Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job College

Lisa asks…

Where to look for these types of summer jobs?

I’m thinking about going out to Texas or somewhere out west next summer ( I will have just finished my sophomore year in college) to work on a farm hopefully. I am wondering how I would go about finding these kinds of jobs. Also looking for jobs on oil rigs or anything along those lines.

Mikey answers:

Try checking snagajob.com

Joseph asks…

Is it a good idea to teach violin/piano lessons as a summer job?

I can’t find a SINGLE job for the summer that fits around my summer classes, so I was wondering if it would be a good idea to either give violin lessons (been playing for 10 years), piano lessons (been playing for 12 years), or tutor HS math (I’m a math major in college). The problem with this is that I will not be able to continue giving music lessons once fall term starts because I have a very full class schedule. Do you think this will still be a problem for me? As long as I tell the student/family that the lessons are temporary, it should be okay, right? I hope lol.

I’m 18 y.o., almost 19, and I plan to charge very competitive rates since, despite my experience, I don’t have any “resume-written” experience (ie a music degree).

Mikey answers:

If you feel comfortable teaching (remember playing well and teaching well aren’t necessarily synonymous) and you’re up front with the parent and student I think it’s a great way to earn some money and improve your own musicianship as well. Go for it!

Carol asks…

My girlfriend said there was that spark missing and she didn’t really mean “I miss you” in texts?

My girlfriend and I have been together 7 months and recently have been separated due to her moving back home for the summer. We both attend the same college and had been friends for at least a year before we started dating. This past semester I didn’t do the greatest in the classroom. Obviously I put much more stock into being with her, I was part of a Division 1 sports team, and had to balance a couple tough courses as I am a senior. I feel that I should be able to share my grades with her, and as embarrassing as it was for me to tell her I did poorly (because I am just above average when it comes to my classes) I figured she would at least be understanding and maybe tell me to make sure I get help with class work or even help me a little her self! I had told her my grades and she blew up at me and said she can’t continue seeing me! She doesn’t want to be with me basically cause she values someone who gets good grades! I will admit I struggled and should have asked for help and gave up in one particular class. So that night she ended things. She called back two days later and apologized saying she thinks it wouldn’t be completely right to end things due to that. I told her I will do better and may need her help. That was literally our first ever fight and I could tell the it opened our eyes a little. Not saying that fighting is bad, but it had never happened so it was a little different to us. A week past after that and we have not been able to see each other due to a pretty good distance. She called me kinda out of the blue telling me that she just didn’t feel the same spark anymore. This is only after barely two weeks of being apart. She also mentioned she thought it was unfair to me that when she said ‘I miss you’ via text to me that she just didn’t feel like she meant it that much. She has family around and friends to visit while I am stuck back at college finding a summer job so naturally I feel like I would miss her a little more with nothing going on in my schedule. Is it just me or is there going to be a little lack of spark due to us not being able to be together for the summer? Obviously we never fight and “I have treated her the best she has ever been treated” <– her words. Is she jumping the gun and ending things because she is scared that she doesn't feel the same as I quite do? Is it dumb to end things because I messed up in a couple classes? I know that someone should be with someone because they love them and make them feel good! Which is exactly what we have had for a good amount of time. I’d appreciate helpful and positive feedback. I don’t want anyone hating on her. I truly love her and want to make things work. I think she is just scared. This is new to both of us (the small fight and the distant relationship for the summer)!!

Mikey answers:

Maybe she is just scared alright or she has someone new.

Mikey answers:

I am speechless and it seems to me like she really like the smart or strongest part of you and she is not ready to accept that you also have weakness.
I think that she was considering you as someone indestructible and strong. She does not want to see you vulnerable and weak sometimes, but she has to get used to that because it is the way you are.

Mandy asks…

Can you help me find a camp counselor job?

Can you help me find a camp counselor job?
Okay, so I’m fourteen years old and I want a summer job to help save up for college :) A camp counselor sounds fun and I was wondering if there were any camps in the Virginia/Pennsylvania area that allows you to be that age. Could you give me any links? Thanks for your help!! :D

P.S – Please no spam!!!

Mikey answers:

At that age, you probably can’t get a paying job. In most states you must be 16 and have a worker’s permit, unless you know the person running the camp and they let you. Find camps in your area and contact them to be sure, but you’re better suited for babysitting and dogwalking at fourteen.

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job College

Ruth asks…

How will my low high school GPA in relation to my high college GPA effect my chances of finding a good job?

Currently, I am a first semester senior at a university in the Big Ten with a GPA that rounds up to a 3.4 and a major GPA of 3.6 in Computer Science. However, I had a high school GPA of 1.3 before I went to community college and fixed it up with a 3.78 GPA. I noticed that many employers still ask for my high school GPA on their formal applications for internships and I was wandering how my high school GPA would effect my chances for an internship during the summer. How would an employer view this kind of negative information? I would appreciate any type of feedback that I could get.Thanks.

Mikey answers:

No one cares about your HS GPA. Once you graduate from college it will never come up again. Hopefully this summer they will see that you are working hard in college and overlook your HS GPA.

Robert asks…

Where can i find a part time job in MD before I leave for college?

I’m 17 years old and turning 18 in the summer I am about to graduate form high school and leaving for university of md eastern shore in the summer. I really need a job to help pay for school any suggestion on where i can work?

Mikey answers:

Since you will be working short term how about a summer camp?

James asks…

Is it hard for first year part time law students to find a summer associate position?

I recently was admitted into DePaul College of Law as a part time student. I met with an advisor who told me I would be able to switch to full time after my first year ending in May. My question is, will it be hard to find a good summer associate job after my first year since I only have one year of part time law school under my belt? Will it help that they know that I will not be full time?

Mikey answers:

Yes it will, especially since many large firms are discontinuing these programs due to a glut of lawyers. It is almost certain that none of the big firms will pick you up, but you can probably find a job clerking with a medium or smaller size firm. The pay probably won’t be great but you need the experience. If worst comes to worst and you can’t find a paying job, volunteer somewhere. Though it might not seem like it right now, the experience and contacts you get from clerking during the summer are worth much more than money you earn.

Mark asks…

Job searching — Is this a good idea?

I’m a 19 year old college student and I’m trying to find a summer job. I’ve turned in six applications so far. Someone told me it looks good when you call the manager to “follow up” with your application after you’ve turned it in. Is this a good idea? And how long should I wait to call? Should I blatantly ask for an interview?

Any help in this category would be much appreciated. :)

Mikey answers:

Following up is fine and you should wait about a week. Do not be pesky with your calls.
You can say you are following up on your application and ask what are the chances you will get an interview. State run career centers have a summer job program for 16-24 year old youth. Contact your closest state run career center

Maria asks…

What can an unemployed college student do to make a productive use of her summer?

I’ve had the worst of luck trying to find a job and no one is available to hang out with.

How can I pass time productively and efficiently? I’ve literally been lying around my house the past few weeks with absolutely nothing to do.

Mikey answers:

Volunteer. Its also a nice thing to put on a resume.

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job College

Donna asks…

How much money can I make with a full-time summer job?

I’m seventeen years old and need to start saving up for college… I also want to buy a lap top, and the one I have my eye on is almost six hundred dollars. I want to make as much as possible this summer by getting a full-time job. But I could probably only find a job at a local restaurant or store. (Please give me specific ideas if you have any, by the way! Maybe WalMart, Target, Arctic Circle, Wendy’s…?) Anyway, if I were to work at a cheap place like that full-time (which would be 8 hours, right about four days a week, right?) how much could I get over the full summer vacation (just under three months)? Feel free to share any experiences you’ve had as well :)

Mikey answers:

You can figure this yourself. Multiply the minimum wage amount x the amount of hours you plan to work x the number of days you work.

$7.25 x 8 hour day = $58 a day. Over 3 months if you can work 5 days a week you will earn about $3,480 over a summer. You have to pay Social Security and Medicare taxes of about $200 from that so you will make about $3,280. You won’t owe Federal taxes but may owe a small amount of state taxes depending upon where you live.

Minimum wages are higher in some states. Click on the link below to find the rate in your state.

Good luck!

Ruth asks…

If my major in college is print journalism and I can’t find a writing job/internship then what other field can

my major is print journalism and I have to do an internship over the summer, but I am finding it almost impossible to get anything involving writing. The dean gave us an online list of newspaper places where we could possibly get internships, but there are only like 2 places I would have access to, and neither of them seemed to be able to help me when I called them. In addition, I do not want to work with a newspaper anyway. So if I could not get an internship at a newspaper place, are there any other places, i.e. government places where I can easily get an internship, whether or not it involves writing? Even if it just involves office tasks or something else, I am sure that would suffice. Does anyone know of any places? I really need to find a place because I need an internship and I am running out of time.

Mikey answers:

Nonprofit organizations are usually delighted to get interns – and you would have a broader experience there than at a newspaper.

Some nonprofits that I can think of are YMCA, a large church, the Red Cross, museums, and facilities that help the unfortunate. (My megachurch maintains a Samaritan Center where they sell people’s donated clothing and household items and help people who have been burned out or are out of work, etc.) All such organizations do a lot of public relations work.

Or, perhaps you can intern in the mayor’s office! Depending on the size of city you live in or near, there should be a lot of potential places. You will need to clear whatever you choose, however, with your dean.

George asks…

I might be getting this job at the dealership?

The manager had three positions opened ~ auto detailing (commission), courtesy driver (I’m assuming minimum wage?) (Nebraska), washer/dryer in servicing

Which one seems more reasonable. I’m a college student finding a full time job during summer.

Mikey answers:

Driver would the most fun with not as much manuel labor.

James asks…

I am a college student, this summer I want to move to somewhere else in the USA, maybe another country to get?

a summer job…I have heard of things where they give you housing and food but only pay you little. what is this called and how can i find out about them. I want to go somewhere I can have fun with other kids my age (im 19)

Mikey answers:

You are probably referring to an Internship. There are many opportunities out there… You should talk to your advisors about internship opportunities that relate to your major. These will look great on your resume, and you’ll definitely be above everyone else if you have BOTH a degree and real experience in the field.

Donald asks…

Question about finding a job?

So I really want to get a job this summer to start saving money to pay back college loans and a car I’m getting soon. I’ll be done with my first year of college in a few weeks and will head home to San Diego promptly. I have no experience working, and I know the economy isn’t in it’s greatest shape. Do I have a shot at getting a job? I really want experience but I have no idea where to begin! Help please?

Mikey answers:

Drive the Snack Cart at the local golf course. If that job isn’t open, caddy. It is one of the best jobs you can do.

Apply at office buildings and industrial areas where most people don’t apply. Avoid the retail stores and grocery stores which are getting 100 applications per week.

You may have to invent a job for yourself. Learn how to fix an HDTV. The current wait for a repairman is 3 weeks.

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job College

Nancy asks…

Help finding a 2nd part time job?

I need to work 2 jobs this summer. I have a M-F day job and I am taking a college class (PE) M-Th evenings. My availability for my 2nd job would be Fri. nights and Sat-Sun open. Do you know of any jobs or employers that will hire someone to work only 3 days a week? Please help.

Mikey answers:

I would try various restaurants and apply as a waitress or even cookstaff. I work at a country club and make (before cash tips) between 8-9 dollars an hour because of the tip pool. Some weeks it’s more like 10-11 dollars/hour.
Also try movie theaters-those are their busy nights, and I hear they pay somewhat decent.

Sharon asks…

somewhat fun

(maybe like small shops or outlets??

maybe even some sort of preschool thing-i like to work with kids and im cpr certified )

just something to get a little money for the summer and college
but doesnt consume my ENTIRE summer(a moderate, constant job)

p.s…trying to stear clear of working in foods :S

i know thats a lot of demands but..any suggestions???

Mikey answers:

Maybe you should try working at a recreation center… Like working with Lil kids n stuff. I am actually applying for that at a clay madsen recreation center.

Jenny asks…

Disabled college student searching for job advice?

Like many people, I need a job (specifically for the summer).

I’m a rising junior in college, double-majoring in both French and English. I live in southeast Virginia, and I’m willing to do any job that I can physically do. I’m in a wheelchair some of the time but I can walk; basically I get tired easily when walking.

I’m fluent in French, have been published in a local poetry book, can type 70-80 words per minute, and I have outstanding customer service skills. I’ve got some volunteer experience, and have excelled in the academic world. I’ve been on the Deans List since starting college, and have won first place in a statewide French fluency competition, among other things. The problem is I don’t have the necessary degrees or minimum experience to be considered for the jobs I am most suited for.

As for my disability, I’ve pretty much ruled out everything related to food or frequent standing because they will exhaust me.

What suggestions can you give me on how to find a job?

Also, what are the chances of finding a job I could physically do through websites like www.workforstudents.com? I’ve heard a lot of, if not all of the jobs given out by websites like that are things I just can’t do, such as pool cleaning or roofing.

Thank you for your help.

Mikey answers:

Nathan, just list those wonderful talents you have and boast about them! Sell youself. In California, on every application they ask if you are disabled and this actually will give you the edge!

Carol asks…

How to find a job between college years?

It’s the summer now and I have just completed my first year of college. My program is only two years so I am halfway done. I am taking Business and Insurance programs and majoring in Insurance. I have already worked for the last 2 and a half years at Mcdonald’s starting as crew and working up to a crew trainer position. I know that doesn’t sound all that impressive, but I am hoping to get something related to what I am going to school for.

I am unsure what jobs I can even apply for, I have just been applying to anything. I am just afraid I will have to be a dishwasher or something :S And not get paid much. I realize I don’t have much to offer but how do I convince an employer to take a chance on me? I am so scared to job hunt again because when I first got my last job 3 years ago I had a heck of a time getting a chance. I lived in a small town and there are no opportunities there. I have since moved to a city and there are more jobs, but am having a hard time standing out.

Any help would be great! Also tips on what to do and what not to do would be great as well!

Mikey answers:

You’re taking the program because you have a job in sight.

So find a company that is going to need your skills when you’re finished. Call and say you’re in school and you’d like to talk to someone for 20 minutes for a real world perspective. (Important: don’t mention jobs.) You might be surprised at how willing they’ll be to share.

This will give you a chance to take a look and learn. It will give them an opportunity to look at you. Maybe you’ll develop a contact you can continue to network with as you wrap up your schooling.

Be careful about “applying to anything”. The modern job hunt is focused. There are 4 people applying for every McDonald’s job so to get anywhere, you have to specialize.
.

James asks…

I’m mad because I can’t find a job this summer? Pissed?

I stopped by and literally applied at every store I am qualified to. I’m 18, and I NEED extra money and experience before I head off to college. Plus I’m sick of riding on my parents bank account. I’ve been applying since early May, but all their lineups are full. I call managers to look up on my application and they’re like ”I’ll do it later” or seem uninterested. What do I have to do to get a job?

Mikey answers:

Try registering with a couple of agencies. You may have started too late to find a job. Most teens have been out since Xmas looking for a job. Jobs are very scarce as you see. Don’t call anyone, just show up and put in an application. You might be lucky enough to get an on the spot interview. Talk to family and friends to let them know you are job hunting. Landscapers are always looking for help at this time of year. Just keep trying…..

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job College

Susan asks…

College student with job seeking woes?

I’m 20 years old and I go to community college. I’ve been looking for a job for the summer and I accidentally passed up some good job opportunities. Don’t blame me, blame my voicemail on my phone. I am still angry about that. Anyway, I have booked some trips during the summer because I gave up a while ago on finding a job during the summer. After my missed job interviews, I got my hope back. The problem is I won’t be getting a job soon. I leave in two weeks to go to Canada to visit my boyfriend. I come back on July 18th and I’m going back to Canada during the first week of August to go to a wedding with my boyfriend. My mom told me that I need to find a job and I agree. I am not independently wealthy or anything. I need to help pay for school, gas, and textbooks. Nobody will hire a girl who is leaving every two weeks and I probably won’t be able to get a job until August. I’m pretty sure nobody will hire someone who says she can’t start until August.

So, that’s probably a big wall of text. If you did read, I really need some advice. I’m kind of stressing over this. My mom just doesn’t understand my predicament. I already bought my plane ticket for Canada. I really want to go to that wedding. Please help.

Mikey answers:

It’s pretty obvious. You should cancel both trips and work if you need the money, but since you already have the tickets, use them, and forget about the wedding and start working as soon as you can. Learn to prioritize. Take vacations when you can afford them, not instead of your bills, textbooks, and tuition.

Robert asks…

Summer job for 15 year old?

I’m leaving school at the end of may and i’d like a job for the summer as i will have nothing to do for about three months ’til i start college in september. I don’t really mind what type of job it is, i just need to know where to look? If you know of any websites or anything that might be helpful? I live in the u.k and i’m not 16 until the end of july which kind of makes it harder for me to find a job because the majority of places are more likely to hire somebody at the age of 16 rather than someone that is 15.. :-)

Mikey answers:

Many 15 year olds work in the UK. There are no websites, you need to walk around the shops and cafes and ask. I employed all my summer youngsters from those who came into my business and asked if there were any vacancies. The Tourist area I worked in relied on you all to keep us going through the summer.
Good Luck.

Donna asks…

Is anyone who is a current college student having good luck finding jobs with limited experience?

Is anyone who is a current college student having good luck finding a job with the economy the way it is?
The reason why I ask is because I am a current college student and I have been looking for jobs since April and so far no luck. I have some past experiences, but not a lot. I have done some acting for the summer and worked in retail for a month before I had to go back to school. I did do work study in a coffee shop for about a year but no calls yet. The calls I did get were from insurance companies that paid based on how much you sell rather than hourly wage and I was not sure about applying there based on my experience. I even looked online for tips on how to edit my resume. What should I do now and what tips could you give? Also, has anyone have luck in finding jobs

Mikey answers:

I was having a hard time, and I have more work experience than you do (though I’m also younger than you, I would guess). The fact is, the economy is pretty sucky right now, and a lot of people older than you with a lot more experience are having a time of it finding jobs. The only reason I got a job is because a good friend was able to vouch for my skills and hard work, and wrote a letter of recommendation for me.

Bottomline? Apply everywhere you can think of, even places in hiring freezes. If they want you badly enough, they’ll hire you (I got hired at a place that is currently in a hiring freeze). Also, make sure you look polished and professional, even if you’re just popping in to get an application. Try to use paper applications whenever possible, because these force you to go in and out of the store, so there’s a chance a manager might see you and think you a good fit–as opposed to you just being a name on an online application. After your application has been turned in, wait about a week and then call to follow-up–they’ll either turn you down or go review your application. It’s a good way to get yours at the top of the pile. In the meantime, seek out volunteer work–it may not be a paying job, but it will boost your experience and your chances. Good luck!

Sandy asks…

Cool summer job ideas?

I am 20 and a college student and I want to find a job that pays reasonably well but is also interesting and exciting. I am willing to go abroad or pretty much anywhere as long as Im not bored. I know that I could get an internship or work at Mickey-D’s so none of that please

Mikey answers:

What about visiting a local employment centre or career centre.. They may have some ideas or have some cool job postings u can look through.

Mandy asks…

Why can’t we (college students) find a job???

I’m a college student back home in Indianapolis for summer vacation and it seems no one is interested in hiring college students. My friends all over the country are bored just like me, and we just want to work!!! I honestly thought it would be easier than this.
I don’t mean even a business, 9-5 job, I mean telemarketing, Bath and Body Works, Blockbuster, like retail!

Mikey answers:

Times have changed quick, now businesses want peole with a masters degree or specialty degrees. A bachelors degree doesnt mean anything any more.

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job College

Donald asks…

Finding a job in Washington, DC?

I am moving to DC for the summer. How hard is it to find a part-time job? I am a college student and not looking for anything too serious. I have restaurant and retail experience. Any tips?

Mikey answers:

There are a lot of different jobs in DC. A lot of jobs are in retail, and it depends on if you want to work inside or outside. You could easily get a job as a vendor, selling snacks, drinks, and souvenirs to tourists. Or there are jobs at places like Pentagon City Mall and Crystal City and Union Station. There are plenty of jobs up there in retail.

Mandy asks…

Summer camp job/volunteer for a 17 year old?

I’ve been look for summer camps that I could volunteer at or get a job for as a 17 year old. Most CIT positions stop after 16 and pick back up to be a counselor at 18 with college experience.

I live in North Georgia and I can’t find a good camp around that has positions available for my age.

Mikey answers:

Call your state Girl Scouts office — there are Girl Scouts day camps going on all over the USA, and they do accept 17 year olds as volunteers.

Helen asks…

Summer Ideas?!? please help?

Hi, I am a recent high school graduate and will be attending Emory University this fall. I know this is really late, but I need some help finding summer jobs/internships/opportunities. I am already volunteering at a hospital but that is only 4 hours a week. Does anyone know of any opportunities in the Atlanta area that are still open? All the stuff i have found so far is aimed towards college graduates…. please help

Mikey answers:

What do you really love to do? Find a way to do that thing. If you’re at a hospital, volunteer at a rehab center or retirement home. Intern at a child care center, read to kids at the library. I don’t know what you’re really into, or I could make more suggestions. Meditate and ask for help with your search. The answer usually will come to you.

Carol asks…

Is it bad to put your information into a job search engine?

I have heard that sometimes if you put your information into a job search engine that it can backfire on you because if your information stays in the system too long, they won’t consider you if you are searching for jobs later on (right now I am in college and am looking for a summer job, but later I might use the same search engine to find a job after college, and my inactive profile could backfire on me)

I have tried applying to many places in the area, and none of them have called back.
but you did not answer the question, BEST ANSWER, 10 POINTS!!

Mikey answers:

It doesn’t matter because the general job search engines are absolutely terrible at finding jobs. Probably less than 10% of successful job searches result from Monster or Careerbuilder.

Much better is to apply directly on the company’s job site. Better still is to be networking on LinkedIn, watching the people in your field and asking questions/learning.

Blanket blasting to “many places in the area” doesn’t work any more, as you discovered. Modern job searching involves targeting your approach–learning about the companies you want to work for and how you can help them. This builds your resume for the serious job after college.
.

Daniel asks…

Where can I find a job?

I am live in Lancaster, Pa and I am 18 years old. I really need a summer job to earn money for college. Where can I find one? PLEASE HELP.

Mikey answers:

Well if you weren’t lazy, then you could find a job anywhere.

Now apply your filters of scrutiny, and you can’t find a job!

You could find a job at a grocery store, pharmacy, retail store, etc.

Being 18, without education, and in PA will not get you a good job that pays well.

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job College

Donald asks…

Summer job in Hawaii Summer ’08?

My sister is getting an internship at the Ala Moana mall in Hawaii this summer. She wants me to come with her and find a job also. I am totally up to do it! But I’m in college and really need to save up some money, I already have a job lined up for the summer… it’s a crappy job working every weekend of the summer in a kitchen paying $8.00. I’d love to go to Hawaii but I would want that reassurance that I WILL find a job and be getting paid more than I would if I didn’t go. Does anyone know of good part time jobs that pay descent in the Aiea, Hawaii or Ala Moana area? …Oh and go ahead and make fun but I was even leaning towards a Hooters Girl. I can admit I have a pretty face, maybe not such a great body, and I have boobs but nothing that would make a guys jaw drop.

Any advice would be great! :)

Mikey answers:

You should be able to find a job, but you may not make more than $8 an hour–salaries are much lower here. The economy is turning downward, so make sure you check out ads on Craigslist, and also make the rounds in Waikiki for waitressing or retail clerking.

David asks…

I live in the US, how can I find a job in Europe for this summer?

I am a college student. My rich friend’s parents have a house in Norway that I could stay at for free. I want to live there this summer and see some of Europe but won’t be able to afford it unless I can find a job there. How do I go about doing that, I can only speak English

Mikey answers:

If you are American then it is going to be tough as there is no recipricol agreement (like e.g. Australians and New Zealanders have) for a “working holiday”. This means that you will have to apply for a standard working visa and this is almost impossible to obtain unless you have some kind of specialist skill/experience that cannot be found in the pool of labour from the EU. Yes I know that Norway is not EU but it is EEA and therefore party to the same policies in this regard

My husband (non-EU) worked in Norway for sometime and even with a specalist skill, it took over 8 months to obtain this visa.

Best thing you can do is to save up by working part time now until the summer (so that you do not have to work)

You can read more on the official immigration site from Norway here http://www.udi.no/defaultRedesign.aspx?id=2112. Compared with many countries it is actually a very good site – clear and concise info. Alternatively you can contact the Norwegian embassy in the US to find out your options. Thomas asks…

Trouble finding a job?

I graduated with a BS in Aerospace Engineering last May and I still haven’t been able to find a job. I’m really starting to get discouraged. My GPA isn’t the greatest, a 2.7, but it was dropped down by several serious events in my college career: the stress of my mother having cancer my freshman year, starting me off with a 2.4 and then I had almost brought it up to a 2.9 my senior year but got hit with a double whammy of breaking my hip and finally developing bipolar disorder (I had been teetering on developing it for about two years and finally did). I also took a very firm stance against cheating while I was in school, so some of my classmates have higher GPAs than I do because they copied solutions manuals and old exams all the way through school. There are clearly some who are well deserving of their grades, but I’m laughing at some who flunked out of grad school when they couldn’t cheat anymore.

I’ve had several interviews, but I’m told that my personality, which is shy and reserved, is severely impacting me there. Lately I can’t even seem to find jobs where I meet the minimum requirements, and the fact that half the “entry level” jobs I do seem to find have a minimum requirement of 1+ years experience really isn’t helping. About another third have minimum GPA requirements that I don’t meet, which I find really frustrating. (They’re starting to seem unrealistic too, I’ve seen several with minimum 4.0 GPA requirements.) I hardly ever hear back from companies I do apply to, even though I seed my resume/cover letter with key words from the job description. I’ve been trying to search up sub-contractors since I seem to have better luck getting interviews with them, but they’re a little more elusive than the big corporations.

I check job boards every day and I’m on the email list of several companies (like Boeing) who send out new jobs every day. I’ve had several professionals tear apart and tweak my resume. I’m thinking of going to the local community college this summer and taking CAD courses so that I can market myself as a design engineer, but will that work? I mainly see job listings for software engineers in my searches, so part of me wonders if I should go back to school and get another degree in software engineering, but I really hate programming (I can do simple programming when necessary) and I don’t want to rack up more student loans.

Is there anything else I can do? Right now I feel like I’ve got no marketable skills and I really figured that in the 134 credits I had to take *something* would be useful. My favorite field is compressible flow, but I’m willing to work in any kind of aerospace/mechanical engineering if it can get me a full time job. I’m working retail to pay my bills and some days I worry that I’ll be stuck there till I’m old and grey. :(
Found this for you in my job search:

Mikey answers:

“and the fact that half the “entry level” jobs I do seem to find have a minimum requirement of 1+ years experience really isn’t helping”

Tell me about it.

I have a degree in computer science (website and smartphone development) but I cant get a job because I dont have any experience. The economy is a bitch at the moment and companys arent willing to risk employing anyone without real experience in the workplace.

The only way to get experience is through self employment (Though I pressume Aerospace Engineering isnt really something you can do by yourself).I’m trying to become self employed but I’m not getting enough work to support myself (luckily I’m living with my parents rent free at the moment).

Honestly its just tough and there is no easy solution. Its very hard to get an entry level job in any area.

I’m doing an online teaching course and have plans to teach english in east Asia. It doesnt pay much but It should be fun for a year or two and the living costs can be very cheap out there.

Steven asks…

Any suggestions for a college student looking for something worthwhile to do over the summer?

I go to a College in Albany, NY but besides taking summer classes or getting an hourly job, I really want to find something interesting that I can do, whether that’s volunteering or traveling somewhere to work, but I’m having a hard time trying to figure out where to look, or what to do besides a few sites I’ve found. My funds are somewhat “limited” but I really what to do something other than the mundane this year.

Mikey answers:

Check out Global Volunteers…….

William asks…

Whats the best way to go about finding the right summer conservation internship for me?

Im 18 and in my first year of college, im no stranger to hardwork and willing to get my hands dirty. I live in Pennsylvania and am looking for somehting that will get me as far away from here for the summer either working for the environment through an internship or maybe a seasonal job that would provide food and housing.
any helpful comments would be thouroughly appreciated!!!!!!!

Mikey answers:

Are you enrolled in a program at the college or university that you are attending that is related to resource conservation, forestry, enviromental science, soil science, and such. Most of these majors are typically connected to an agricultural college within a university, although some are in other college divisions.

Typically the department offices will have listings of internships and federal work study programs. I would visit these offices and seek information through them. To get on the computer and “google” this stuff might be beneficial, but it would be more effective to apply at your college or university because they can give you more detailed information and facilitate the application process better.

Lisa asks…

How can I find the right summer job?

I am a college student, and am in desperate need of a job this summer.
There’s a huge problem that I have run into though. Although I do excellent with math, I do horribly (with math) under any kind of pressure. So cash register: not an option for me. Even if I only have to count simple change, my mind blanks out (even if the numbers are in front of me). I can’t add 2 to 17. I worked with money and simple numbers (concession stand) all last summer (through a temporary work system which has jobs that usually always involve working with money) and it was a disaster. Eventually I came to work exceptionally early so I could get the window that few people came to.
I was going to apply to work at a summer camp, but I’ve been informed that there are already too many female camp counselors.
Am I doomed?

Mikey answers:

Try checking out your local Boys and Girls Club or other venues that have summer programs for kids and need people just like you to work with these kids.

Laura asks…

How can a full-time college student find a part time job?

I’m 19 turning 20 next month. I have virtually no job experience, just a summer job that was under the counter. I’m kind of lazy and never really needed a job until now, I really regret not getting one when I was younger. I don’t have money to pay rent, bills, etc. I am totally f***ed if i can’t find work soon. I live in the Portland metro area where jobs are so scarce. Even the McDonalds nearby isn’t hiring. I keep applying everywhere but nobody will give me a job, not even an interview. I try to call back after applying to show that I’m interested but nobody will give me a chance. I don’t know what to do.

Mikey answers:

Definitely try applying to every single place on campus that you can. Even if they say “must have experience,” it’s worth a try. Those jobs are only open to students, and if you put in on your application (on the short-answer section or wherever it fits) something that shows them you are willing to work hard, they will at least give you a chance.
TIPS:
-Always tell the truth
-Let them know you have good work ethic and will readily commit to all tasks assigned to you, and that you are determined to do a good job (if these things are true about you)
-DEFINITELY research their department or company, business ethics, what they do, etc., so they see how well prepared you are in your application, over the phone, and in the personal interview.
-Tell them why you are so willing and excited to work for them — don’t sound desperate by saying “I need this job for the money” but let them know how hard you have been looking for a job, and how you would work harder at this job because you will be so grateful to have an income.
- SPELL CHECK your application and anything else employers might see of you.
-Wear good interview clothes.
-Delete or untag crazy party pics and statuses on fb that use curse words or talk about getting s***-faced.

-Once you have the job, FOLLOW THROUGH ON YOUR PROMISES. Do not complain about ANY tasks they assign you, not out loud and not on your facebook page as they can look that up if they choose. Seriously. Complainers are sooo annoying, especially in these times when an employer is practically doing you a favor by hiring at all.

John asks…

18 yr old in community college and has no job?

My boyfriend has a 18 yr old daughter, she is currently attending a 2yr community college. She is planning to transfer to a 4 year college later on. Right now she’s undecided about her major, and does not know what she wants to do in the future. No goals planned. She is not a A++ student She is kinda lazy, doesn’t study and do her papers till the last minute. But she will do them on her own, w/out you worrying about it. Most of the time you will see her just sitting on the coach watching tv or on her laptop.

Do you think it’s ok if she doesn’t find a job while she is attending school? What about during her summer and winter breaks? Right now she does not have a high motivation to look for p/t jobs. She did try looking for jobs last summer, but did not get hired. But i know she only applied for American Eagle, Hollister and nothing else. I ask her to apply for jobs in the college, and she did not want to.

Currently her dad is still giving her allowance, paying for her cell phone bills. She is living under her dad’s roof.

So do you think it’s ok that she does not try to look for a p/t job while she attending college? Or should he try cut down on some of her expense that way she will have more motivation to look for a p/t job?

Mikey answers:

If you cut her cash she will be less motivated what if they cut your cash will you be less motivated or more? Why don’t you talk to her ask her or invite her to go to the show with you, see your get board she does to. You find things to do she only has four walls to look at. And work is not easy to come by unless you get a degree in college. Find ways for her to study. You can help her in that way no by cutting her money off or slowing her money down that will only add to her being board. I’m going threw this now.

Jenny asks…

summer jobs hard to find?

My 20 yr old is home from college & having a hard time finding a job. No one wants to hire “just for the summer“. We’re in Lorain County, Ohio- what is your experience?

Mikey answers:

McDonalds, WalMart, Sam’s Club, Barnes and Noble, and Cedar Point are all companies that come to mind that have specific programs in place to hire people for “just the summer.”

You’re not going to find a career position “just for the summer.” It’s probably going to have to be what I call “grunt work.”

I threw bags for United Airlines while I was in school and drove a bus at Disney World.

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job College

Joseph asks…

What job opportunities, if any, can a college undergrad find in a pharmacy?

I’m currently a sophomore and I want to work in a pharmacy over the summer but I’m not exactly sure what positions I could fill, if pharmacies even have jobs for non-professionals.

Mikey answers:

IF you are trying to go into pharmacy as a career that is an excellent idea. Contact the national chains and travel if you have to, should your situation allow it in the summer. Try CVS, Eckerd, Rite-Aid, Walgreens, etc. Also, some areas have independent affiliates with “Sav-On” etc.

Carol asks…

What is a good job in the QC area?

I’m trying to find a job this summer before I go to college. So what jobs out there have somewhat good pay and are seasonal? I am looking for one in the Quad Cities, IA/IL area

Mikey answers:

MAKING FRENCH FRIES – OUI LO

Donald asks…

i need to find a summer job. i am an undergraduate. i need that job for 2 moths as part of my project?

its a part of our college project.

Mikey answers:

Depending in your field. If it is physic my daughter went to the hospital and got a job taking people in for x-ray. In her free time she helped others When she graduated she moved up fast because they knew she was a good worker & didn’t mind starting at the bottom.

Steven asks…

Would you recommend fishing for a summer job?

Im 18, willing to work hard, im strong, and i can pull through long hard hours in the worst conditions. I’ve already been out at sea so I have the general idea of how the process works.

Im just wondering if anybody can give me some advice on how to find a job in commerical fishing for summers in New Bedford massachuates. I live in new jerseyand Im goin up to college in boston so my idea is to rack up some cash in the summer to pay up for tuition.

I did it for a few days in jersey but thats only becasue i knew people that worked there, but how would I get hold of a job in the ports up in mass. And starting out what would I make on avarage. I know with fishing its hit or miss and it depends on the catch, but as a green horn how much would my cut be?

I would greatly appreciate it you could get back to me!!
Thanks a lot!!!

Mikey answers:

I recommend you get a deckhand job on a fishing charter boat, they Always need help, you will get regular pay, and the tips are usually pretty good, they pay so much a day depending on experience !!!

Betty asks…

How bad is it to be in college, but not working?

I’m 19, in college……..but I’ve never actually had a job. How bad is this? I go to school full time (including class in the summer). I have good grades, and I’m transferring to university (from community college) soon. Is this going to make it impossible for me to find a job after college? I’m an only child, and I’ll admit I’m probably spoiled.

Is college worthless? I’m worried about this, but I take a full schedule in the spring/fall and dont want my grades to slip.

Mikey answers:

College is not worthless.

By many calculations, a college education is worth about 1 million dollars in lifetime earnings over a high school education.

Make a list of all of the jobs that you would like to do (be realistic). Highlight the ones that require a college education.

Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job College

Donna asks…

How to get a job on a cruise ship? And how much do they make?

I am a college student who would like to travel but cant afford to, so i thought about trying to get a summer job (may-august) working on a cruise ship. How could i try and find a job on a cruise ship? (im willing to work any job). How much do workers make? (Bus boys/room service/dish washers etc..) Any other help would be greatly apprieciated.

Mikey answers:

Contracts are 6 – 10 month long
For most entry jobs previous work experience is required (on land)
For those jobs where no previous work experience is required, the personnel is hired by agencies from mainly Asia.
250 jobs onboard, 250 different salaries.
To get a job onboard a cruise ship one needs to apply and follow the requirements from the cruise line.

For more info, I recommend the below sites:

Nancy asks…

I need a job for college.?

Right now I’m afraid i wont be able to pay for college unless I get a good job over this summer. I’ve thought of almost everything but the well paying jobs require experience I don’t have. I only have like a years worth of retail experience working a cash register but that’s it. I’m also a eagle scout but I cant think of any skills that I obtained from being an eagle scout that would be useful for a job. if anybody knows where I could find a job that pays around 15 dollars per hour with long hours then please tell me. Any help would be appreciated.

Mikey answers:

In most areas waiting tables will average @ $10 per hour… Even thought he base pay is below minimum wage, tips make up the difference…. You will have some days under $7 per hour & some @ $20 per hour…. Averaging out to @ $10 per hour… That is probably the highest pay you will get

in this economy, even people who already have college degrees are having to accept things like $10 per hour wait staff jobs because $15 an hour jobs just aren’t available

Robert asks…

Would it be easier to take more college classes in the summer and fewer during the regular semesters?

If it were possible to take just summer and spring semester courses and no fall semester courses, wouldn’t that be like getting a 4 month break to get a job or find an internship or do other useful things? Sure, it would be a lot more work and probably result in burning out, but it would free up loads of time.

I’m not actually intent on doing this, but I was just wondering hypothetically.

Mikey answers:

If you’re on financial aid, it might be harder to pay for the summer classes.

Sharon asks…

Anybody know anything about college students living and working in Ireland for a summer?

My and my friends (six in total and all college students) would like to live in Ireland next summer. We would have to get jobs and find a place to live. I dont even know where to begin! If anybody could give me a few suggestions that would be great. Thanks

Mikey answers:

Galway is full of students so you will fit straight in.
Jobs are a bit tight here in Ireland but flexible hours are desired more.
My brother has a part time job and is at Galway University so I suggest you start your search in Galway.
Somewhere near a place called Salthill.

Joseph asks…

I have a big problem with getting a summer job..HELP!?

NEED a job to save up money for college and a car (almost none of the money will be used for anything fun). Unfortunately, there aren’t any local businesses within walking distance and I can’t ride a bike anywhere because the only way to get around my city is by highways (I’m not exaggerating). There is a place about 10-15 miles from home that I’m thinking about finding a job at.

My dad is out of work right now and he can drive me at this point in time. He had an interview and is up for a job at the same place my mom works at..if he gets this job I will probably get to use his car because they will carpool to work. Either situation works.
BUT if my dad gets a job somewhere else…I have no way to get to work.
My mom can’t drop me off in the morning because she goes to work around 7 and the stores there don’t open until 9ish.

WHAT DO I DO?! I reaaaally need a job. Not like most other kids get a job..I actually need it.
There is NO public transportation anywhere close to here. so no, that is not an option.

Mikey answers:

She might have to drop you off at 7 am — yeah, you’ll be early, but you’ll have a job. Bring along a good book or your MP3 player. Ask the boss if there is anything you could be doing early — cleaning up, getting ready for the day, etc. He might like having someone come in earlier.

Once you start working there, there may be someone that works there that lives near you that you can carpool with — offer to help with the gas. Even if it’s just two or three days a week, that would help.

Good luck!
