Your Questions About Finding A Summer Job In France

Daniel asks…

How do I get a summer job in France?

I’m an American college student, minoring in French, and I’d like to get a job in France next summer. I’ve considered being an au pair, but I’m not sure what the best way to go about that is. I’ve also been told that English speakers are preferred for many tour guide/hospitality jobs in France. How do I find and apply for these jobs? And what are the French visa requirements?

Mikey answers:

I am afraid that, since you are not a EU citizen, you are not allowed to work in France without a work and residence permit and these are no longer obtained easily. You would not be allowed to take a job as a tour guide or in the hospitality industry but you are allowed to go there as an au pair.
The way to go to be an au pair is via an agency: there are a number on the web. Some charge a registration fee, some don’t. They help you through the visa process etc..
For visa requirements see the official French government website:

16 year old girl wants summer job in france?

I’m 16, and trying to find a summer job in france for over the holidays (about a month). maybe to improve my french but mainly to spend my time useful and fun. I’d love to work behind the bar or as a waitress – at a beach or summin. (well, who doesn’t?) Anyway, the only jobs I can find now is to clean laundry in hotels etc… and I’m not too excited. Is it possible to work in a bar at my age – day or night?? (eventhough I’d rather spend my nights to go out). or could you work at a camp site or something like that? anything! =P

How to get a job as a fruit picker in france during the summer?

I’m looking for a seasonal job in france. Where can I find some job offers? i have just visited so many homepages but have found nothing :/

Mikey answers:

Monika, your question is posted from the USA.
I am sorry to tell you that, if you are an American or a citizen of any nation that does not belong to the European Union, you are not allowed to take on work in any state belonging to the EU, and that includes France, without a work permit.
To work in France for any length of time, even for just a month, non EU citizens require a special visa, and these are only given if they have skills that cannot be offered by citizens of the EU. You also have to be sponsored by a local firm or institution and be able to produce evidence of this before you apply for the visa whilst you still are in the USA. Fruit picking of any kind does not require special skills, so would not qualify.
Any employer that takes on a non EU citizen without a work permit, even for short term renumerated work, is committing an offence and is liable to prosecution and a heavy fine. If you are caught working illegally whilst in the EU on the visa waiver that is given for short stays and tourists, you are extradited, put on a blacklist and forbidden from re-entering the EU.

Summer Jobs in France?

Hello! I’m 18 soon to be 19 and was considering trying to find a job in France for this summer. How could I go about doing this? My friend told me of a program for people in Québec called Québec-France that finds them a job and place to live in France. Is there something like this for Americans? I speak french well but i’m not perfect, would this be a problem? I studied french in Québec last summer and have 5 years of french class. So I can speak it well enough to communicate with people. Has anyone done this? How did you find the job? would you suggest it?

Thanks!

Hi!
If you want to get the best out of a summer job in France : Fun job, Free sight seeing and GREAT money you should look into the yachting industry.
I am French and didn’t need to speak French at all for 2 of the 3 jobs I got working as a stewardess.
You are part of a crew, which means lots of new friends. You earn between 2000/3000€ / month and when the boat goes on charter you get to cruise along the Mediterranean and see some of the most beautiful places on earth. You are accommodated for free, eat for free and at the end of each charter you get huge tips from the client.
Most of the workers are either Australians, kiwis or South Africans. Those people are so laid back and fun to hang out. Since your accommodation and food are paid for we usually save the money all season (April to October) and go on a huge back packing trip together at in the winter (we went 3 months in Asia 2 years ago)
You need to get your resume ready, even if you don’t have much experience they’ll teach you on the spot. And they are many crew website looking for staff all year long : www.crewnetwork.com

Or you could just choose a waiter job in Paris, work miserable hours, pay crazy rent and earn very little money..

Bonne chance!!
