Mikey answers:
You’re right – it will be difficult. Therefore you have to prove that you have qualities that others do not have. How can you prove you are reliable? Do you interact with others, including people of various ages? Can you take orders and use initiative?
You might already have some of the answers (and not realise it!). What do you do outside school hours? Examine your past lifestyle and see if there is anything that would prove to employers you are the one. Incorporate these facts in a short summary – for a summer job one A4 sheet is enough (since people are too busy to read any more).
Do you know anybody in business? In Ireland the best way of getting a job is by previous contacts. Ask politely if anybody is looking for summer help, and stress that you will do anything reasonable.
You can also copy your summary/CV and leave it with various shops, businesses, etc, but don’t forget to follow it up with a personal visit a week later. Don’t wear jeans, look clean and smile as you had it in (Address it to the “Manager”, and always provide an individual address for each business, rather than handing a generic envelope). If you think they’re interested, do a little research about their business beforehand, so you can anticipate some questions if you receive them.
Above all, keep trying and remember that you have a lot to offer!
Good luck.
