton Street in NY and my family was pretty American for that matter.

Anyway, I gained citizenship and everything during my time there. I even have an American passport.
When I turned eleven my family decided to go back to Italy (because we hadn’t been there for nine years)
Problem is, when we went back to Italy for two weeks, we liked the completely different lifestyle from NY so much (and I was just a kid) that we decided to move back.
A year later my dad got a great job offer in Vietnam, and now I’m traveling around Asia. It’s incredible! And I’m an International Student now. A much better life than if I would have just stayed in NY, I think?

Next year in January I’ll be 18 and I want to visit NY for the summer. Unfortunately I need an educational excuse for my parents so I’m applying for NYU summer school.
I connected with all my elementary school friends on Facebook by simply finding one friend and posting a picture, they all tagged themselves. Sadly, they all changed so much and are so different that I don’t know if I can talk with them anymore. Most smoke drugs (not addiction, just teenage experiences) and go to amazing parties and stuff. I don’t do any of that. I’m stuck at home with my boring life, even though I travel every few months.
But however, I am very close with ONE girl which was really shy in Elementary. Now she’s an amazing girl! :D Anywayyy…

Question: I remember NY. But not entirely, if it wasn’t for the pictures I’d only remember my school, my friends, my house and my neighborhood (Downtown NY). So I want to visit again, I really really do miss home.
Is it worth visiting? Or should I just take the Euro trip that my parents planned for me?

Please answer! :) Thanks a lot people!

Mikey answers:

Well, THE classic line about New York City is: “It’s a great place to visit, but I wouldn’t want to live there,” so, sure, what the heck, come back to New York City for a summer, enjoy the hell out of it, see the sights, revisit all your old haunts and old friends, but DON’T get stuck here, because if you live here full-time, it will suck the very life out of you!

So, yes, come have a great summer in New York City, and then get the hell out of here while you still can!

Sharon asks…

Name of this book – set in the North of New York State?

Anyone know what the name of this book is?

It’s about a murder. A body is found in a Lake in the Adirondacks in New York, it’s been there for a long time (I think something like 10-20 years). The novel tells the tale of the investigation into the identity of the body and the trial of the man accused of killing her.

The man in his 30s or 40s (approx) with a wife and small child, the wife is fairly wealthy, he has a professional job, but I can’t remember what exactly… One of the big clues is a ring belonging to the man which the body was found with. The man is on death row and is executed.

The story tells the background of the two of them meeting, a summer romance, the man’s other girlfriend (now his wife) and the group of people in the Adirondacks for the that summer.

Any help appreciated, a friend wants to read it and I can’t remember the title or the author.

Thank you.
Additional – I should have said, it is absolutely NOT anything to do with the Gillette case covered in An American Tragedy. But thanks anyway lol.
More Additional – thanks again, but Northern Light is about the same case as An American Tragedy.

I should have also said, this book’s ‘present day’ is somewhere in the 80 or 90s I think, so the murder is set somewhere in the 20 years preceding that. If I remember correctly of course lol
I think we have a winner!! Thank you Cabin Fever, that’s the book.

Thanks for everyone trying, I appreciate the effort.

Dancehall by Bernard F Conners
On June 4, 1982, the body of a young woman surfaced from 300 feet of water in Lake Placid, New York. Because of the depth and intense cold of the water, the body which was determined by medical examiners to have been submerged for over twenty years, was remarkably well-preserved. At the time, the authorities were unable to establish the identity of the woman but concluded that her death had been violent.

…”David Powell, husband of upstate-N.Y, heiress Sue and father of adorable, ill little Dana, gets a shock when a body surfaces in nearby Lake Placid: could it be the corpse of a girl whom teenager Dave met briefly 20 years ago? It could indeed. And Dave, who’s acting mighty guilty (but isn’t, of course), quakes. . . As the FBI, re-investigating the old disappearance case, closes in on him. Meanwhile, too, it seems that Dave’s coolly gorgeous business-partner Emily (a dear, bitchy chum of Sue’s) knows that he has a secret related to the long-ago crime–and is using her knowledge to pressure him into a disadvantageous business move. But though Dave is soon arrested for the 20-year-old murder, the reader’s suspicions have been led elsewhere: Emily and Sue, it appears, are secret lesbians (no wonder Sue has always been so chilly with Dave!); a private-eye who attempts to blackmail Sue is promptly a fatality, as is a Powell-estate retainer who Knew Too Much. And, while Dave is tried, convicted, and sent to Death Row, it becomes likely that the Sue/Emily liaison is connected to the long-ago murder–especially when, at the corny last moment, Dave’s lawyer comes up with some evidence that clears him. . . And elicits a confession from the quasi-psycho…”

Why can’t grad student with work experience find a job in NYC?

I’m a first year grad film student studying abroad. I got two internships for the summer in New York City since I want to work there when I graduate, I decided to go to NYC. but I can’t find any paid part time work at all in sales or food service and hospitality. I’ve worked two jobs all through undergrad, but employers are telling me they are getting 80 resumes for one position. I’ve looked at minimum wage positions because that’s all I need to get by.

I’ve utilized my university’s career center in the city and they haven’t been any help.

At this rate, I might have to leave due to lack of food, but it would be a shame to let two great internship opportunities go by.

Was going to NYC a mistake?

Mikey answers:

Anywhere you go you will have a hard time. Its because of the economy unfortunately. Especially where you are looking its near impossible, and even if you do get a job in one of those places you will most likely get only a few hours a week.

~ I don’t want to wake up early in the morning. (Waking up early is not my thing)
~ Something that isn’t far away

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job In New York

Mandy asks…

Looking for a place in midtown manhattan for around $1025 a month?

I am moving to Manhattan this summer as I have found a business job in New York City and I am coming in from Toronto (Canada).

$1025 per month is about the most I could let for rent. Does anyone here know whether or not that is enough to rent a reasonable suite to stay in Midtown Manhattan?

Mikey answers:

There’s no way – the tiniest studio in a sixth-floor walkup with no air conditioning would cost more than that. It’s hard to find anything decent in a good part of Manhattan for less than $2000. Even with a roommate you would probably expect to pay $2500 for a decent 2-bedroom. In your price range, look at Jersey City or Hoboken in New Jersey, or Astoria or Jackson Heights in Queens. If you are working downtown consider St. George in Staten Island.

Best nursing schools in New Jersey/ New York area?

I want to be an ER nurse and am currently taking my prereqs at a community college. I have a 4.0 GPA and a lot of potential. I want to go to Rutgers New Brunswick, but I know it’s almost impossible to get in, even with a 4.0. What are some really good schools for nursing in New Jersey/New York area? What are the chances of getting into these schools? I want to check some out this summer, I am thinking of TCNJ but would like to know of the best options. Also, I want to get my BSN instead of my RN and would like to know if that would give me more of an advantage of finding a job?

Mikey answers:

Getting into the BSN program at Rutgers NB is not impossible at all. I think your CC GPA demonstrates that you have what it takes to be successful. Definitely apply

Other BSN programs in NJ include [with my suggested list of priority] :

Rutgers Newark [2]

Rutgers Camden [4]

TCNJ [3]

Wm Patterson

Richard Stockton

New Jersey City U in Jersey City

Thomas Edison

Check teams’ websites. I sometimes see ads for sales reps for ticket plans. Heck, you should have the connections already, why are you asking us?

How much should I charge for a Dog-Walking service ?

I am a teenager in New York City trying to find a good summer job. Dog Walking came to mind ! Its going to be a local dog-walking service. Any Ideas for the amount of pay ? Please Help

Mikey answers:

Try for $10 an hour, and so that would work out at $10 a dog, or just go looking for people who do it in your area and take a $ off your price
