Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job

Paul asks…

What are some tips to finding a great summer job?

links would be awesome!!!

Mikey answers:

Just think of something you like to do and find a way to apply it.

Me, I like good conversation and meeting new people generally….so I am going to start working at a coffee shop where the manager was a college professor in theology.

Something like that.

Lisa asks…

How do I find a summer job?

I’ve been looking for a job for a couple months now but for some reason a lot of businesses are only hiring people over the age of +18 and I’m only 16, and I was going to go to our town’s job fair, but it was the same day as my SAT. I’m not picky at all, I am desperate for any job. How do I go about finding a job?

Mikey answers:

Go to the nearest McDonald’s, Burger King, and Taco Bell; they are always hiring especially in the summer.

Ken asks…

Mark asks…

Job sites for a 15 year old for summer?

I am 15 years old and I am looking for a job site to find a job for the summer. The thing is though I am looking for my first job, and I have been out of the country for the past 2 years and just came to the states recently, so therefore all my references don’t even speak English except for my family. I already applied for some jobs, but they weren’t really the right jobs for me. I just need to know where a good site is to find jobs in Mankato MN. Thanks for the help.

Mikey answers:

A few things:

- References can be anything, including teachers. Family isn’t suggested.
- The fact that you say that the jobs you’ve applied for weren’t the right job for you shows that you aren’t being realistic. At this point in summer, you should be happy with ANY job.
- A good place to start is to just get out and look around. What stores do you frequent, and do they have job openings? You’re going up against adults who are unemployed, so just know that you may not get one this year. Summer jobs should be secured BY the end of May.

Steven asks…

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job

Lizzie asks…

Where and when do you go to find a summer job on a fishing boat in Alaska?

I know in most cases you just show up but where and when?

Mikey answers:

There’s a booklet you can order for about 35 bucks or so that gives you addresses of the places to go. If you’re going to get a job you want to get up there a.s.a.p. The book says most of the jobs are available at the docks on the boats (rather than the gutting and canning factories). The factories don’t pay near as well anyway. Sorry but I can’t remember the specific towns. From everything I’ve seen it’s one hell of a rough way to make money. Unless you’re seriously salty, you better look somewhere a little more tame.

Mary asks…

Where can I find a summer job in austin texas for a 13 year old?

I need a summer job that pay’s good money

Mikey answers:

Babysitting, lawn mowing, car washing, yard work, dog walking, lemonade stand, etc.

I don’t think companies/businesses will hire you because of the child labor restrictions, though you may find some that might….like maybe the Austin American-Statesman needs a paper boy.

Maria asks…

Where can I find summer jobs?

I’m 14 years old and I’m looking for a summer job for teens to do over the summer. I really really really need it! PLEASE HELP!

Mikey answers:

Try a beauty shop and see if you could do the sweeping after haircuts, or check out your local fast food places, doing lawn or yard work, pet sitting or walking, house cleaning

Sandy asks…

How to find Summer Jobs California?

Im 19 currently living in Santa Barbara I would really like a summer job in San Diego or Orange County I’ve looked all over craigs list and didn’t find anything really so I was wondering if anyone knew of another website maybe to look at? I don’t have a car so I don’t have the luxury of driving down to the cities to look around so let me know if you know of any other ways!

Mikey answers:

You can make money by this simple way. Its unbeleivable.! BUT TRUE

Susan asks…

where can a kid find a summer job on house cleaning?

Please i am a 6th grader who has a 4.0 GPA and i get unbeilievable report cards.

Mikey answers:

As long as the “employers” are paying cash money, I don’t think there is a set age. It is whatever you and your parents decide upon. I think it would be something that you could do to earn money.

Good luck.

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job

Donna asks…

Can you help me find a summer job in Alaska?

Really feeling motivated to live in Alaska for awhile. Other than normal route of regularly applying for work, you have any other suggestions?
Have you ever lived/worked there?
I’m especially interested in working at a remote resort, maybe waitressing or housekeeping, but would also consider fish processing if that’s all I could find.

Thanks

Mikey answers:

Princess Resorts, Aramark Resorts, Holland America (Westmark) all hire seasonal help for the summer. I live in Alaska just North of Anchorage, and have made a career in Travel and Tourism here at home. You won’t have a problem.

Linda asks…

Where can I find a summer job in toronto?

Lisa asks…

15.7 year old (16 on august 5) wants to find summer job?

where can i start looking. ive asked around and no luck. internet doesnt seem to help. im looking for theatre and or clerical work. preferably clerical work is at a computer. whre can i find help with this, my school isnt doing anything for me

Mikey answers:

No one has to do anything for you. You need to go and get it. Theaters seem like a good option for you. But even though you are turning 16 in August, they have to treat you like a minor and I think that depending on the state, if you are younger than 16, there are certain shifts and certain responsibilities you cannot do. I know down here 15 yr olds cannot work past 8pm.

Sandra asks…

It is difficult trying to find a job. Can anyone help me? I want to find a job in retail but I will settle for anything that is legal (lol) and pays at least $6.50/hour. The only method of apply for jobs I have been able to practice is applying through the internet, which is not working!!!!!! Please I am losing hope!!!! Does anyone know any place that is hiring?????
I’m going home for the summer. I live in D.C., which is why this process is more difficult.
Please no online surveys or things that involve working at home. Those things do not sound promising to me.

Mikey answers:

Uhh dude look in the newspaper, Jobs Section. Typically you can find jobs in pretty much categories that only requires high school diploma paying minimum wage etc. Jobs like McDonalds for example.

Lisa asks…

How to find a paid summer internship in NYC?

I’m looking for a paid summer internship in law, politics or government. I realize it’s highly unlikely I find any job that will pay a college student, especially with the state of the economy right now. Any suggestions?

Mikey answers:

Check the craiglist for NYC. Also, visit the student employment office in your school for assistance. You may want to talk to some of your professors to see if they have contact in NYC who may be looking for interns.

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job College

Daniel asks…

College Student Summer Jobs?

I was wondering my girlfriend wants to get a job within a law firm for the summer. She wants to be a lawyer so she decided to get her foot in the door and find an office. However i tried looking everywhere online and can not find a thing. Do law firms or offices hire summer help for filing papers or other things? I live in South Jersey. If ayone could please help me out, also she just got interviewed by Vector Marketing. How was that job is that a decent job what do they do?

Mikey answers:

Vector Marketing is one of the worst companies in America. They sell knives door-to-door. Your gf will be required to pay $140 upfront to buy some knives as “samples” to show potential buyers. The company promises to provide “leads” but they never do. They just use the phone book. The knives are super-expensive.
Law firms won’t advertise their summer jobs because they would get 200 applicants per month. She has to go in person and explain exactly what hours and months she is willing to work. A local law firm will hire her but the pay won’t be very high.

Steven asks…

17 Year old girl, need a summer job. (in the UK)?

I really want a job in the summer, but the trouble is i am going on holiday for 2 weeks half way through. But i would keep the job after for weekends or evenings.
I am quite shy and i’m worried that people wouldn’t want to hire me because of that.
I have done work experience and that would go on my CV but i’ve never had a proper job.

What do I do to find a job? Do i randomly go into shops and ask them, and give them my CV or does it say anywhere where there are jobs for teenagers?

I don’t know where I want to get a job. I dont really mind where it is, but please list some suggestions. I was thinknig maybe food stores like asda or morrisons, or clothes stores, or cafe’s.

I just don’t know where to go to to find one, what to do, and i’m really scared that how i am shy is going to affect whether they want to hire me or not.
I need a job for money to buy college supplies, clothes etc.

Thanks :)

Mikey answers:

It doesn’t matter, I’ve enver had a job and am also 17 but they will ask if you have any pre-booked holidays and just not make you work then and it will not effect anything :)

If you’re worried about your CV google connexions and find your local centre, it’s advice for people who are aged 16-19 and drop in, a trained specialist will help you with your cv and fix it up to look top for you! That’s what I’m doing anyway.

Go in shops, go online, phone, be polite but pester on the phone, scrape, scrap, steal jobs. Just do anything. Go in, be polite and say hi is a manager there, if there isn’t just say please can I leave this cv with you? If there is politely say Hi I’m whoever and I’m looking for a job may I leave this with you. If you hear nothing phone and ask politely after a few days/weeks.

And you can’t really be picky, apply everywhere!.

Good luck, you’re not alone out there I am in the same position, it will happen eventually, I’ve had an interview and nerves ruined it so don’t worry if you get a knockback it’ll sort out and you’ll get experience eventually.

Have fun! :)

Laura asks…

Can I find an out of state job before actually relocating? If so, how?

I am thinking of moving to Vegas. I will be graduated from college this coming summer. Can I find a job there in Las Vegas before I relocate there? If so, how?

Mikey answers:

Getting a job in Vegas is very difficult if you dont already live there. Vegas is a very transient town with nearly as many people leaving each month as arriving.

Companies are very wary of spending any resources on out of area applicants because firstly, they may never even make the move and if they do, it will take a while. Secondly, if you do make the move, you may find out quickly that you cant stand living there. It isnt for everyone and many people leaving shortly after arriving.

The concern with considering out of state people seems even worse the higher paying the job. I have applied for several that I was perfectly qualified for only to not hear a peep. This was when I spoke with a recruiter and he told me how things work in Vegas.

My suggestion would be to save up as much as you can to try and hold you over until you get there and find some work.

Good luck on your move!

Mary asks…

im student and i cant find a job for summer. what i can do?

my college told me they don’t offer work study for summer. now i don’t have a job and any income.do welfare or another programs help me for find a job or pay me

Mikey answers:

You can babysit for easy, tax-free cash. Get a gig painting houses. Scope out homes for sale and leave a flier for your services with a name and contact number (and proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, etc.). Manual labor pays pretty well and is always needed, recession or no recession. Offer your tutoring services to children in the neighborhood. Volunteer and get compensation from your parents.

Richard asks…

How can I find a teen summer job? (U.S.)?

Hello, I’m 17 and I’m leaving the area for college at the end of September. I’d like to make a little money before then, but I’ve had three interviews and they all want someone who’s sticking around or who’s already 18. Of course, the recession doesn’t help much either. I’ve mostly been looking in retail and fast food. Should I be looking somewhere else? Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated!

Mikey answers:

Dominos, pizza hut and Mc Donalds are good options for part time jobs for anyone

Daniel asks…

Is anyone else having a hard time finding a summer job?

I’ve been applying for jobs since January. Submitted applications in retail, food service, internships and have gotten nothing. I have applied at close to thirty places. I’ve called places and have always gotten the answer “Oh, well were overstaffed” or “Well we just hired a bunch of people” It seems like no where I apply to is hiring. And sometimes when I call it seems like the managers are bothered to answer my questions. I got offered a job at Forever 21, but they wanted me to work past midnight and were not willing to come to a compromise with my hours. Is anyone else having a hard time trying to find something? I have no money. I’m not paid an allowance. I need to save up for my half of my car. If you do have a job where do you work?

Mikey answers:

I’m having difficulty finding a job, period. I’ve been applying for more than 8 months and still nothing. I’ve applied to probably 50 places: grocery stores, fast food, stores at the mall, restaurants, pretty much everywhere! I live in an area with a lot of teenagers so there are plenty of kids around me who swept up all the jobs.

I’m going to continue applying. I’m really hoping I can get a job at the grocery store because a lot of kids who worked there are headed off to college. Hopefully I can take one spot there. I’m 100% okay with pushing shopping carts in the parking lot. I just want a job!

Mikey answers:

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has a fleet of ships on all coasts of the United States. They sail to other countries, states, and to many islands like Hawaii. It is by far the best summer job I have ever had. The work is easy, the pay in unbelievable, and you get to sail to some amazing places over the course of two or three months. They have a program called STEP, which stands for Student Temporary Employment Program. You can apply online on the NOAA website. You should seriously check it out. Best summers of my life.

Lots and lots of different travel and tourism jobs listed in “Working in Tourism”, together with contact details, requirements etc.

You could ask your library if they have a copy, or get it from Amazon.

Good luck

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job

Richard asks…

How can I find a summer job in Montreal?

I am a teacher so I have this summer off. I really want to do somthing different, but I’m willing to do anyting (almost :) Ideas are retail, tour guide, or something really unusual. I’m open! I’d prefer not to teach but the job has to support living there during the summer (another challenge).

Thank you

Mikey answers:

Look for www.emploiquebec.net for students jobs and other kind of temporary jobs : retails stores, convenients stores hires people for temporarty, part times, full time or summer times. Usually around minimum wage (7.50$) or a little more. Teaching summer courses should be a lot more convenient and well paid, but I don’t know how you can get there, but you can try to call some colleges to ask : like Cégep de Saint-Laurent 514.747.6521 or University Concordia 514.848.2424 for instance.

If you’re out of Canada, get info about your obligations to get a permit for working here. Http://www.easyexpat.com/montreal_en/job_jobs.htm give some good advices for it and other jobs’ ideas.

Sandra asks…

Any tips for finding a summer job?

Hey :) So I am finishing school in a few weeks (June 27th, well, months, but to me it seems closer lol) and seeing as I am finishing my GCSEs I thought this summer would be the perfect opportunity to get some work experience and earn a bit of money.
I was thinking of applying for a job in my nearest shopping centre? I was wondering if you had any advice as to what companies to avoid, how I go about giving my CV in etc etc. I was also thinking of applying at the Apple Store? Would this be a problem at all?
Thanks in advanced x

Where can I find a summer job in Scotland?

I’ve tried multiple searches on Google but to no luck – I’m not sure where to begin. I’m looking for any job that will pay my stay for the summer and I have no particular field that I need to work in. Any help searching would be appreciated!!

p.s. Is there a Craigslist for Scotland?

Mikey answers:

Bryanna, what nationality are you? Have you looked into whether or not you need a work permit before you arrive here, because if you are not a citizen of the European Economic Area, or cannot get the Ancestry visa you will not be able to work here legally without the work permit…

The rules and regulations can be found here…

If you are not a citizen of the EEA and are intending to stay here for a few months then you will have to prove to our immigration that you have the funds to support yourself whilst you are here. It’s not a problem if you are a citizen as you can just turn up and find a place to live and a job.

However, if you are eligible to come here to work then you could try the job centre plus as the majority of jobs are advertised there…

Carol asks…

Would the guidance consellors at my school help me with finding a summer job?

It’s the end of June already and i’m scared that it’s too late for me to apply to most places for summer jobs. I applied for a summer youth jobs program, but my application got rejected so i’m jobless right now.

I’m desperate for a summer job, but i have NO volunteer/work experience…with nothing to put on my resume and i’ve never done an interview.

I want to talk to a guidance consellor at my highschool about applying for summer jobs. But i’m wondering, would they be able to help me out?

I’m 15 by the way.

Mikey answers:

Perfect place to go.

Charles asks…

What should I do this summer if I don’t find a summer job?

I will be 17 years old in June and I will be graduating from high school. I have been looking for a job since April and no one has called me yet. So I need to continue applying at stores.

but what should I do this Summer if I don’t find a job??

Mikey answers:

Have you been submitting a cover letter with every resume? Look at job postings on websites like kijiji.ca
I think you may be able to find something
If not…
Work at a camp
volunteer
do some courses perhaps?
Do a language immersion program (that’s what I did after grade 12 – was an amazing experience – for FREE, paid for by my govt b/c we are a bilingual country)
maybe u could ask your guidance counsellor about possibilities

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job College

Richard asks…

Updated:What summer jobs should I apply for (college student)?

Hey all, I posted a similar question recently, but I wanted to add more information about myself so I get more feedback.

I’m a third year at Yale majoring in Economics. My ultimate goal is to go to law school to study corporate law. I need a summer job to make money too though.

So far I’ve applied to 2 law-related jobs; courthouse internship and Yale Law School data coding, but was rejected to both.

I’ve worked at a law firm for 2 months in the summer before, but that’s pretty much my job experience.

So any ideas? I’m having a hard time finding more law-related jobs/internships?

Mikey answers:

What about the place you worked last summer, have you tried to go back? How about asking that firm if they can recommend anything to you.

Chris asks…

What is a good summer job for a 14- year- old girl?

i am currently a candy-striper and i figured that it would look good on college and job applications but you dont get paid so i wanted a job also so that maybe i can get an actual job next year. i love horses and i live in indiana. please help me find a way to get money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mikey answers:

Other than babysitting and volunteer work. I’m afraid not much of anything. McDonald’s won’t look at you until at least 15. You could always try asking people you know with pets. Ask if they wouldn’t mind paying you a few bucks to walk their dogs.

Nancy asks…

best place for a summer job?

I’m a college student coming home for the summer soon. It’s hard to find jobs that only want a seasonal worker, so I was wondering if anyone has any experience with places to work that will accept seasonal workers or even just let you transfer.

Mikey answers:

Lifeguard, camp counselor (sleep-away camp or day camp)

Mine please?: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110306174947AAH2aa1

Mikey answers:

You could get a job as a deck hand on one of the commercial fishing boats, this would satisfy all your needs
another possibility is to get on with one of the oil companies, but I don’t know about the room and board

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job College

Sandra asks…

Which of these summer jobs should a college student take?

I’m a rising sophomore in college and I’m going to be up in Andover, MA for the summer. I’m doing 15 hours a week of research in a lab and I have the rest of the time free. I’m going to be living in a family friend’s house but I don’t want to be underfoot all the time and I need to make money. There’s a nearby Longhorn Steakhouse I could walk to for work. Or should I try to find a telecommuting job I can just hole up in my room and do on my computer? What do you all suggest?

Mikey answers:

Get out and find something else to do. Interact with others, you will learn a lot more by listening to them than talking to yourself.

Susan asks…

How can I find a decent summer job?

I’m not talking a summerjob” like mowing lawns, or picking up sticks, or cleaning the house for money from your parents. I mean a real summer job. Every place that is hiring (which there are veeery few – around here at least) wants someone that can work year round or wants a person with “experience”…how can a student get any of these jobs? No, we don’t have 2 years experience in fine dining. No, we aren’t looking for full or even part time – just seasonal. And – yes, this has happened to me – no, I’m not in high school, so yes, I do actually have to go back to college at the end of august…oh, you need somebody who can work from now until the the first week of september? That’s why you can’t hire me? Because I’d have to leave one freakin’ week early? B*tch… I know there are jobs like this out there. I just don’t know how to find them. Other than newspapers and craigslist, I haven’t found any other resources. Help? Please? I’m 19 and can’t get a summer job for …’s sake. College students are poor. I don’t want to be a poor college student anymore.

Mikey answers:

Well knowing someone who could refer you, or hook u up would help. Fast food restaurants usually hirer in the summer so if you cant find anything else theres always that. Make a resume, impress, and stay confident. You gotta WANT IT!

Summer Job In NYC? Help?

Hi, I was wondering if anyone had any advice in finding a summer internship/job in Manhattan. I don’t live in NY (I love in VA) and I really would like to spend the summer, or a summer in the future, in the city but really do not know where to begin looking. Any help? Thanks! (Oh, I am a college sophomore)

Mikey answers:

There are too many applicants for internships this year. You might have luck advertising yourself as an “au paire” who watches kids as a job; you get room and board.
Or offer to teach perfect spoken English to anyone who is from another country. You could advertise in some USA foreign language papers..

Sandy asks…

how to find the summer jobs in India ?

i want to do summer job , i live in delhi but i do not know how to find it . i want to do something exiting that give me some pocket money and also improves my communications skills .
i am in 1st year of my college .
plz guide me in getting a job.

Mikey answers:

Check with the ‘Situations Vacant’ columns of the English Dailies. And also look into the recent issues of the local ‘Free Ads’ : You are bound to come across several ads for sales persons, and exhibit guides.
…If you have friends/neighbours who are associated with Ad Agencies, you could also tell them that you need a summer job – as they could directly put you on to their clients who are in need of skilled and friendly persons, to partake in their sales drives.
Best of Luck.
